This is the reason I hate where they took the Fitzsimmons story. In fact where they took all the pairings. It's like romantic subplots are the only thing they can think of doing with the characters. I wish they would do a something a little less obvious.

Fitz pining for Simmons makes sense. He's had limited female contact; he had a crush on Skye but she was into Ward, so he started developing feelings for Simmons.

Skye liking Ward also made sense. I hope she doesn't have any lingering feelings for him and really does hate his big fat Nazi guts. A Ward redemption arc plus Skye forgiving him would probably make me stop watching.

May and Coulson... I don't see it. They get along really well but they seem more platonic than anything. Plus Coulson has/had cello lady. It was fake May's touchy-feely personality that clued Coulson into the fact that something was wrong.

I kind of hope nothing happens between Trainspotting and Skye, but honestly they are young, attractive people in a confined space fighting for their lives. A little romance isn't implausible.
 
May/Coulson definitely seems like a "had a fling as kids, good friends now" thing. You can love someone without being in love with them.

That's the vibe I get as well. There was something there when they were fresh young agents but now time and duty have changed things. There's still an undercurrent there but both are way too devoted to their cause to ever entertain the idea.
 
And lets not forget that May had some traumatic event some time in the past. Iirc they said she was quite cheerful before earning her nickname of "the cavalry". Event that made her stop field operations and avoid social contacts.
 
Last episode was not as good as the first two, but I'm still in here. Just wasn't that exciting besides a lot of footage of May hnngghghhhhh

Exactly. There was meaningful character interaction and progression for Fitz and the newcomers, Phil and May, plus further alien writing weirdness.
 
Filler = fine
Useless filler = not fine

I'd call this episode filler compared to the others, but in a good way. A filler episode in season 1 would have pissed me the fuck off.

That's quite untrue. A filler episode is one that does not advance or only minimally advances the overall narrative. Season 2 Episode 4 was filler, but it was still a fun episode.

It suggests that "overall narrative" is the only goal of a series of episodes, though, by implying you are "filling space" with anything else. To the contrary, this episode featured some significant character growth for Fitz, and his integration into the new team. It also planted seeds for an eventual May-gotta-take-down Coulson possibility, and showed how afraid of his condition he is. Hydra is also now aware of who is running SHIELD, and Raina has been positioned into a much more aggressive/desperate position. You need to move a lot of pieces in an ongoing story, and sometimes all you're moving are motivations and attitudes. But they still need moving.

A true "filler" episode ends exactly as it began. This episode certainly wasn't one of those.

Yeah, I wouldn't say this week's episode was filler. It just didn't drop any megatons. I think a filler episode is one in which we're at the same place at the end of the episode that we were at the beginning. I don't think you can say that about this one.

Not if you consider a stinger sequence involving Raina to be integral to the episode, but it was really a stinger and not part of an A or B thread for the episode. There was also the May + Coulson (A) and Fitz + dudes stuff (B), true. It'd be nice to hear someone who writes about stories feels about the lines for filler episodes (I'm more of a games guy).

Honestly the concept of "filler" as it's used seems to stem from Anime, where there are often episodes created to fill space to give the Manga time to advance again.

In standard live TV, there's really only Serial and Procedural. By the Anime standards, nearly every episode of a Procedural would be considered "filler" and unless the Serial show moves at a break neck pace, a good deal of those episodes would be "filler" as well. TV shows, especially those with 22 episode seasons like is common in American TV, use a lot of episodes to dangle plot threads. They're not really filler as those setups are integral to the events that take place later.

but I would like to add, that a true filler episode also isn't an inherently bad thing.

I think many people use the term "filler" to say that something is bad.

It's not a hard black and white, if that's what you mean but most shows are typically regarded as one or the other depending on which format is the most dominant. Fringe, for example, started out very procedural while it layed it's plot threads and then went heavily serial so it's regarded as a serial show. From S2 on, if you missed an episode, you missed something that mattered to the main plot. NCIS on the other hand is almost entirely procedural and with a few serial mini-arcs here and there. Viewers can miss an episode and it won't affect the next one. But you can't really say S1 of Fringe is full of filler or that NCIS is mostly filler. It doesn't really work for American TV formats.
 
To give a small point of reference to the 'filler' conversation:

The single best example of a filler episode in AoS has been S01E09, "Repairs".

For those that are fortunate enough not to remember, it's the one about a fucking ghost on the plane. The subplot of the episode involves Fitz and Simmons pranking Skye. There is not a single bit of plot development, no relationships are developed or changed, and the one tiny character trait we are supposed to take away from the episode is that May used to be lighter, but now she's a hardass. However, the end stinger negates that by showing she's still not a total hardass...so...yeah.

This is the single 100% skippable episode in the series.

lol I was just thinking about which episodes are skippable the other day and I forgot this one, because it was so incredibly forgetful. We never got any resolution on what he was doing with his powers, I just assumed he was kinda like Magik in that he was manipulating another dimension like Limbo in order to teleport.
 
Such a great episode, they have been on roll this season. May was awesome and the table slam was amazing, she was always quite the versatile fighter (remember her fight with Ward, which I also really liked).

Also, the episode was not filler, at all.

I actually wish they would drop the mystery elements of the show. Because they aren't very interesting. The show would be so much better as a straight up action show.

Season 2: episode 5 "A Hen in the Wolf House"

Coulson's team is up against the beautiful and deadly Bobbi Morse--Security Chief for Hydra. Meanwhile, Skye's father forces Raina to reunite him with his daughter at any cost.
