Assassin's Creed Unity - Review Thread

I think it's going to because there are fewer things to fuck up. Engine is the same as 4, the story is better as a Templar, the complete removal of eaves-dropping/tail missions, and improved ship-to-ship combat. It's probably going to at least get AC4-level reviews.

That sounds pretty cool actually. Might play in a year or so when my AC burnout had faded more...

This is most disappointing. I have never liked this series to be honest, I was expecting Unity to be different being engineered for the current hardware and what not..

For what I read it suffers for the usual AAA syndrome, incremental upgrades instead of substantial evolution. Same old dull gameplay, with better graphics and more NPC... you can cover shit with gold, will still smell like shit.

Good game design beats everything, when will they learn?

Even with dragons age racking up 9's there's no way I can trust that franchise again based on reviews only... I need to see the combat isn't just setting auto options and button mashing.

Yeah, that is a good point. BioWare in general has really really disappointed me. It's not just Mass Effect 3's writing. But their overall shift in how they make games (and what they focus on)....has left me really weary of them. It's been a shift happening over the past 5 years, and I haven't been a fan at all.

I'll just wait for GAF impressions and see if it has the things I'm specifically looking for. So good points.

There is a huge amount of hyperbole in this thread and I can guarantee you at least half of the people complaining have not tried the game. If you want to get blindly riled up, be my guest.

I should hope so, since trying it would mean actually paying money for a game with practices they do not approve of.

So we are supposed to buy a piece of shit, to confirm it's a piece of shit, when reviews mention it's a piece of shit?

Seriously, from the reported frame rates, bugs, glitches, resets, and microtransactions, from a variety of sources, Unity is a firm, nay, solid piece of shit.

Damn, you guys are really trying to hate this game. I've been playing for about two hours with only a minor framedrop in a big crowd. It could obviously use some polish, but it's perfectly playable so far. Money is also easy to come by with side missions and chests that are clearly marked on the map..

It is also pretty good looking, the lighting is great.

Anti-Ubisoft bias is at a fever pitch this year. Whatever issues this game may or may not have, it was never going to get a truly fair reception. People have been praying for this game to fail.

As for myself, I'll start playing it in a few hours and find out for myself if it really is even buggier than AC3 or if people who are butthurt over Watch Dogs' downgrade and AC Parity are just being hyperbolic.

Ha! I was right. I told one of my friends that Shadow of Mordor was/will be/is the Assassin's Creed game for this year and that Unity would disappoint when compared and he wasn't convinced.

Mhm... quite the surprise. Thought this would be 8s and 9s until caught wind of the performance issues today.

The microtransactions are incredibly disappointing and a worry trend moving forward.

I thought IV was the best in the series. I'll be giving this one a miss.

Seems to me that AC Rogue should have been cross-gen and released across ALL platforms THIS holiday with Unity getting another year of dev time to truly get it right.

Though with the microtransaction decisions, maybe they were never going to get it right.

But a microtransaction-less AC Rogue in my PS4 this holiday would have been really nice.

I promise you the sub 19 fps I saw multiple times in my own play through so far isn't hyperbole.

I don't get it. Try it? How? Share play?

Trying it means buying the game.

Ubisoft has not done a good job selling us on this game.

-The game is a PR disaster.
- We know there are performance issues
- Glitches
-Microtransactions out the ass

So no, I'm not saying the game is bad, I'm just saying that this purchase does not look to be worth my money.

It looks like the Metacritic score will come close to Watch Dogs which is mind boggling to me given all the issues with ACU.

ACU
X1 - 76
PS4 - 81

Watch Dogs
X1 - 78
PS4 - 80

Fuck this, I was so excited for this one. I guess I'll just get inFAMOUS with my PS4, then.

Lots of good games to substitute for AC besides inFamous (which is a great game btw).

Dragon Age Inquisition, Shadow of Mordor and GTA V are looking pretty sweet as my holiday games right about now. Far Cry might be gud too.

AC Rogue seems to be the AC game for this year, but you have to blow the dust off your old systems to play it for now.

I don't consider Mordor anything like AC personally other than some parkour. It's a fantastic game on its own.

In an ideal world they should of up-ported rogue and given unity another 6 months in the oven.

I think it would of been the better decision, even if rogue is nothing great they probably would of sold a couple of million on current gen just on the assassins creed name and holiday season time frame alone.

and then sell more of unity because of higher reviews.

Silly UBI bosses

I'm probably not the first to say this here but:

Thank [insert a deity here] for Shadow of Mordor.

Do you guys know about differences in frame-rate between One and PS4? On the One the framerate is really bad, is it the same thing on PS4? Some articles that mention both consoles?

btw, I'm not liking the performance as well, but god the hyperbole in this thread. GAF being GAF

I've been waiting for this game and I'm sad to see it have a bad reception. I thought about getting a refund but after 3 hours I have to admit that I still like it and I think it's better than AC3 and AC4 so far.

In Ubisoft they take this motto very seriously when they design this microtransactions BS...

Seems the series is finally getting scores it's deserved for a while now.

Is it getting the scores it deserves? It's at 81 right now. Better than Alien Isolation and better than Watch Dogs.

I think that Playstation Lifestyle perfect 100 score is pushing the PS4 version quite a bit higher than the XBO version.

Wow hearing of how this game runs and all the F2P shit that's littered in it, makes me wonder how the hell this game still pulled an 81 metacritic.

Hilarious, they have no shame.

It's pretty amusing to go through the first few pages of this thread and read how Ubi bought out the press and that the game will get 8s and 9s. Then the game gets panned pretty much disproving the conspiracy, but the same narrative will repeat itself for every big game release until the end of time.

So from what I gather from these past few pages

- Money is really hard to come by, but you can find most of them in chests.

- But some chests are locked and require Assassin’s Creed companion app or Assassin’s Creed Initiates account to open.

- Other than in-game currency, you also have an option to use another currency (purchased by US dollars) to buy stuffs in the game.

This is ridiculous.

Money is hard to come by? Pretty much everything I do gives me money.

I'm the only one here that likes this game :D

You're absolutely not. I don't know how long you've been on GAF, but whenever a high profile game gets nonstellar reviews, people love to jump in and shit all over it. It'll probably be like this for a few days before it settles down.

I don't mean to say that anyone in particular isn't justified in their hate. It sounds like the console versions are technical messes and the microtransaction stuff (while I haven't encountered it yet in my time with the game) is pretty indefensible.

It's actually sad to see gamers want a game to be bad. I don't even know if I have the mental aptitude required to make the leap into this dark side of gaming.

Disappointed in many gamers here.

Ubisoft is a piece of shit developer who lies to consumers about quality of games while choking them to death with a gluttony of social app/microtransaction/half-baked garbage. If game reviewers rolled over like they always did, nothing would change. It's good they're finally getting curbstomped for cutting corners.

I just played it for an hour and I am really disappointed. Not because of the game [it sure is the AC you love minus the ship battles], but technically it's a disgrace. It's low-fps all around on Xbox One and there's a constant stuttering going on.

This doesn't feel finished at all and sure needs a LOT more polish - they should have delayed it a few weeks. No harm in that.

At one point in the game [I was in a room in a house] it dropped to what I felt 10fps. And it lasted for a whole minute, before the engine got a hold of itself. Shame on you Ubi!

We need a thread talking about whether 2014 was the worst year of gaming. This, MCC, and Driveclub are just broken. Titanfall and Destiny were extremely overhyped and average games.

So many disappointments this year.
