Valkyria Chronicles for PC [Nov 11, £14/20/$20, has all DLC, 60fps/1080p+, $14 GMG]

See, I thought cards were supposed to make people excited so they would pre-order. Is there a technical reason for every bullet except cards to appear?

Oh, it's time to quit my Halloween mask.

the devs probably don't know about steam trading cards

Let's be honest, if cards are the make/break variable deciding people's purchases, I'd think it would say how low gaming has come.

Well, if those guys who avoided VC1 to begin with on PS3 for "no trophies" didn't make it said already.

please tell me if this game has a better cast/plot than VC2, better strategic gameplay and whatnot
because i played VC2 and that is genuinely one of the worst plots/casts i have ever seen in a game

the strategic side was pretty good but there was a grinding factor to it which was annoying- does VC1 have that as well?
i really want to give it a shot but that really annoying repeated map/grindy aspect bothered me a lot for VC2

Plot's much better, grander in scope, and has far less Japanese-high-school-story cliches and caricatures. You level up your units by class, which helps keep the game at a steady pace. Still grinding if you don't want to A-rank every mission for maximum experience, but it's not like you need over-powered units to win battles however you wish.

I had to get on the GMG deal, I've always wanted to try this game out.

I'm thinking about gifting a copy to my friend but I wonder if he'll enjoy it.

Bought through GMG. Can't wait to go through this again. Absolute gem of a game. Can't wait to read newcomers reactions.

It's gonna be so weird playing this game with a 360 controller...

can't fucking wait.

Yeah this is such a hidden gem of a game.

Haha, people get excited about steam trading cards?

Yes, I know several people who can be tipped across the edge of buying a game via cards, including myself.

They aren't a big deal, or a requirement, but it's a bonus that can easily make you impulse buy.

Personally I like them most for backgrounds and emoticons, so they can sway my purchase with more power than you'd expect.

It's top spot at GetGamesGo, 2nd at GMG (Simulators will eat us all), 1st on Gamersgate according to their top seller filter, and is on Amazon for preorder but hasn't been advertised yet.

Looks good so far. It did fall out of the Steam top 20 though for now.

Only reason it isn't in the Steam top 20 is because these other sites offer it for cheaper ;)

Still hoping for VC 2 HD nd VC 3 HD if the VC numbers are good. And course VC 4 pc exclusive.
That'd be a dumb suicidal move given its relevance in Japan. Nevermind that given the game's style I don't really see what it has to gain from PC exclusivity versus hitting PC and consoles.
Though I half suspect it'd be 3DS/PC as absurd as that probably sounds.

If I were the power that be, I would get rid of achievements and cards and trophies from the face of this planet.

Specifically about the grind: not nearly as bad as VC2. The second game introduced a more complex class system, where you could turn each base class into one of several upgraded classes using various loot collected from missions. That contributed heavily to the grind to upgrade all the characters. VC1 just has the base scout/shocktrooper/lancer/engineer/sniper setup, with all classes becoming elite once you upgrade them enough. Upgrades only rely on training points, there's no additional farming for certificates or whatever it was VC2 had.

My first playthrough of VC1 involved some grinding just to level up classes, but you'll almost never find yourself replaying skirmishes more than once just because one of your characters is missing some dumbshit certificate needed to upgrade to Elite Gunner or whatnot. VC2 had the right idea by adding more classes to increase the variety, but the execution was poor. VC3 improves this substantially by throwing out the additional requirements and reverting to a simple experience-point system where each character gains points towards class upgrades just by using them.

As for the repeated maps: not really a big problem in the campaign, slightly more so in the skirmishes (but that's because they're basically campaign maps that you replay over and over). VC1 is the game with the best production values and it shows in multiple ways.

I'd make sure that everyone still got wallpapers that they'd normally get from cards though. And the themes, complimentary for buying a game.

Well, maybe I wouldn't get rid of them.

But if I were to design a game, I would include achievements like logging 1 trillion hours, or crafting 3 billion of the most dififcult end-game items (super rare, 0.000000000001% drop rate materials needed [7 of them]).

Good thing you don't have that power. I'd be mighty unhappy.
I'm not sure what to say when people buy Agarest for the wallpapers and cards, if it even happens that often.
I rarely (if ever) go out of my way to buy individual games for the cards, but I have bought some Humble Bundles with the knowledge that I can resell the cards and get an ever better deal!

Maybe it's a good thing VC's one of the highest sellers on GMG, GamersGate, and the like. SEGA probably didn't plan on revealing this launch until after the Halloween Sale ended, but the timing's still apt for buyers to cash in seasonal discounts at other stores, which still gathers attention to the pre-order.

but you can craft badges with trading cards ;_;

and they look real cool on your profile ;_;

I misread your sentence as "I've seen lots of other SEGA games on Steam."

Damn near had a heart attack.

For a second I though someone spotted a bunch of Steam registry entries for upcoming releases... :(

Did Valve completely locked info out to prevent something like the massive leak from 2013? Would've been awesome to suddenly spot stuff in the registry from SEGA, Konami and others.

edit:

Well, there are lots of SEGA games on Steam..

Though I wish there were more..

We (well, I! :p) wish for more japanese SEGA releases. I'm fine with the western-developed ones, it's the japanese side that's sorely lacking.

Play a game with undropped cards on your account and sell it. Simple. Or if you have none, I'll send a card your way (Steam name is ValkyrurS7).

Thank you for the offer bit I have cards. Some are dupes but I have never sold before and I am unsure if it fits with my hoarding mentality.

And then there is that stupid Bionic Beanie sitting there. Tormenting me.

I really agree with that.

It seems like a lot of my favourite SEGA games are the ones that aren't localized or put on the PC as much..

It's so so nice seeing more of SEGA's Japanese games on the PC.

How is it not?

Making $.50 back on a $17.50 purchase isn't a profit. You're still eating $17 to make $.50.

People that go "OH BUT YOU MAKE MONEY OFF THE CARDS" are overlooking you have to: 1) get in early and 2) be playing an anime title to "sell high"--IF the demand is even there--to make a profit.

It depends on how you see it. If you buy a game for $14 and get $14 worth of "game" out it which you wanted. you could see the $1 or whatever you make off of selling its cards as "profit".

It's still money you get back that you wouldn't get without cards so it's the reasonable thing to want them. Also I made back more than I paid a few times, waiting can pay off if the game isn't successful so few cards are on the market and you don't have to play anything, not even installing the game is necessary thanks to tools like Idle Master.

Well if people are buying games to sell cards that'd be stupid. But for games you already purchase, getting some money back isn't bad. I've made around $50 off Steam cards that I would never have gotten otherwise and I barely put in any effort to maximize selling price.

That's ignoring what I'm getting at. You're still eating a "massive" loss for small monetary gain. Unless you're getting these titles on Steam sales to where the loss is less, you're still eating money for a small refund. Unless you luck out and get in on launch day, get all your cards and sell them for $5+ of the demand before the demand crashes in a few hours/days.

Honestly, though: I'm not a fan of the Steam card system. Badges are neat and all, but the stuff you get from that is random to where if you REALLY want a smiley/emoticon and background, you're left to Valve's RNG to getting them. No point in crafting badges then since you can't get what you wanted.

At least in CS:GO/TF2/DOTA's case you can at least barter for what you wanted with free/random timer drops. You have a set... set of cards... for the trading card system. Which already makes the RNG for the badges even more terrible.
