Anyone have a game or games in their collection that they'd never part with under any circumstances whether it is due to value or sentimental reasons? As in, the crown jewel of your PS2 collection?

I'd say mine is REZ. I know it isn't rare and I think that the dreamcast version is the best version, but I just love popping in the disc and shooting around for an hour or so. Feeling the trance through my hands and zoning out!

Strictly PS2...well, damn even that is hard.

Kingdom Hearts was a special game to me and the packaging was beautiful, but then there's my MGS3 which is signed (and it was a damn fine game anyway). Or my sealed SotC first print. Or The Rumble Fish just because... this is tough *sigh*

I wish Rumblefish 2 came out on console as well :(

I just beat King's Field IV: Ancient City last week and was absolutely blown away. I'm a huge fan of all three Souls games but otherwise hadn't played any FromSoft titles. I was initially only interested in KF from the historical perspective but it ended up far exceeding my expectations.

The control, especially turning speed is extremely slow. The running speed is still slow but not too bad and was necessary to allow for in-game loading and no loading screens (like Dark Souls). I would recommend remapping the movement buttons to the D-pad (forward, backward and strafe) and face buttons (look/camera movement) to mimic dual analog sticks, with magic on L1, attack R1, and run/interact as R2. It's surprisingly palatable once you get a feel for it.

I absolutely fell in love with the atmosphere and tone of the world they created. The music fits perfectly, the 1st person perspective really sucks you in, and the world and level design were first rate. The world design is a brilliant combination of Dark Soul 1's verticality and DS2's hub and spokes. You can go off exploring for hours through multiple new areas and then suddenly open a shortcut back to an earlier area, that same WOW moment from Dark Souls. It's also remarkable how well the feeling of Souls combat is already expressed here, the rhythm of stamina management and spacing yourself relative to the enemy. It's also crazy how many specific characters and areas were essentially reused in the Souls games.

I didn't find it very challenging and finished a totally blind playthrough in 25 hours but was absolutely engrossed the entire time. It revived that sense of mystery and exploration that was lost in the simpler level designs of Dark Souls 2. I would give it the strongest possible recommendation for any big Souls fan who doesn't get hung up on graphics and can adjust to the slow character speed. You might just fall in love like I did...

Sounds fantastic !

Thanks for the impressions !

Is Cold Winter worth a play? I remember previews talking about GoldenEye a fair bit, but the game seemed to come and go without much fanfare.

Yeah if you can pick it up cheap it's not bad. It's got the same mission/level design of the rest of the PS2's FPS games so you should have a good idea what you're in for already.

Cold Winter is alright.

Valkyrie Profile 2 Silmeria looks great(just got it today):

I still have this game sealed, lol. I ALWAYS unwrap my games as soon as I get them, and try them out. This one however, I never did that.

^If it supports 1080i, that would be insane.

Btw, VP2 works decently and looks pretty good in 1080p through PCSX2:

Turns out I have 442.
(list of tons of games)

Did a bit of a double take there since I have almost the same number as you do (439) and share a great deal of the same titles you have in your list. While I don't have many of any sports or racing games that you have, I notice you don't have music games like Gitaroo Man, Parappa 2, Frequency, or Amplitude. Not a fan of the genre?

Hmm, I'll have to check out that store in Canton next time I'm in the area. Too bad I didn't know about it when I was there a couple weeks ago.

I'm actually trying really hard to parse through what this means. If there's no upscalling at all, how does GSM get to 720p and 1080i or 480p for starters
PS2 video output is analog - so changing resolution works by "stretching" the signal.
The end result is analog-"equivalent" of what upscaling does with digital(eg. pixels will appear stretched if you are feeding 640x480P source into 1280x960P output), but one that doesn't involve any filtering or math processing of the framebuffer contents.
There's no deinterlacing either(GSM is changing the output mode on source) - when you force the scan to go from 240->480(for games using field-rendering) it'll just stretch and result in game looking worse than it does on interlaced-displays.

Wow, I had no idea that sort of method existed. So in a 480i game its just stretching the 240 odd and even fields? That sounds nasty.

Thank you, looks to be an hour away from me, would you say its worthwhile to make a trip down there?

I know of a few others in the area, such as:
http://www.mindgamesetc.com/ (23 and Schoenherr)
http://www.gamequestdirect.com/ (Located on 21 and Gratiot)

Does Game Quest Direct have any copies of Ninja Five-O for the GBA? Supposedly there was an official reprint by GQD. I never knew it was a retail store too. I hope they're not hoarding them.

I guess it depends.... they had a lot of games but were missing more obscure games. I can only speak for their PS2/PS1 sections though. They had tons of Atari/Colecovision, 90s PC games, and some cool rare games way outside my budet

They also had around 50 ish Japanese games....really interesting store. I would call ahead though if you are looking for something in particular.

I see, I'll have to check it out possibly one day.

I hope I'm not getting too off-topic but I also found this store, which I hope has some good stuff. http://www.yelp.com/biz/retro-taku-videogames-madison-heights-2

Is the PS2 region free?

I don't mind those games but they're usually a little more expensive so I haven't bothered with them. Plus I have more recent things like Rockband, Rez HD etc to play in that area. I've hunted out RPGs and paid $$$ for them, but most other genres have been opportunistic where I've waited to grab things at $5-$10 (which is about as good as it gets here in Oz).

What's the best way to get the best looking picture on an HDTV? I'm using the cables that come with the PS2. I've always just kinda plugged in and played. Anything I could tweak or other cables to try?

Component cables improve the picture quite a lot, not perfect, but a lot better than composite.

I've seen Ace Combat in a couple of these lists. Is this a series I should check out? Which ones should I look into first? Is there a must have? One that stands out above the rest?

Edit: clarity

SO the nice fellow I bought Baldur's Gate and various PS2 games/Xbox games via Criagslist contacted me over psn after realizing he was a pretty passionate gamer and let me know he found this and wanted to give it to me after buying Shadow Hearts Covenant.

download_zpsfe2deea9.jpeg

Gave it to me for free, really cool guy, you don't meet many people who are still this passionate about games, Craigslist for all it's rare negative sometimes allows you to meet likeminded people and I love the human element of it :) Played only the first few minutes but the presentation of victorian alternate 1900s is really intriguing, the main character is already pretty unique too.

Also as I've started to fully indulge in fighting games I was lucky enough to buy this for pretty cheap via Ebay, been looking for it for awhile and those prices were ridiculous before I was lucky enough to find this.

After falling in love with the og Neo Geo CD, amazing controller imo allows me to shoryuken/power dunk flawlessly. Perfect for any arcade game especially the Metal Slug anthology.
