Valkyria Chronicles for PC [Nov 11, £14/20/$20, has all DLC, 60fps/1080p+, $14 GMG]

Speaking of JA, I can't be the only one who couldn't get into the remake. Spent so many hours in JA2, too. D:

I'm in the same boat. JA2 is one of my favourite games of all time, and while it's nice to see developers try to do something with it, it's really disappointing to see them fail this much. JA: Back in Action was super disappointing. JA: Flashback is promising, but I get the impression they stopped development way too early.

I wonder if they'll do the steam thing and add TF2 characters to the game like so many games do these days.

Scout as a Scout
Soldier as a Lancer
Sniper as a Sniper
Engineer as an Engineer
Ms. Pauling as a Shocktrooper

Here's the thing though when you compare VC to titles it more closely resembles from Japan, like FF Tactics, like Disgaea, like Tactics Ogre, like Fire Emblem it's a little different. Sure it is more like a story and party focused RPG in terms of your army but it has 50+ recruits that each have a name, voice, predefined abilities (with a bit of customisation) and favourite recruits they like to be on the field with. All the other examples I listed, while they do have their named characters the majority of your army is class based and user defined which I find lacking in the personality each recruit from VC had from the offset. Not to say I don't build up a relationship with 'generic squad member number 5' after their actions in game but it felt a bit different in VC.

That's basically Fire Emblem's model too though. Your party is composed by unique characters obtained in specific story chapters, no generic hired soldiers.

Awakening has reclassing but it's a limited set per character, aside from the player avatar and bonus/dlc characters. The previous titles (well, aside from the Shadow Dragon and Mystery of the Emblem remakes) didn't even have reclassing at all.

Any guesses as to when that "More Info" is going to come around?

The suspense is killing me >.<

I mean, it's not like I'm expecting some sort of "Expanded Edition" or this to turn out to secretly be that Trilogy Pack that we all knew to be a hoax, but it's kind of a weird feeling seeing this be just a single Twitter post and a handful of posts on Sega's forums of their PR manager spreading the link to the tweet around without going into much more detail. That said on the first point way back there, it'd be nice if this comes with all the DLCs.
Yeah, I'm feeling a touch nervous to, but at least the Pegi rating that sparked the announcement is concrete.

Would it be crass on Sega's behalf if they released VC around about the time of Armistice day? Because I could see that happening depending on how far along they are.

I think the leak caught them off guard so it might be a little while before we get more info. In this case they refreshingly decided to just confirm the rumour instead of the standard PR response of "We have nothing to say at this time".

Yeah, I agree with this fully.

In VC I never just took "a shocktrooper" or "a sniper" into a battle, I'd take Edy and Marina.

It kind of helps that there was a 'core clique' as far as the story went, along with (almost trope-ish) a core story that couldn't be told with faceless generics (won't elaborate because spoilers). And then you had cliques outside that core clique. This is something that VC2/3 failed to properly recapture, as it threw like 200 characters at you out of the gate.

I only played a little of VC2, and that wasn't even my problem with it. 6 Characters max in the field, 5 if you have a tank? No thanks. Give me my huge VC1 battles.

Well, it's actually 5 characters to a single field, and 6 characters total throughout all of the maps, tank or not.

No, but it did have an ingame achievement system if I remember correctly. So they'd have an easy time implementing steamworks achievements if they wanted to.
Yeah, and there were some really neat achievements in there. They could just port it 1 to 1 to Steam achievements and I'd be more than content on that front.

All things considered, this port can't be that far from release, right? Even with it being obvious that Sega's hand got forced to reveal this a bit early, these things usually don't get submitted for ratings until a short while before release IIRC.

VC2 did kind of have these things--clearly Avan, Zeri and Cosette were the A-team, and there were a couple of cliques as well. It's just the execution was worse, mostly due to the characters being more outlandish/caricaturish. VC3 only sort of solves the latter problem, but it does benefit from a better story and a more serious tone. Don't remember if it had fewer characters than VC2 but you do get a more distinct sense of the individual characters so it feels like they're better served for the most part.

Please no. I need my fabulous BITE MY SHINY Lancer. I don't need HOOVY.

I remember evenly levelling all my troops. I was on chapter 8 when I started to wonder why the game was so freaking hard. Went to the GAF OT and welp, wasnt supposed to do that.

The irony is that I had no idea engineers could heal your tank until chapter 8. No idea why I evenly leveled them too.

Game was freaking rewarding like that although difficult. Vyse was my main bro.I could live without Aika.. eh.

I don't think I used orders until pretty late in the game and used balanced squads to methodically clear out the enemy. It may of not of been the most efficient way to get high ranks but there's a certain satisfaction of one of my snipers lining up a headshot from half a mile away and dropping the guy before he knew what hit him.

Talking about games to fill in lore, we could use something for Radi Jaeger and his homeland. Maybe a game where he returns from the defeat in Gallia to try and win independence for his people the hard way. End Of A Battle, Beginning Of A Journey from VC3 already hints at this by showing Jaeger's escape from Gallia, so the germ's planted for a game about rebellion in Fhirald. Maybe they could mix the new plot with flashback missions/DLC illustrating Radi's involvement in the war between Fhirald and the Empire.

Would be nice If my Windows tablet could play this but then I would have to plug in a controller. I would really like to see another Valkyria Chronicles on any platform.

IIRC for ports without significant content changes you don't need to submit a playable copy on the new platform to get a rating, so it could be further off still. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong)

I bet we'll see it by the Winter Sale, at least for preorder. Capcom and Konami seemed to have seen good returns for DR3 and MGR when they "debuted" them in a sale, and Sega itself did with Typing of the Dead.

What are the chances that VC 3 might come to PC if this does well?

It'll obviously be dependent on how well VC1 does, but there isn't much of a precedent as far as I'm aware. Final Fantasy Type-0 is an obvious analogy, in that Square Enix and Sega both decided against bringing the PSP games to the West in light of the PSP's declining fortunes. But there are a few differences. Square Enix reportedly already had an English script for Type-0, whereas no such thing has ever been said about VC3. Also, VC2 DID come out in North America, so by that point Sega had two full games' worth of sales figures to go on, and neither lit up the charts--the first game did okay, but only after substantial MSRP discounts. Clearly VC2's sales told Sega there wasn't a future for the franchise in North America, at least not while it was still on PSP.

Something else worth noting: Type-0 is getting a fairly comprehensive overhaul from the original PSP version, including both gameplay changes and graphics upgrades. Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3 would definitely benefit from gameplay changes and new unified maps now that they don't have to worry about the PSP's memory constraints. So if you happen to hear that a Valkyria Chronicles trilogy remaster is coming to Japan any time soon, that would strike me as our best hope for seeing VC3 in the West. Obviously Sega could do a barebones re-release of VC2 and VC3, PSP restrictions and all; Steam has seen plenty of up-rezzed mobile and PSP ports. But considering the cost of localization, I'm far less inclined to believe Sega will bother unless a) they're already planning to do so because of an HD re-release, b) VC1 on PC does surprisingly well, or c) it turns out they've already got an English script lying around and so don't have to spend the money. Or d), Atlus does the localization.

tl;dr: I don't think it's likely at this point, but it does look slightly better now than it did a year or two ago. As always, my fingers are crossed.

What are the chances that VC 3 might come to PC if this does well?

Again, SEGA (NA) has had a recent history of working with fans with what were originally fan projects and making them official*. And there is an existing fan-translated VC3 English script which is half decent. What remains to be seen is if the effort to port a PSP game (VC2) over to PC and adequately pretty it up will be made. I'd say if VC2 comes over, VC3 is more likely than you think.

* (Although the franchise I'm talking about hit some snags with its 3rd installment. Heh heh heh heh heh)

Kinda wish that Sega would try and Multi-OS some of their console ports.

But I'll take Windows only if absolutely necessary.

Are they including the DLCs as well?

No known info other than that it's coming to PC. Just to keep expectations low, let's assume for now that it's not coming to Steam even though we all know damn well that it is. Maybe assume it's 1080i and 24fps locked just to be sure that we don't get disappointed if worst comes to worst.

the part about assuming its not coming to steam is silly. Im all for expecting the worst (I just said that some pages ago) but Steam is 100% guaranteed. its not a EA game afterall

I'm ready for this game in 4K/60fps, who's with me? I SAID WHO THE FUCK IS WITH ME?!?!?

Twas just a healthy dose of cynicism after all the optimism we had for FF13 PC (Alright, it was no SR2 or DP in terms of how poorly it was ported, but...)

Besides, everyone was thinking the FF7 PC re-re-release would be on Steam day 1 since Squeenix had already established a presence on Steam. Took a whole of two years before it came to Steam.

That has no relevance to Sega who has put all of their western PC game releases on Steam since forever.

I wouldn't recommend using Square Japan's nonsensical behavior to form your argument.
