Week of November 3rd to 9th, 2014.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread. An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at the Uraizen persuasion!

What fighting games do you currently play, what is your all time favourite and why?
What I currently play is a bit of a hard question to answer. I like to play a variety of them at a time. Every few months I switch it up to prevent fatigue. At the time of this interview I’ve been playing a combination of Street Fighter x Tekken and Melty Blood. There are rare nights where I can be seen playing UNIEL and P4U, but I would rather just play something that’s ready to go on my PC.

My favorite is Street Fighter III: Third Strike, it’s the one game I never get bored of or am not in the mood to play.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
I’ll try to answer this in two parts since I assume current means ones that recently came out this past generation.

Current Favorite – I’m fond of the status effects in the Persona games. If done properly, I could see it utilized well in other games. Kind of like how Vorpal gives you extra damage and a Roman Cancel in UNIEL. Just done on a character by character basis instead.

Favorite Overall – Parry. There is nothing more satisfying to me in the entire genre. Here’s some light reading you should do courtesy of Nyoro SF who finally put into words what I never could: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=136126900&postcount=401

Current Least Favorite – Gems. Do I really have to explain? It’s not that they’re good, they just serve no major purpose. Get that garbage out of my SFxT if you patch it again, Ono.

Least Favorite Overall – Plinking, by far. When you have players modifying their sticks just to make links easier by rewiring a button? No, thank you.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
My parents bought me Mortal Kombat games and Street Fighter 2 for me as a kid along with one of those Capcom Arcade Sticks. I couldn’t get into either of them, so I would rarely touch them. It wasn’t until the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection released here and I got to play 3s for the first time that I got really into fighters. I took a look at the back cover and said “wait, they made a third one?!” My first reaction was like everybody else’s when I played it. I had wondered where all of my favorites went. I eventually warmed up to the new cast, though.

I play mainly fighters and action games. When I say action games, I mean games like Ninja Gaiden Black, Devil May Cry 3, Bayonetta, God Hand, Metal Gear Rising, etc. Very rarely do I enjoy games outside of those two genres.
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
Oh God, I have to choose just one? There are so many good ones, though! I’ll go with Dudley since he was my favorite for years before any of these new games ever came out. I liked his attitude and his cr.hk juggles. It’s as simple as that, it doesn’t take much for me to like a character.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
Heh, offline I have to handicap myself if I want to keep my friends playing. So there’s no real play style there other than to try and please them.

In general, I play the high risk, high reward characters like Makoto. She happens to be who I play in 3s as well. If there is a character that is unorthodox, a glass cannon, or has a command grab you can combo after, there’s a strong chance I’ll play them.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
My biggest strength is that I am stubborn. If I get beat by someone, I always go into that lab and want that runback badly.

My biggest weakness is that I sometimes laugh off my losses when I should learn from them and that gets me nowhere.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
What career? I spent my childhood getting my ass beat by my friend’s Jun in TTT at the arcade. Yes, just Jun, I was so bad at Tekken then and I’m bad at it now.

I did eventually get better and started beating those that beat me consistently. So I suppose that would be a “best” moment. I never did get to fight that kid again, though.
What do you want from future fighting games?
PC Ports
Better netcode
Simultaneous worldwide releases
Cheaper versions with only online, versus, and practice.
Simultaneous console/PC release with the arcade version if we get the above.
More interesting systems like CvS2’s grooves, Melty’s moons, UNIEL’s vorpal, etc.

Almost none of this will ever happen, but I don’t care. It’s my wishlist and I can list whatever I want.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
AnneIFrank
Since Dahbomb strongly encourages pre-orders, what games do you plan to buy that have been officially announced?

On GAF we have various members that stream fighting games from time to time too. If you would like to add your channel to this thread, send me a PM.

Often, some fighting games can seem intimidating to players new and old. Below are a bunch of resources that may be of aid to new players, or handy as references.
  • Learn How To Play Fighting Games Free eBook from Shoryuken is a fantastic primer for new players to the genre.
  • Footsies Handbook is a guide to the potentially elusive, but integral part of doing well in any fighting game.
  • NeoGAF's Arcade Stick Thread is the place to go for questions about anything arcade stick-related.
  • Step Up Your Game is an editorial series by Justin Wong that covers a multitude of topics, notably focusing on strengthening your mental game and playing smarter instead of harder.
  • Tips for first time competitors will help you straighten out those nerves and expectations when you head out to your first tournament.
  • Domination 101 is almost a cult classic article in the FGC, which has Seth Killian telling us how he really feels about the idea of "cheapness" in fighting games.
  • Team-building Guide by our very own Karsticles, which helps make it easier to approach team-building in MvC games, and games with similar synergistic elements.
For a list of NeoGAF OTs for specific fighting games, as well as a list of non-GAF fighting game communities that may be of interest, check out the FGW Archive where these resources can be found on separate sheets at the bottom.

If you have any suggestions for the OP, please do not hesitate to post in this thread or (preferably) PM me to let me know.

ahahaha wow @ that bonus question in the weekly interview. And yes, you should pre-order UNIEL because It's A Good Game(tm).

Re-posting from the previous thread because I managed to post it about 9 seconds too late:

The DOA5U thread isn't that popular either
The fact that the OT is even active (mainly due to DoA5:LR being announced) puts it above 95% of the games on this site, free. Threads on this site mainly follow the main news cycles, which means hype hype hype per-release and then throw it into the digital roundfile once the game actually comes out unless it's a mega-release. I doubt you'll even see that many SSB4 posts once the game comes out outside of the OTs unless something big happens (like new DLC being announced, or a thread for a major tournament like Apex or Evo).

Hell, I wish every fighting game got more attention -- the biggest issue is that every developer of them is some combination of ass-backwards and broke. Posting trends on forums and social media are a symptom of that, not a cause.

psst Enzo the European release date for Smash got pushed up a week

ha, even the Smash OTs themselves fizzled out just like I thought they would, all that pre-release hype was just that

Smash hype crashed and burned with a lot of people going "oh okay that was neat" and leaving forever. Nothing will ever be as hype as Japan time and this makes me sad :/

What is the date now?

And Smash is pretty much all I'm playing now. Don't really have much to post because it's all grinding, but it is what it is and I'm having fun working towards different goals.

I haven't dedicated a lot of time to fighting games (just finished up the Bayo duology) but same here, though I plan on putting less time into Smash 3DS and I'm gonna grind a lot more once the Wii U version comes out. Fucking hate playing Olimar without a controller.

pre-release hype is always what generates all of the discussion for smash

once the game is actually out it becomes a lot more boring for a lot of people. not to mention people are actually playing the game instead of speculating about it.

the smash 3ds OT is basically a "anyone wanna play? here's my friendcode" thread.

Lmao that's true. It seems like its always something holding a game back. MK9 was good game for MK fans to get competitive in but it had a a lot of weird design issues that stemmed from wanting to be different in some areas.

Harada doesn't want to give up frame data, SFV may take forever to come out so they're still getting milk from SF4 but just only a little. No patch for MVC3. VF and DOA suffer from image issues and Tekken is on its way there too. KOF is like the 2D versions of those games when they were popular and KOFXIV is up in the air. Soul Calibur just hasn't been the same since SCIII.

Yeah..issues man.

Whoa thanks for the links enzo

gonna preorder Xrd

but I think I'll go to gamestop and pay it off in full instead of using amazon

For those of you who don't read gaming or CAG or Slickdeals or whatever and plan on preordering games: two years of Gamers Club Unlocked (20% off all games, among other perks) is $15 at Best Buy. Go sign up and preorder Xrd there instead of Amazon, or something.

Yes, it works on collector's/special editions.

Does the Best Buy Gamer's Club thing work towards GG Xrd as well? Will I get the $10 rebate if I pre-order it?

That would mean that I can get the game for $38.

Edit: NVM it doesn't work for GGXrd. Lame as fuck... not gonna pre-order now.

It's not on the list of games that give you an extra $10 back for preordering. The 20% off does work, though.

(Also, I know you're planning on getting the PS4 version, but it might bear reminding for everyone else out of the loop that the PS3 version is going to be $50.)

so do we know if anyone else is going to use the skullgirls ps4 gimmick that lets us use our ps3 sticks?

i'm guessing no

Thank Uraizen and Dahbomb for illuminating our lives!

On one hand, lol @ a poverty gamer demographic buying a PS4

On the other hand, there's only like, 5 other things to play on PS4 this Christmas

Oh, dunno if this is in the works or not- but having videos like the Raiden/Quan Chi/Kano videos for the original 6 reveals detailing their variants would be really cool and a good way to fill "gap time" between bigger reveals.

Exactly what I want to see. I want to have a better example of what the others do.

The last time I used Amazon for a game pre-order it got stolen by a shifty mailman. Thanks mailman.

Off topic: Bro, if you want to watch porn, you know there's plenty of it out there right?

Haha. I see plenty man. Internet is my ocean of fun. Just saw bombs comment and googled it too. I'm jaded man, I need to see new oceans, heh.

Back on topic. I played mortal kombat 1 and 2 this weekend. Man, I miss the atmosphere and sounds effects from those games. Not the gameplay though.

brb searching for "spinning piledriver Elena"

need to learn the match up

SafeSearch off because it might get violent
