So I'm watching some womens Rugby League at the moment, it's the opener for a international mens game later on in the afternoon. It's all pretty much identical, no lingerie to try jazz it up.

I read that there's a womens competition but the NFL seems to have distanced themselves from that instead of embracing it.

Was almost a fight then. There's a girl called Renae Kunst playing.

Let me answer it like this... 80% or more Americans just thought the same thing I did, which is "there's a women's NFL?"

I know that lingerie football is a thing.

It's hard to take womens football seriously when stupid shit like THE LINGERIE BOWL is the only thing that gets TV time nationally.

For as much as I know, there are only semi-pro female football teams not counting the stuff like the Lingerie Leagues and such

Although I dont ever see womens american football ever taking off. Women sports that are generally fun to watch are those of which which require more dexterity then strength, and sports like football put a huge emphasis on strength compared to something like Tennis, Basketball, Softball, Soccer and Golf

Not only that, you gotta get past years of cultural segregation that makes it so young girls want to play football instead of those other sports. Most people would probably balk at their daughter playing football instead of soccer

Honestly, i'd probably watch a competitive league of Womens American Football, but then again, I did watch the UFL

I don't take anything NFL-related seriously.

Women's Football, however, is definitely taken seriously.

Do people call it gridiron still, like when they are going to a game or watching it on TV do you say "I'm watching gridiron" or is it just football?.

Yeah womens soccer is popular, is why I didn't say football in the title.

I don't even know if I'd agree with that. The women's professional league in all sports has practically failed.

Big international tournaments like the world cup or the Olympics will of course get a much bigger draw. After that, well unfortunately women sports fall off drastically.

It's just "football". We only call it "gridiron" to distinguish it from the regular football aka soccer. Even then, we prefer the term "American football".

Also, I feel football is a sport women would rather watch than play.

Women's football just isn't even a thing in the US. The most high-impact women's sports we have right now are MMA and Hockey, but that's really only a thing during the Olympics. And women's MMA looks a lot different than Men's due to the strength difference. (This isn't a bad thing though- the increased emphasis on wrestling and submissions is really cool.)

Womans MMA is taken seriously thanks to Ronda Rousey. She single-handedly changed everyones perception.

It was sad that half the reason was because she is pretty. A lot of the female MMA fighters aren't exactly lookers (and who can blame them when they take the punches to da face)... its thought that it was a combination of her skill and her looks that gave her respect. Even Dana White who was very iffy about womens MMA in the past have come around.

There is a lot of sexism going around about women fighting. A lot of people "sick" watching women fight because they are these fragile things that should be protected and cant kick ass. Its really sad for the thousands of women who feel the urge to fight and compete in martial arts and who are looked down for wanting to be strong.

EDIT; and of course there is also the matter that some men become insecure about their masculinity if their "woman" could beat them up. gender roles ahoy. As someone who has gotten my ass kicked by women multiple times in sparring I can only say that a lot of men need to be beaten by women to keep their inflated egos in check. you learn humility when someone smaller, lighter and with a smaller frame beats you with speed, flexibility, strategy and technique. both on the ground and standing!

Not at all, no. Women athletes in general are not paid proportionate to their male counterparts. It's understandable the men get paid more since more people watch but I'm talking a huge discrepancy.

That's just the thing though. I know there are many women that could beat me in a fight or be better than me at football or be better than me at basketball, etc. However there just aren't any women that are better than the best men in their respective sports. Women's sports aren't bad but men's sports are just better in most cases and people just prefer watching the superior product.

Well the women in this game are apparently the first to get paid for the match.

I'm actually pretty happy with the way Australia treats womens sports. It could always be better but yeah.

This is why it ended up working in MMA once people got over their preconceptions. Because of the weight classes going from lightweight to heavyweight, there were already very different "types" of MMA depending on the size of the individuals, and Women's is just another flavor.

Women aren't barred from the NFL, so any woman could play if she were good enough and made a team. There is no "women's NFL", any pro or semi-pro leagues aren't affiliated with the NFL.

If you were to take a proportion based on money generated or interest, the proportion is in the female athletes (in major team sports) favor. The WNBA is not profitable even with their low salaries (kept afloat by the NBA), and the NWSL is barely getting along.

The last time I checked the statistics though.. Women's divisions in MMA have more "finishes" through TKO or Submissions than most Mens divisions.

In any case.. Women's sports aren't given much attention in the US. Outside of Olympics, the most push any Women's sport has gotten was the WNBA which didn't get Television coverage very long. Outside of that I think Women's Soccer and Women's Football (Lingerie League) got the next biggest pushes as far as TV is concerned. I think there's just too much of a stigma for most American households unfortunately.

Recently Women's MMA has been getting coverage but it's different situation in that Women's MMA fights are on the same fight cards as Men's.

Sports is an entertainment business. Male athletes were paid scraps before television deals and unions that could leverage ticket sales existed. There is no great demand for women's sports at the box office or on television. Why wouldn't there be a huge discrepancy?

Women's MMA has been legit for years. Carano was every bit as marketable as Rousey -- probably more so.

Dana was just late to the game, and now the masses can see them because they're on UFC.

you know the sad part? They fucking play their hearts out every game. they took this as a serious competition.

The women who play in that league are no joke. They're legitimate athletes that train and play extremely hard. I can't say I know their feelings on the uniforms but if I had to hazard a guess.. they probably don't think that the uniforms make them any lesser. It's a shame that other people trivialize them as athletes because of it.

That stat doesn't surprise me - Men's fights often get bogged down in stalemates.

Carano wasn't as marketable. Everything else you've said is pretty spot on though. Rousey is more marketable because of her ability to make people love her or hate her. That's infinitely more marketable than a fighter that only has people that love them. Chael Sonnen and Floyd Mayweather can attest to that.

Apparently my hometown Saskatoon Valkyries are repeat champions of women's CFL or something (Canada, yes, but...still kind of America...ish)? I try and try and try to see their games on TV but I fucking can't.

So I think there are lots of problems with a women's NFL.

1) If there is one, people don't even know.
2) If they know, there's almost no way to even support it if you WANT to.
3) A lot of people just won't care very much (compare: WNBA).
4) Others will wonder why they aren't playing in their underwear, and will not hesitate to voice their displeasure at wearing actual football attire if the women are dressed like the men.

Lingerie football players don't even get a salary. They get a percentage of the gate sales (which vary depending on if they win or lose) and sometimes essentially end up making less than minimum wage per hour.

Maybe the discrepancy makes sense, yeah. Still a shame though.
