Alien.
Aliens.
The Terminator.
Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

Four undeniable classics.

Alien 3.
Alien: Resurrection
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
Terminator Salvation.

Four undeniable turds.

Those recent Terminator: GEINEIZIS pictures made me think about these two franchises. They've had similar trajectories, and recently there have been efforts to revive them, with Prometheus and now with another Terminator movie, some sort of weirdo reboot/sequel/alternate timeline clusterfuck.

There is also ancillary stuff like the Terminator TV show (yuck) and the AVP movies (double yuck), which you may or may not consider part of the discussion.

Personally, without considering the AVP trash, it's a hard question. I really can't say.

P.S. Some people will insist Alien 3 is a good movie, but they're fucking lying!

Alien 3 is a goo.....decent movie. The latter alien films might have sucked (for many) but they don't hold a candle to the fucked-uppery that is the Terminator franchise.

Futurama handled time travel better, and Fry is his own grandfather!

Alien 3 doesn't belong in the bottom list, it doesn't exactly belong in the top list but somewhere in the middle.

Funny, I just realized I only like the first two movies of each series. Anyway, I'm going to go with Terminator. I can tolerate the third Alien as well as Resurrection but it's hard to watch the third Terminator and Salvation.

heh. youre right though. no version of that movie is good.

i think Aliens got shat on the worst.
the things that happened to the Ripley character really suck. i cant think of any things the subsequent Terminator entries did to ruin either Connor (mother and son) or the Terminator himself.

they just fucked with the timeline, mostly.

Alien 3's assembly cut is not a turd.

I guess I'd go with Terminator, if only because of the spelling of the new one's title.

The Assembly Cut does nothing to elevate Alien 3 from being a boring-ass slog to get through.

This is true. Compared to Alien the post T2 movies are positively reverent in their treatment of Cameron's characters.

Alien.

Fox's overall incompetence broke the back of the Alien franchise.

Because the Terminator IP has always been 'independently' owned it's films has almost always been produced and financed outside of the studio system.

Owing to this it has a history of directly or indirectly 'killing' the productions companies that made the sequels

This happened with the Terminator Salvation producer Halycon which went under owing many associated with the film money. If anything Terminator has done the best it could moving from 'house to house' looking for a spare bed and a hot meal.

I'm going to make a loooooot of enemies with this post, but fuck it.

Since I actually enjoyed Terminator 3 and Salvation, I'm gonna vote for the Alien franchise.

But now that I think of it, the plot of Terminator Genisys actually seems to retcon T1 and T2 out of existence, and that's just plain unacceptable...

If you add the sum total of movies involving each franchise, Aliens because the AVP movies are in my opinion, pretty god damned terrible. Terminator 3, while not being nearly as good as the first or second ones is still a movie I do like and enjoy watching. Opinions about it wildly vary, but I really don't base my liking a movie on the opinions of others. I watch a movie for myself to determine whether or not I will like it.

Terminator Salvation on the other hand, was poop on poop with a side of poop. The only decent part was the T-800 being all bad ass and beating the shit out of both Connor and Marcus the wanna be T800 with the squishy heart of gold. Honestly, it's the only terminator that landed a fatal blow to its primary target on screen.
Yes yes. He survived because of Marcus donating his miracle heart to save Connor's ass.

Easily Alien,

Terminator 3 is bleh but it's watchable and generally fits in pretty well with the rest of the series. Salvation is mediocre but I wouldn't say it reaches into the realms of being "the biggest piece of shit". Salvation was fun but it didn't feel like a terminator movie, that's really the movies down fall. It was like some weird Mad Max cross over with the Matrix. Like I said before T3 at least felt distinctly like a Terminator movie, even though its over reliance on taking queues from T2 was probably the biggest downfall of the experience.

On the other hand, Alien3 was fucking dumb, it wasn't particularly enjoyable and it just felt cheap, I consider this a bigger step down from the sequel than from T2 to T3, Resurrection had a similar issue, it just kind of lost sight of what made the first two strong entries. Both of these movies almost feel like a made for TV double feature of sequels.

They lost their way with world building as well as losing sight of what made the original so interesting, it's also one of my issues with Aliens but at least that movie was phenomenal yet I still think it's inferior to T2.

Alien was great because it was really subtle in its background story telling, it gave you just enough for you to be able to draw a conclusion and tie it back into the main story and see it's relevance.

Interestingly enough both of the franchises seemed to start as sci-fi horror but then quickly ditched that for action. Terminator 1 takes a lot of queues from slasher movies while Alien takes a good bit of queues from 70s horror movies.

Terminator by far. "Talk to the hand"? Just utter, utter shit. SCC had its moments though.

Alien 3 had a dog alien and Roc, win. Alien Resurrection had the horribly fucked up Ripley clone lab, and an android Winona, win too.

Alien without a question. People will defend Alien 3 but it is just plain bad and has this air of self-importance to it.

Yes Terminator 3 is terrible and gave a giant middle finger to what was accomplished in Terminator 2 but its bearable and Salvation isn't offensive.

well not really...yet
That's a hard choice

With Alien, we got saddled with both Alien 3 and 4. Both undeniably terrible movies.

Then we got AVP 1 and 2. Both total abortions.

To make matters worse, Ridley Scott and James Cameron were both proposing to Fox an Alien 5 made by the both of them, yet FOX went with AVP instead.

Then Ridley shat on the franchise some more with Prometheus.

With Terminator we Got T3 and T4, both bad movies.

A TV show, that was mediocre at best but seems to have it's fans.

And now were getting whats most likely another shitter.

And just like with Aliens, we were also denied a movie from the original creator. James Cameron was setting out to make a Future War T3 but was screwed over by the producers.

Tl;DR, both are in the shitters, and we were denied movies by their respective creators by the fucking studios and producers. But I'd give the edge to Alien as being shat on worst.

The first Alien is the only good movie in the franchise. Terminator has two.

Aliens is on the level of Terminator 2. Silly and vastly inferior to the original.

I'd say they're both equal - one classic, one good movie with the rest being shit.

T3 and Alien 3 aren't nearly as bad as the rest.

Alien 3 more so than T3...but T3 had some good ideas, and one of the ballsiest endings from a big budget hollywood movie.

The rest though?

Yeah total shit

Alien 3 (The director's cut) was very passable and I wasn't offended by it. It was just another movie to me.

Alien 4....Ron Perlman was in it. Overall it was unnecessary and just bland stupid.

T3 and Salvation were just really...off. They didn't have the same feeling of T1 and T2, and nothing memorable about them. Salvation was almost painful to watch at times.
The power of the human heart saved they day and John Conner....fuck you....
Terminator Series def for me

terminator, ultimately.

the wealth of pretty cool extended universe alien stuff is enough to elevate it out of being an unfathomable wreck after aliens.

Alien. Terminator never got roped into the shitty AvP movies.

And I think I'd rather watch T3 and Salvation then Alien 3 or Resurrection.

Alien 3 is decent, and they at least tried something different instead of rehashing

T3 has it's moments, the ending and last 20 minutes are a good close to the "modern" era, the casting wasn't so great and the movie suffers without Linda Hamilton to balance out some of the cheesiness like she did in T2. She fucking kicked ass in T2.

The franchises are interesting because T1 and A1 are paced the same, and are closer to horror movies. T2 and A2 took the franchises in a new direction.

I like the Terminator frachise better, which means I probably hold it to a higher standard, which means I'm biased to say it was shit on worse.

Alien 3 is great. Everything afterwards sucks dick. Terminator 3 is watchable but still shite. Salvation is just pure wank. Didn't care for the Sarah Connor Chronicles. Genesysysysysysys looks proper pony as well.

My answer is Terminator.

Terminator.

Alien 3 was depressing and nihilistic but it was a much better movie than T3 or Salvation by a large margin.

Resurrection was a joke but no worse than the aforementioned Terminator sequels.

If you want to count Prometheus, I'd definitely watch that over the T3/Salavation. At the very least it had ultra gorgeous visuals to help shadow it's mediocre plot whereas T3/Salvation are just trash all around.

Salvation was the biggest botch job of them all though. Everything about it is bad. Terrible, terrible script and then they gave it to a director who managed to make that $200m budget look like $20m.

Am I the only one that clicked on this expecting a movie announcement? Alien franchise got shafted more. I'd watch T3 and Salvation way before I watch Resurrection.

Alien 3 is a classic. Alien 4 however is a cramped tonally broken comedic mess that does nothing to restart the franchise. The thing ends with the Aliens being wiped out again, so what is the damn point of the movie?

Four of my favourites.. Robocop, Predator, Terminator and Alien got all shit on. It's tough man!!

Its tough between these two though.. Terminator 3, 4 were bad. Alien 3 and 4 were bad, but then this BS AVP started too which further shat on the alien character. So I guess that gets my vote.

Fuck T3. This screenshot is the embodiment of everything wrong with T3 and makes my blood boil.

Alien 3 and Resurrection are light years beyond T3 and Salvation.

And T3 is definitely the worst of all of 'em. Absolutely insulting to the franchise.

Also, the AvP movies aren't canon so it's easy enough to hand-wave them away for me personally.

Alien 3 and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines maybe aren't classics but they aren't bad movies either. Resurrection and Salvation freaking suck though...

You guys seriously think T3, Salvation, and Genisys are worse than the 2 AVP movies?

The 2 AVP movies are genuinely offensive.

If those don't count, then Terminator is worse off now.

If we count Prometheus, it's no contest.

Every shitty Terminator sequel from 2003 to the end of time could not approach the shittiness of that film. Prometheus was legitimately one of the worst films I've ever seen.

Terminator can never be good again because Arnold is old as fuck and you're never going to get someone to play a robot and look and act the part as well as he did it. Too iconic.

The Aliens series can survive without Ripley. And they can come up with cool Alien designs.

If we count Prometheus, it's no contest.

Pretty stupid hyperbole...
