Valkyria Chronicles for PC [Nov 11, £14/20/$20, has all DLC, 60fps/1080p+, $14 GMG]

All DLC and £15 is pretty nice. I'll probably get this again as it's been ages since I last played the PS3 one and I stopped playing on a mission in a valley with a lot of bridges (I think).

The inherent blurriness almost looks like a low resolution DOF or vignette effect.

The actual UI elements that overlay the effect seem noticeably more clear.

Thanks for the VC2 insight, everyone.

All I need is a straight port from this, personally, since I haven't played much at all of the original release. Obviously arbitrary resolution support would be a huge improvement.

VC1 remains the best game in the series. The PSP couldn't handle the game design of the first game, so they had to make concessions but still VC2 and VC3 are great games. VC2 is the weakest, but it's still very fun to play. I really liked it but it became too easy in the end (while VC1 offered enough challenge till the end). VC3 is a good step up from VC2, but it's still not as great as VC1. Really close, though.

I'll probably buy VC1 PC soon, but I feel no urge to replay it.

Holy crap my laptop might play this from '05. 2.2 core 2 duo with an 8600m gt. Someone please give me their old pc parts so I can put something into this empty Bitfenix prodigy case that is collecting dust. This game was awesome on PS3.

Preliminary conclusions:
  • The UI elements are certainly higher res, no doubt about that
  • I think the internal rendering resolution on the PC screenshots is almost certainly higher as well (probably 1080p), it just looks "blurry" due to the art style. Which makes it really hard to attempt traditional pixel counting.
  • A good indicator id the fine-grained detail of the "paper" texture towards the borders. Compare and contrast PS3 & PC.

Looks alright, price is good (though I'm not fond of the euro/dollar disparity) and the system specs are very low, so it should probably run great and leave room for optimization/Durante Magicks.

I think it's what I was concerned about with the watercolor paper filter.

I have 1300 hours spent in XCOM:EU/EW. How does this game compare? Note that I am completely heartless and do not give one iota about story, characters, feels, cutscenes, and all that nonsense. All I care about are core game mechanics and systems, and how well the game's tactical combat challenges the player.

The game looking "blurry" is intentional though, and not something which should be "fixed". Even at its native 720p, the PS3 version looks much "blurrier" than a normal 720p game.

What you can see in the PC version is that e.g. the outlines are far more clear and don't have low-res jaggy patterns. Also, the texture used for the paper effect is more detailed/fine-grained. Obviously we need more information, but so far it looks good to me.

This game is much better than XCOM IMO

Better battle system overall and far more interesting mission design. The game is pretty challenging, really hard to cheese through

This is already Top 20...

Anyway, store description says it has Steam Achievements... but no cards? Shame, wanted me some waifu cards.

Screw it, I'll preorder as soon as I get home. Like I said in previous post, now is the time. Start voting with the wallets.

Shame to see the region locks though. SEGA being SEGA...

It has a very unique combat system. You basically have points each turn you can spend on each unit (tanks cost more points to use than foot soldiers), which you then proceed to move in a TPS-like fashion for a limited distance (and potentially under counter fire).

The twist: you can spend points on the same unit multiple times a turn if you want to, but with diminishing returns.

The twist (mk2): you can use the same points to execute "orders", which are either battle-wide or single-unit effects (buffs/debuffs/etc.).

Outside of battles, in the campaign, you have research and unit development somewhat akin to XCOM base gameplay.

Even heartless people (shame on you, really) should absolutely play it if they enjoy strategy games, simply because it plays so differently from everything else out there. It has some balance issues, but if you don't go out of your way to exploit them that doesn't matter much -- since you can enjoy Civ:BE it really shouldn't be an issue for you ;)

Hopefully a new project in the series will show up as well. Either way, Valkyria Chronicles is a brilliant game that deserves more players and this move will certainly see to that.

VC is good game Xcom is better gameplay wise . Vc has some difficultly spikes that can throw you for a loop but in the end it is worth the asking price .

I think I'll pre-order this. I never got around to finishing it on PS3 and I want Sega to see continued interest in their stuff coming to computers.

This sounds super sweet, sold. A command point style system is something I'm super comfortable with since it is how most tactics-level hex-and-chit wargames operate.

Are the missions scripted or randomly generated?
All missions are scripted, and some have pretty unique objectives (which might also be updated mid-mission) -- including the widely hated most challenging mission in the game, which is also my favourite.

There are both mandatory story campaign missions and optional side missions, as well as the opportunity to replay story missions in a more challenging way (e.g. without a tank).

Despite it being my favourite game of all time, I've somehow never gotten round to playing all the DLC. I've just recently bought myself a gaming PC so this is perfect timing.

I wonder if there's any chance of seeing VC 2 and/or 3 make the jump across. They both scrub up pretty well in PPSSPP, but it would be great to see proper PC versions and an official VC3 translation (they could always use the fan translation, polish it a bit and finish it off).

Hypothetically, with the current consoles being so PC-like, could Sega bring this out for those? Very interested and will buy on PC, but I really need to get steam home streaming working so I can play in the living room.

The hair texture is a dead giveaway for >720p internal rendering resolution.
