DORITOS Presents: SONY vs. MICROSOFT 2014 THE HYPERBOWLLLLL

Sony hasn't had to do anything up to this point. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Also, Sony as a corporation is bleeding money. It's likely using the revenue from PlayStation to keep itself in the green rather than re-investing heavily into the brand.

Wat???

You know they have GTA V, Far Cry 4, Driveclub, LBP3 bundles in EU right. This is more SCEA not doing bundles that anything.

To OP - I don't think Sony will be that stressed if they lose both november and december expect it's by a large margin which seems unlikely. There have a 1M or so lead already and they will be most likely be back to being the top seller from next year.

A low end estimate: the PS4 will ship a minimum of 6M consoles this quarter.

A $50/console cut would cost Sony $300M

Do you think winning one month in one territory is worth $300 million?

MS only cut the price in NA, Sony could do the same.

Of course they don't, especially when they are coming from seven years of losing nearly every month. Every win is celebration, even loss is just a loss and nothing to worry about so long as sales are still respectable and within expectations.

Even if MS do somehow 'win' a month, it won't be by a huge margin. It'll be very close and there'll certainly be no cause for alarm at Sony HQ.

Plus winning a month here won't make up for being crushed in Europe and Japan (although neither are selling well there TBH). And If MS is really stupid enough to end the price drop after December, Sony will simply run them over for another 9-10 months straight.

I really don't understand MS's thinking with this. Why wasn't this a permanent global price drop? They were far more aggressive with the original Xbox. People say this move shows that they're serious about competing, but the limited temporary nature of the drop tells me they've already accepted that a distant second globally is the best they can hope for.

knack x killzone or infamous bundle will be their black friday bundle for $400

i dont see a price drop like microsoft since its still selling a lot

MS is dipping into that war chest for sure. The US is pretty much the only country they have to worry about losing for a month but they still have a wide lead so they won't be complaining. Should be interesting though and if MS doesn't win then oh man. That would be exciting.

Doesn't BF usually account for a very large portion (more than half?) of November sales in the US? Perhaps Sony are targeting their marketing specifically towards that.

I have no doubt Microsoft is losing a significant amount of Money with the lower price and pack-in games. With the momentum Sony has had all year they may feel confident in having fantastic sales while not sacrificing profits - they may even be willing to let Microsoft outsell them for the months of November and December. e.g. if Microsoft sells 900,000 and Sony 700,000. They may still feel happy as they did without any discounting.

I feel like Halo MCC XBO will beat the PS4 GTA V bundle easily. Should be a fun month for sure.

PS4 will still dominate worldwide so I don't think they will clinch because Xbox is having a U.S. fire sale out of desperation. After seeing how November goes then they can reevaluate their plan.

Where are the bundles/discounts? Is Sony really so confident that they think November will be a cake walk when their competitor dropped the price by $50 with a game to boot? 2 of the biggest games of November are bundled with the Xbox One, CoD and Unity. Then there is the MCC. Still no announcement of the PS4 GTAV bundle for the USA. Heck even the Wii U will do well this month with the launch of Smash. I'm not saying the PS4 won't do well in November but I can't see it selling better than the Xbox One for the month.

If Xbox One price drop is only for the next 2 months it's only going to make the sales slow down even more after the new year. so if they move 4 million over Nov & Dec at a $50 discount losing $200,000,000 to get to 10 million sold while PS4 move all the units they can ship over the next 2 months without a price cut taking them somewhere in the 18 to 20 million range with continued sales after the new year I would say they are making the right move by making all the money they can at full price without cutting prices & bundling until Black Friday & Christmas.

I belive that the #1 factor in buying a console is "Which one are my friends playing?" #2 is probably price. So with that or there, I think the PS4 will still win each month, but just barely.

Momentum really is a thing during the console war.

My best guess, Sony does nothing or they do a GTA or Far Cry bundle. Or unleash more Destiny bundles.

Destiny bundles are not sold out any where but the demand for that has dropped significantly. At least from Amazon as I can see. So I don't know what you mean by unleash more Destiny bundles.

Value adds of first party games. Cost effective and won't hit the bottom line as much.

A bundle with TLoU:R, Infamous SS and FL and GTA5 would be pretty damn appealing, even next to the X1 and its recent holiday price cut.

I agree with this. If we do see any bundles it will be 1st party games.

A Troy Baker bundle would be nuts!

One month in the NPD isn't going to cause any panic at SCE when they're guaranteed to continue crushing MS worldwide. That's assuming they actually lose November which isn't a certainty.

3 xbox one bundles (#8/, #10, #12 ) and the only ps4 is #16, no way the PS4 will win november in USA. Absolutely no way.

And there are two more XB1s skus ahead of the Destiny bundle. To be fair though, there will naturally be a sales increase on the release date (official date at least) of bundles so we have to see where things level out.

Isn't it more of a case Sony can't do certain bundles because MS has them? Like with AC Unity.

Nope. For some odd reason they aren't bringing even [one/b] of the bundles they have in Europe to the US.

There is that first expansion pack coming.

I just got back from Best Buy getting my 50$ refund on SO bundle. I walked over to the game section and saw one SO bundle, two AC bundles and two kincect bundles. I saw one PS4 on the shelf so logic tells me PS4 has won the war even with the price cut. /sarcasm

I think all games will do well this holiday. There is tons of content for both systems now and lots of games are coming. I can see people starting to get pressured by their kids to pick up a PS4, Xbox One, or Wii U system this holiday.

I'm sure they both will have some BF offers for major retailers in the coming weeks.

Looking like XB1 is doing really well just now with the new deals so I think they will win pretty easily.

Like others have said though it's one country for one or two months, doubt Sony will be concerned.

A month ago I would've thought they would have a GTAV bundle for the US, but at this point it doesn't seem likely. Maybe they thought the white Destiny bundle would have longer legs. I'm still seeing ads on TV for the Taco Bell promotion to win a Destiny bundle (which basically doubles as an ad for the bundle and Taco Bell). There's still time to announce a holiday bundle before Black Friday, but I can't see it being GTA.

There will BE a PS4 GTA5 bundle this holiday. Ull shay ut un br4jen lagage if it helps you listen.

I'd be shocked to my very core if there isn't.

There is that first expansion pack coming.

lol come on now

For what it is worth, Amazon sent out advertisements for the deal just this morning. At least I got one this morning.

I think Amazon can be a reasonable source of sales data, but the hourly chart is too volatile.

yeah agree, PS4 has been top selling for ever in those hourly chart. I doubt few hours of Xbox One will change anything. So don't read too much into the hourly chart. Best selling item of 2014 is a good source though. But these bundles won't even make it into that unless they stay on top 5 hourly chart for at least a month.

As others have said, it's all about which console sells better the last few days of the month (Black Friday).

If retailers do some unofficial PS4 bundles after Thanksgiving (which I expect), that could more than make up for these early days.

Maybe they will try to counter, maybe they wont. Maybe they will try a wait n see approach, maybe they will be aggressive.

Sony is in a place where they could actually just wait n see. You can best believe if the roles were reversed MS wouldnt be doing all these deals. And Sony would be.

Did people forget Microsoft won last December? Didn't exactly do anything in the long term. It's telling that Microsoft needs insane bundles to even stay close.

You want to know what happens if Xbox One "wins" November NPD? Sony announces they've sold 15 million PS4s to date and suddenly nobody gives a shit about NPD numbers (not that you should to begin with).

The only thing they could do to compete IMO is making the GTA V Bundle $350 here. I don't know if they can do that though -- especially since the game is a retail copy instead of a digital code.

Xbox One bundles are doing well because they have a lot of value. New gen console and free games with those free games being part of really big gaming franchises (Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed). They are new entries in the series too so that helps a lot.

Someone's in battle.

I was hoping for at least a free game with the system purchase, even if the price stayed $399. I'll keep watching, but I'm going to get my PS4 around the launch of Dragon Age: Inquisition no matter what.

Sony don't have to do anything, they are outselling them two to one globally, with very little effort.

As a Corporation why would they bother?

Yeah 350$ with GTA V is a no way in Sony's book. But I can see them doing 400$. But if they pull something like Destiny, where you pay 450$ and get a game. I don't think that's going to work this holiday.
