Valkyria Chronicles for PC [Nov 11, £14/20/$20, has all DLC, 60fps/1080p+, $14 GMG]

And here I thought I was a pessimist. The one thing I am positive about for the VC PC port is it will be on Steam. It still feels weird to say that but as far as PC publishers go Sega is pretty damn good most of the time.

Seems noone got that I wasn't being entirely serious from the whole "1080i and 24fps" bit right next to it ¯\_(>.<)_/¯

I'm going to be honest though, it's not like Sega's PC port record is entirely spotless. Binary Domain's PC build had its share of issues, and I believe Viking: BFA has been brought up a handful of times in here.

Heh, your hyperbole needs more ludicrousness:

Valkyria Chronicles PC! Now in glorious CGA! Supports Sound Blaster and Roland-compatible soundcards! Minimum requirements: 3x GTX 980s and dual i7 4x00 CPUs.

I really think the whole speculation on the quality of the port depends on who is porting it. And the answer that is needed is not "Sega", obviously.

Ideally porting studios should be more advertised/mentioned, then they can develop a reputation for their quality, and have more of an incentive to do a good job.

I never actually got to finish this on my PS3 but I'll double dip for sure for the chance to end it on PC. Hopefully all this buzz will let Sega consider the other games in the franchise.

The thing I'd say about Sega is their track record on PC is about as good/bad as the average western publisher. Its hard to think of anyone with a spotless record. I think their worst ports were the Dreamcast collection games and they actually bothered to patch those recently which I see as a good sign. Binary Domain seemed fine to me but I only played it months after release and with a joypad.

As far as I know they've never put something out as lazily as Square Enix do with Final Fantasy so I'm cautiously optimistic.

This industry is built on secrets, unfortunately. It's a bit nuts.
Lets hope that whenever Sega graces us with more information, port house is part of that info.

Not only that, but public recognition could also help the good ones to get more and more jobs while making so that the bad ones would get less ports to fuck up.

Wow, what an announcement out of the blue!

Time to finally buy a PC (
OK, get Windows onto my Mac
) just to support this wonderful game.

Yeah, that's what I meant by building a reputation (good or bad).

Sadly, it's not really possible to do so when it's almost impossible in many cases to even find out who ported something.

Is it really? Quite frequently you have either ingame credits, or even a splash screen logo of the porting company.
And it's not like the abysmal work Ubisoft Kiev does stopped anyone from giving them more games to screw around with. :\

Yeah, the only external one I "know" myself is Qloc. I could google easily to check who made the bad ports of DMC3/RE4/Onimusha 3 or who repaired ZoE 2 HD on PS3 (since they hit the news because of their works, in good or bad way), but other than that, no idea.

Nixxes is another great port house, although they seem exclusive to Eidos.

I've only played 2 and it was everything I ever hated in life.

I'm willing to play 1 though. Almost bought a ps3 copy the other day. This announcement comes at the right moment.

Seriously VC2 should be drowned in poop. It'd be appropriate.

VC1 is nothing like VC2.

Its actually good, and not overly tropey animu bullshit. At least not as bad as VC2, dear god Im having flashbacks to that game, I played over 200 hours of VC2. I cant get those back.

Studios that have handled SEGA PC ports in recent years, there's Devil's Details, who ported Virtua Tennis 4, Sonic Generations and Binary Domain, Blit Studios (now BlitWorks), which handled Sonic CD and Jet Set Radio, Hardlight handled Viking Battle for Asgard, but they seem to be doing only mobile games now, Modern Dream did Typing of the Dead Overkill, and there's SEGA Shangai, who ported the Dreamcast Collection titles, Sonic 4 Episode 1 and 2, NiGHTS Into Dreams and Sonic Adventure 2.

A simple way to look at it:

Valkyria Chronicles is like Valkyria Chronicles 2, but good.

Press release is up! Robert Boyd is correct:

VALKYRIA CHRONICLES™ ANNOUNCES ITSELF FOR PC DIGITAL DOWNLOAD, SEGA FOLLOW UP WITH PRE-ORDER DETAILS

In the words of series’ favorite, Aika Thompson, “we’re just getting warmed up!” If you saw the news on twitter on Monday night, which saw ‘Valkyria Chronicles™’ trending worldwide, you’ll know that some eagle-eyed reporters spotted Valkyria Chronicles listed for PC on PEGI’s website. Well, we were going to tell you all about it tomorrow, but we have all the details for pre-ordering and content available at launch right here, right now.

In Valkyria Chronicles, for those who don’t know, players embark on an epic adventure through beautiful environments and battle legions of troops to save the small country of Gallia from total destruction. Valkyria Chronicles is set in a fictitious continent reminiscent of 1930s Europe on the verge of a great war. The game follows Welkin and his fellow soldiers of the Federation’s 7th Platoon that are fighting against the Empire, who is intent on unifying the continent under its power. The emergence of the “Valkyria”- an ancient race with special powers thought to exist only in legends, turns the tide of the war and the Federation’s ability to win and a hope for a better future hangs in the balance.

This Strategy RPG was a critical success, garnering a whopping 86% on Metacritic and even earned a Guinness World Record in 2010 for being the best Strategy RPG on PS3. Valkyria Chronicles will launch for Windows PC via Digital Download on November 11, 2014 and will come bundled with all the DLC that was available for the original PlayStation 3 game including:

· Hard EX Mode (harder versions of skirmish missions in the main game)

· Edy’s Mission “Enter the Edy Detachment” (a side story campaign)

· Selveria’s Mission “Behind Her Blue Flame” (a side story campaign)

· Challenge of the Edy Detachment (six challenge missions)

So you can pre-order now and pick up this award winning, critically acclaimed strategy RPG that’s so good it announced itself, for £14.99/€19.99/$19.99 from selected digital retail partners.

Is VC2 a step down mechanically or do people mostly just hate the cast? Does it fix the balance issues with the Scout class I've heard about?

"selected digital retail partners" makes me think it'll be available on other stores, like... hopefully GOG. But probably not.

In any case, this is a really good deal.

The cast and tone takes a turn for worse, certainly, but also adds quite a few elements that can be considered grinding. (I should note that the original does a pretty good job avoiding the need to grind)

It also changes exp gain from class-based to character based.

The way classmarks (or whatever they were called) were obtained at random was annoying too.

I still enjoyed some aspects of it.

I would definitely jump on a GoG release.

VC2 is a step down in a lot of ways, but they did do some class balancing. Scouts are no longer the power houses they were in VC1. They also added class progression (which also carried over to VC3) where a Shocktrooper could be a Shocktrooper Elite, and so on. This brought a few problems of its own as some classes are clearly more powerful and useful than other classes.

The cast is definitely the worst aspect o VC2, decidedly being a huge step down from the cast in the first game. It's better in VC3, but so far from my current play through, still not as good as the VC1 cast.

The maps are cut down from 1 seamless map into several small maps due to the PSP limitations.
In the first game the progression is chapter to chapter and each chapter was always a new map.
In VC2 it's "do X missions (in repeated maps) until you unlock the next story chapter", so the progression is extremely grindy, killing the entire pacing of the game. I also seem to recall the story missions also reusing maps in VC2.

Really hoping the game is a great port at that price. I hope it's not a disaster like FFXIII was prior to getting fixed by Based God Himself.

It was alright, and I think VC's general mechanics hold up well enough to support 2, but the real let-down was in the pretty bad encounter design, and constant reuse of maps.

Wtf no Hercules Monochrome support? Thanks I'll stick with publishers who treat their fans well, like Sierra and Broderbund.

Binary Domain's PC build had its share of issues
I thought BD was a pretty decent port? Some issues with mouse controls and Optimus laptops.
