Pachter Predicts: Xbox One outsold PS4 in September (dance, you puppets)

MKV DLNA playback?

It continues to baffle me how MS can keep having the best games and the best vision for gaming's future and their box, yet still manage to sabotage their own success by terrible communication and marketing. They totally flubbed the messaging of their Steam killer system last year and they are continuing to screw it up now. One would have thought that, with Mattrick gone and Phil "The Stud" Spencer in charge, that they would have sorted out their messaging, but nope.

Take the feature I quoted as an example. It's such an obvious advantage that it baffles me that they haven’t taken advantage of it. They should print it in huge ass letters on the console packaging and raise awareness about it with TV marketing and watch how their sales at least double. Such a wasted opportunity. They should hire me to do their marketing for them.

Let me just add a little retail flavor to this sauce. Out of all of those games at my store, MCC is the only one that you could look at pre-orders and say, 'Well that is going to do fairly well this fall.' Well of course it is. It's all 4 Halos remade. FH2 has sold averagely, while the pre-orders for SO are...well I'm not going to say bad, but they aren't exactly blowing up the charts either. We actually have more pre-orders for the CoD Xbone bundle than the SO one (even though that white Xbone looks pretty sweet). Project Spark? We haven't sold a copy all week. Whether or not you feel the Xbone has a better lineup than Sony is irrelevent when in the grand scheme, MS is banking heavily on MCC to pull the through this fall with CoD and SO pulling in decent sales as well.

As for Sony? Destiny, Driveclub, LBP3, and all the marketing deals they have for other multiplat games is how they are positioning themselves this holiday season. So yes, exclusive wise Sony is lacking compared to MS, however strong word of mouth and a few decent bundles will keep Sony ahead.

Yea, but I think the comments were made in regards to just overall quality, not so much "which lineup is going to push either console more?"

I agree the XB1 isn't going to magically jump over the PS4 in sales because of the lineup, but it's hard to ignore the quality of the XB1 lineup vs. the PS4 lineup for this fall.

Because it's a notorious gray area with content producers, especially the movie studios. In the past studios have refused to provide content to partners who have openly supported it so most of these companies keep it as a footnote in their tech specs and hope word of mouth gets around. Don't forget MS runs their own movie and TV store and they need to keep those partners happy.

Dragonborn, are you ever going to stop?

You can't just disregard Halo MCC because it's a 'remake'. That is just silly, it's going to be extremely popular.
You're completely ignoring Forza Horizon 2, probably because there's nothing bad to say about it.
Sunset Overdrive looks amazing, regardless of the studio's recent history. If it doesn't turn out so well then, sure, you can remove it from your console wars list.
You don't mention Project Spark, even though if you were to talk about the PS4 lineup, you'd undoubtedly list LBP3.

And of course, there are other games like Dance Central, Ori, and D4.

But hell, you're right. Weak lineup.

To be fair, that's a pretty weak lineup from a sales perspective, with the exception of Halo MCC. Don't get me wrong, they look like good/great games. In fact, I'm resisting dropping $450 for Halo MCC alone so hard right now.

But PS4 has the best versions of all the big third party games (besides Ass Creed Unity lolololololol). The strength of those titles alone will thrust it ahead of Xbone this holiday.

If we lived in a world where the most/best exclusives were what sold consoles... the hardware sales rankings for the big three would probably be reversed right about now. Instead, PS4 is selling off the power of having the best console version of COD, FIFA, Madden, Watch Dogs, Diablo, Battlefield... etc.

All this misinformation in my GAF. I can't let it stand.

And sony will have released more exclusive titles this year than MS, who seems to have forgotten that there are 2 months in the year, not just 3-4.
There are 12 months in the year. Tsh tsh.

Here is the ultimate listwar list. It lists everything and does not leave games out because of stupid reasons.
Listwar.com doesn't list games only released in glorious Japan like the Nipponphobes they are.

IMHO MKV DLNA is very.. very overrated. There is like 5 other devices than can play music in less than a meter of my PS4. Is not such a big deal. Again, IMHO

No it isn't, it's selling based on the shit storm and bad PR Xbox One will never shake off.

You honestly think your average consumer cares about where multiplats look better? They didn't care on Xbox/PS2 and they didn't care last gen either, PS3 was toe to toe with 360 in software sales.

Graphics may have become the be all and end all here for some, but in the general population it is still at the bottom for purchase intent, well below price, friends, exclusives, system software, online ect. All far more important.

You should check out the Sony (and Microsoft) support threads and see how many of them are (were) dedicated to DLNA playback. It's a heavily sought-after feature that people do miss from the PS3 (and Xbox 360) days.

For the same price, why would you buy the system that has the worse version of COD? FIFA? Madden? These are the most popular games on the planet. The system with the best version of them is going to sell the best.

PS2/Xbox isn't applicable because that was an era of the third party exclusivety where PS2 fucking dominated. PS2 had a shit load of games that Xbox or Gamecube did not, or that Xbox didn't get til waaaaaaaaaaaaay later (the biggest being MGS and GTA). It's not really the case here with Xbone and PS4. They have the same third party output, just one is more powerful than the other.

If anything, your average consumer is more unaware of the PR shitstorm/180 that Microsoft did pre launch. "PS4 is more powerful, and costs the same!" isn't exactly a hard line to get out there.

It's not all about multiplatforms though. Yeah, multiplats look better on PS4, but the real differentiators are going to be first-party games that you can only get for one console or the other.

I have both consoles and don't even know what he is talking about? What is it?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Living_Network_Alliance

The Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) is a nonprofit collaborative trade organization established by Sony in June 2003, that is responsible for defining interoperability guidelines to enable sharing of digital media between multimedia devices.

Basically, it allows your console to interface with a DLNA server that you can run off of a home computer or server so you can stream music and movies you have on file. Plex just started supporting Xbox One as well.

Most smart TVs do it as standard too, and media boxes like X3D do a better job including native 24p playback.

Still handy to have it built in, but like any media playback on console, its execution is usually the letdown.

What % of 360 and PS3 console sales are from the US? Europe? Japan? All Other? Does anyone have a slick pie chart they can pass along perhaps?

Ahhh. Thank you that explains it. I'm old school I guess, I use a stereo or Blu-Rayz. Thats why I didn't know probably. Do most people do this? I feel old now. Lol.

ioi was the username of a GAF member from years ago. He stunk up the sales threads with made up numbers, and eventually got permabanned. Then he started his site, vg chartz .com, and seems to do very well selling BS to unsuspecting clients. That site is also banned on GAF (hence the chopped up site name above), because its figures are partly compiled from awful methodology, partly completely made up, and all terrible.
whoa...still quite an accomplishment for someone black-listed from a big gaming forum.

I'm sure he's pretty smug right now, cool story though...

List wars.....hmmm I have nothing to add, these lists are absolutely terrible on both sides compared to good years of PS2 or X360/PS3 gens. For me, 2015 is the real start of this generation, FF, MGS, etc...nothing really has even come out on these systems yet besides short games and remakes. Really don't get the exclusive list war, they are both inherently weak, and for some reason Sony's exclusives in the beginning of the year keep getting ignored, hmm..very silly stuff IMO.

I'm wondering if Patcher is right though, I'll be kinda surprised if X1 beat PS4 in September, I would think the Halo release would do it, then again, I saw some pretty nice deals for X1 so it's possible.

I wouldn't say most, but lots rip their movies from Blu-Ray into MKV files, stripping out all the protection and annoying previews for instant watching. It's a speed and convenience thing.

Yeah this no games thing is either sarcasm or genuine ignorance. PS4 is also most likely have the largest library of any next gen console due to it getting the Japanese third party games as well as the Western third party games. SCE have potential for a larger output.

Not to buy into the list wars thing too much, but that last hasn't been updated since April and seems to be conveniently leaving out minor Xbox One titles while it includes all minor PS4 titles. I'm not sure if that's been pointed out already or not.

EDIT: My bad. I have been shown the error of my ways.

It didn't work for Sony last gen. I loved Sony's output and have faith they will produce a ton of exclusive content this gen too. But PS3 had way more exclusives and in way more genres last gen and only tied Microsoft. Granted they probably allowed Sony to do that comeback from a distant third to tied for second, but that's besides the point. A console ideally should be the best place to play anything and if it catches on with the mass market that's how it goes.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

I don't really care about the list, but I am wondering what minor XBO titles are you talking about?

I'm looking at April specifically. Lots of PS4 titles in italics are PSN games and the only title in italics for XO is Kinect Sports Rivals. Was that really all XO had going for it in April?

Oh, so you don't even know if that list is missing anything, just speculating. Not sure why you chose the term "conveniently" then.

And yes, that was the only thing exclusive launched on the XBO that month according to wikipedia.

It is a convenient graphic by ending at may, when games with gold debuted for X1 in June and i believe Strike Suit Zero was the first indie title to be released also in June.

The difference between Advanced Warfare on the XO and PS4 isn't that much, and Xbox Live members get DLC a month before PSN and PC users. That is more than enough to get people to buy the Xbox version. A 30 day head start on DLC matters because by the time DLC hits PSN, something else is out to play. The last DLC for BO2 came out around September(?) on XBL, and by the time it launched on PSN, although people bought it, the hype died down a ton. Same goes for Ghosts' DLC.

It ended in May because that is when the person who created it, made it (see the date at the bottom). It hasn't been updated because I don't think he is interested in doing so.

Also Strike Suit Zero came out in April.

What annoys me the most...Pachter makes completely false claims --> he gets proven wrong -> Still continues to make false claims

Why is nobody (journalists) confronting him about those wrong statements? Does that Guy even know about his reputation on the Internet?

also people on x1 get the digital version for cheap with that thing they do buying games on indian or hong kong store. if i got an x1 i would consider getting the game on that platform for 40-45 usd versus the better resolution ps4 version, but 60 usd.

As stated in this thread multiple times, his predictions on NPD have no bearing on his credibility for his actual job.

We just gotta ignore him and let him be, like not making this thread would have been a start.

If he says something, just nod and move along.

It's been pointed out that Pachter is an analyst for more than just video games.

And also, meteorologists aren't right all the time either.

If I made a prediction, and NeoGAF put my name in the topic title and made a 55-page thread about it, I would be pretty amused.

...

Technically, this response is a prediction. Just sayin'.

Why? It's all in good fun. He's an industry personality, he says something crazy, it's worth discussion. He's a lightweight when it comes to saying controversial stuff, and very few of the real nutcases are shunned or banned from discussion.

People are free to avoid threads about Pachter. They usually have his name in the title.

This is quite possibly the most useful post in all of GAF 'sidebar knowledge' history.

Thank you!
