This has nothing to do with it being cross-gen. The reason why MGSV is cross-gen is because of Konami, they don't have many big franchise left so of course they had to make it cross-gen.

Yes there is plenty of stuff in Unity which screams lazy development. Resolution, blurriness, pop-in, framerate etc.

I give you that Arno's animations when he climbs are very nice but if that is all a company of 10 (!) studios working on the game can come up with then sorry but again that screams "lazyness" to me especially how big this freakin company is.

This is something that the industry needs to be called out on more often. Publishers like Ubisoft makes it a point to hype their latest games' visuals, but will also throw the "it not all about the visuals" line at the drop of a hat if they don't get the response they want.

Completely different open ended mission structure that adapts instead of just desyncing when the player goes off the beaten path, actual stealth and a cover system, skill trees and armor/weapon customization that makes a big difference all sound like pretty good new ideas to me.

That wasn't a day one patch.

Yeah, those 10 studios are also probably working on other 10 Ubisoft games, at the same time.
This is how Ubi operates, it's an assembly line, it may be cynical and hurt their game design, or even technical polish, but it doesn't make the people drawing, coding, modelling etc etc slack offs, which is what calling them lazy implies.

First: Unity does NOT look better than MGSV.

Second: Oh yeah of course complain about pop-in from an unfinished product sure why not. Kojima even stated he didn't want to show it because it was still in early stage but he did it for the fans.

Third: Pop-in was in the Afghanistan demo but i haven't seen anything in the new African jungle demo so yeah they probably fixed it already.

Come on now, of course when they make a new Asscreed game they do all that stuff but they never try to challenge them with doing stuff differently like giving the people jobs etc.
They never try to push them selfs with new stuff and with new i mean really new things and not just a different hero and era. It's the same dilemma with Call of Duty. Both of these big franchises have that problem right now.

How about an "I've played AC before" option to let us skip the tutorial crap? One of the things I've hated about Ubisoft games is how they try to create the illusion of player freedom by giving you a huge world to explore, but then claw that back by forcing you to play in a restrictive manner. A game like this should reward creative play styles. Not suffocate them.

You seem to be bringing up things like animations and city scale, but I've been fooled so many times before. I'll be keeping a very close eye on this to see how the game design has changed. If it's more of the overly familiar, then I'll pass. If Ubisoft has actually created something different this time, then colour me interested. Won't be taking your word for it though. Keep being dismissive all you want. I loved AC2 and it pains me to see the series (and others) smothered with the same turgid gameplay. I would love to be excited for this game, but I can't until I actually see actual, meaningful improvements to game design. Again, if you want to hear my ideas for the franchise, ask away.

Shadows of Mordor showed with their 'nemesis' system how a mechanic can elevate a game into 'next-gen' territory despite some shortcomings. They clearly had a target audience and knew exactly what they wanted to achieve.

On the flip side, I'm reminded of that Star wars and CGI quote whenever I think of AC:U now. The one about 'density' of aliens and people on screen. The full parody is done by redletterboxmedia for information. On its own the adaptive mission mechanic (AMM) sounded really cool and would/will/remains to be seen if it can freshen up the 4/5 basic mission structures. There have also been improvements to the parkour to stop that annoying run up walls and random trees, and we now have a climb down option. Then we have combat improvements - nothing too complex but a step up from counter, counter, counter. Then finally we actually got a low-profile/crouch option! If they had stopped there and then produced something with the fidelity of Black Flag with the 125 or so NPC's they could generate, I'm guessing most would have happy. I mean there were no complaints about density in ACII.....

I find it hard to criticise devs too much when they are attempting to push the boat out a little more or create unique experiences but somewhere along the lines it's just as though some bad decisions were made, or more technical boast/egocentric ones. Making the city almost a of scale 1:1 makes everything bigger which requires more NPC's to make it feel more 'alive' and populated. It's going back to the same argument we were on the precipice of coming into this generation. Gamers don't necessarily want 'bigger', they want immersion and densely packed content. Ubisoft looks like they have tried to deliver both, as well as several improved and/or new mechanics above. For what it's worth the actual cityscapes look fairly decent from all the screenshots and videos, but the NPC's just seem like from a last gen open world game (thinking skyrim), they just stand out too much and the models look plain weird at times. I don't know what the engine is doing but the popup looks awful as well. I don't think we're going to get a consistent experience from this game and hence all the entrenched opinions that we're still seeing this late before release. We had problems with stutter and choppiness in Boston/NY/Frontier in ACIII that were never properly sorted, it also had NPC pop in and pop out when running - the answer is not to suddenly inflate everything to a huge scale and bank on new hardware handling it. Get everything running perfectly at one scale first then scale up......

Can this just be patched out by lowering the NPC generator count? Maybe change it for the whole game or provide menu options for low-medium-high?
