Assassin's Creed Unity - Review Thread

Yeah, definitely. I've always been weary of pre-orders to begin with. But this gen I've gone all digital. And I've loved that you can play games at 9pm (I'm west coast) the day before launch. So when they introduced pre-loading, it was this really cool thing. I got ahead of myself with this release though.

I learned my lesson to not do this again, only unless it's a trusted dev, or if there is some press stuff prior. But I'm not going to blindly do digital pre-loads again.

Yeah, I'm on the west coast too so I'm always tempted to pre-order stuff digitally, but I have to stop myself a lot of times especially when review embargoes end the day of release.

I pre-loaded the Master Chief Collection and if it weren't for the fact that I never played the campaign before, I would have been pretty pissed off last night to find that matchmaking was broken, especially when reviewers basically brushed that off.

I would have no issue pre-loading Dragon Age Inquisition for next week at least.

Non AAA games.

Some publishers have not quite been tainted in the same way as EA, Ubisoft, Activision, and Square-Enix. 2K and Warner Bros are still doing ok with the lack of bullshit paymium, with exception of 2K sports...talking more about 2K's other development studios. Mordor was a nice surprise for example.

I should have probably stated that better. I meant that as "Don't focus as much on AAA games." I know not all of them are bad. Just that its becoming a hell of a lot more prevalent.

i think you should watch the framerate videos of all three games, bayonetta 2 and W101 run much worse when you compare the overall package, it's really not even close.

Oh, you're THAT guy. I'll answer this anyway for everyone else: Yes, MCC comes not even close to the games ninjablade mentions, it runs A LOT worse, especially if you drive a Warthog in Halo:CE or play Halo 4 or try to turn 180° in Halo 2:A.

Where has the 'fun' gone with gaming these days?.

the wii u? it's over there in the bargain trash bin at your local games store looking up at everyone with hopeful puppy dog eyes whilst everyone pushes it aside to get a free bag of doritos with their Assassins creed pre-order.

I'm 32 now and have almost given up like you, the only thing i seem to enjoy now is first party nintendo software and a few big titles from naughty dog. There are still fun games out there, but it's getting increasingly hard to find them and the majority of customers want something else, this industry like all others is based on profit after all.

I'm just glad this game didn't release same-day in Europe. All this shit definitely makes me doubt a lot to pick this up. Absolutely loved Black Flag last year and was looking forward to more AC, but this is ridiculous.

Developers are treading on some mighty thin ice with releasing all these bug-ridden, unoptimized games lately. And now with free-to-play-level microtransactions. Absolutely disgusting.

Oh god yeah. I spent 4 hours last night trying to play Halo with friends. Servers were so bad. I was really mad. =/

Yeah Dragon Age looks amazing. And yeah, I have no issue either pre-loading based on the fact that they allowed the press to talk about it early, and that it's getting glowing impressions. Hopefully it's not an issue like Dragon Age 2, where a bunch of people in the press gave it high scores, but it was really awful. But everything I've seen about it + what I've read from reviews, is enough for me to take that risk and pre-load it.

Unity has just made me more cautious in general. Lessons learned though.

2K is part of Take Two which published GTA5.

As a 36yo gamer, i feel my time maybe coming to an end.
All this social shite and companion apps and stuff they cram into games these days really doesn't interest me and the less said about the spiraling trend of micro transactions, the better.

Where has the 'fun' gone with gaming these days?.

Get Shovel Knight. Seriously. That game is everything a game should be.

Well I was planning on pick this up from target for their B2G1. But I think I'm going to pass. Anyone have any suggestions? I have a PS4/3, and a Vita. All I know is that I want Advanced Warfare.

I wonder if Sony was aware of what's going on with this game and they were the ones to back out of marketing deal

I tried to open a treasure chest, but was told I needed the Assassin’s Creed companion app to open it, with no additional information or context.

I tried to open another treasure chest, and was told I needed to sign up for Assassin’s Creed Initiates to open it.

When I paused the game, the second option in the pause menu is an eStore that lets you spend real money on time-saving boosts, bonus in-game currency, and so-on.
What a fucking disaster AC:U is, it's almost overwhelming.

Just got back from cancelling my preorder. Sigh. The good news is GTA V and Dragon Age comes out next week, so I will finally try the Binding of Isaac to hold me over.

So how 'cinematic' is this game?

lol, game looks great. At least I think so. Lighting is amazing. Graphics are pretty darn good (hair looks terrible, and there are some things that look wonky. But it's impressive I think). But all of that is pointless if fps dips below 20 fps, and is choppy as you move around the city (which is like, a core gameplay to Assasin's Creed).

It's a shame, because I think the story is awesome so far. Cut scenes are great, the setting is great. I want to dive into the world, but it's hard to.

Exact same here, 28 and feel the industry has moved to a place that is just not for me anymore.
I'm 25 and that crap is a huge turn off for me as well. I'd actually be interested to know how many people genuinely like that kind of stuff.

Like you need to companion app to open certain chests in game. I can't imagine someone saying "Yes! I didn't even know this game had an app! Awesome!"

Same place it's been since back in the day. You're old enough to have matured past the "video games determine my manhood" phase and start appreciating gameplay mastery again, especially if you have a family to share it with.

Locked 30fps should be mandatory, looking at anything much less within a game has got to be bad for your eyesight. Sony/MS should force this. FPS in the OT thread is getting a fair amount of negative mentions too.

God this game's framerate is giving me a headache. I might just leave it for a few weeks and hope they release a patch that improves the performance.

Looks like Ubisoft's AssGreed strikes again.

Pushed out for holiday release, bugs galore & microtransaction dissatisfaction.

Vote with your wallet or get milked.

After reading a couple reviews I feel I've got my fill. Then I realized I don't think any of them touched on the music or even, at the very least, the sound design of the game whatsoever. I click through almost all the reviews, control f'ing "music", "sound", and "soundtrack" and I get nothing. Am I alone in hating this? Music is so so important to me.

For the Ubisoft open world template to fail, yes please. Next up Far Cry 4. Come back stronger with some cool innovations next time Ubisoft.

Played the game last night. It is not beautiful, it is glitchy as fuck. The models look meh, pop in is ridiculous as expected. The "compressed screenshots" were actually pretty damn accurate ingame. The AI is dumb as shit, combat is still a joke. Play the mobile app for chests? Wtf? Don't even get me started on the straw hair... At one point Elise's hair turned completely black and stayed like that... and I thought the whole accent thing wouldn't bother me since I never cared but some people have some kind if Scottish accents? It's like any accent is accent enough? The movement is janky as hell, I cannot walk through a room without climbing on every table...when I try and stealth with l2 and hit x for cover he clips through the closest table and covers on a different one than I intended. My wife kept asking why it was lagging and I had to explain framerates to her. I am disappointed in all of the Ubi defenders for making it sound like it was just the screenshots and streams. This game looks and plays like ass. I will still try and stomach beating it but this is even worse than my intial impression of three. And yes I still think Black Flag looked a lot better in a lot of ways other than the interior designs. When I look closely at Arno's face half of it is blurred in vaseline and his straw lego hair looks like its about to fall off. Anyone on the fence planning to get this because you love AC I strongly suggest preowned. Fuck this.

So from what I gather from these past few pages

- Money is really hard to come by, but you can find most of them in chests.

- But some chests are locked and require Assassin’s Creed companion app or Assassin’s Creed Initiates account to open.

- Other than in-game currency, you also have an option to use another currency (purchased by US dollars) to buy stuffs in the game.

This is ridiculous.

I did see mention in some places that there were no ambient night sound effects. Not sure about general soundtrack though.

Welcome to 90% of GI reviews. It's almost like they're connected to a store that wants to sell videogames or something.

Such a conflict of interest should not be allowed to be posted as an unbiased review then. Obviously I am not directing this at you, I just mean in general.

Hell I'm 28 and I've felt this way for a while now.

I'm someone who grew up in the glory days of gaming, the 16bit and 32bit eras (imo).
Games were magic and fun back then, developers seemed to try and make the best gameplay, the most fun games they could.
These days its more like creating gimmicks or creating a 'solid' game/franchise and flog it to death while injecting a load of extra shite that adds nothing to the game except new ways to rip off the customer.
I know gaming has always been a business and about money first and foremost but these days it seems to be much more industrialized and corporate.

Maybe i'm just having an off day but i long for that magic and fun experiences of those early generations.
I suppose a big part of it is development costs are much more these days so the kind of imagination developers had in those earlier gens is just not viable today as they have to stick to what sells the most millions.

Has any of the reviews even mentioned the microtransactions? I almost died when i heard the name someone gave this in another thread: Assassins's Greed: Currency..
