Replacing a 3DS screen

I got this one really obnoxious scratch on my 3ds xl, and I have no idea how it happened. I always keep it in the case, so it's quite a mystery. It's super distracting and I'm thinking about replacing the screen (top). Has anyone done this? And what I'm unsure of, is there an external cover on the 3ds xl? Meaning, is the scratch on the actual screen itself, or a screen cover? Any tips would be much appreciated!

I replaced a GBA screen once. Well, the cover. The LCD is under the glass. It came out alright thanks to the kit I bought from Nintendo.

I'd just send my 3DS to Nintendo now. I'd be afraid of really messing it up.

Easy, I managed it:

1. buy a replacement 3DS XL screen lens (NOT the whole screen) off ebay.
2. remove old screen lens with an adhesive hook. put new one on.

Someone I know is having a hard time removing the stripped screws on the original 3DS. I take it they're replacing something different.

Yup, no need to replace the entire lcd, just the outside plastic lense; just remove it with a shim and some heat from a hair dryer.

I wish I had known this earlier. I don't think I'm going to bother now with New 3DS coming.

What!? You can just lift it off, essentially? I have these fantastic bezel marks so a new screen cover would be nice.

yep. it's literally as easy as that. no dissasembly required. you just need:

one of these:

one of these, to get the old lens off:

and one of these, to get rid of any dust:

total cost: fuck all.

Bear in mind that some of the replacement lenses come with no adhesive. In this case, use a TINY amount of superglue around the edges, or even just in the corners. Like, a tiny amount. It'll do fine.
