Assassin's Creed Unity - Review Thread

Well I expected this game to be bad. But I didn't expect it to be quite this bad! The micro transactions in this sound horrific. Was planning on renting it but I don't think I'll even do that now.

Damn, I was actually really excited for this game, but everything I've seen of the it in the past week has just been awful.

They even managed to hit one of my biggest pet peeves in modern games: micro transactions in non-F2P games. It's a shame, really.

I'm glad the scores are "low". Ubisoft needs to get its act together. Looks like it could have been a fantastic game if they took the extra time or figured out their clusterfuck 10 studios made this nonsense.

Some publishers have not quite been tainted in the same way as EA, Ubisoft, Activision, and Square-Enix. 2K and Warner Bros are still doing ok with the lack of bullshit paymium, with exception of 2K sports...talking more about 2K's other development studios. Mordor was a nice surprise for example.

Deep sliver so have been pretty stellar to be honest, outside of online passes. The constant DLC is a bit annoying but its usually stuff you wouldnt miss.

And to be fair as much shit Capcom gets, the majority of their games only really offer cosmetic and easy to ignore DLC.

I tried to open a treasure chest, but was told I needed the Assassin’s Creed companion app to open it, with no additional information or context.

I tried to open another treasure chest, and was told I needed to sign up for Assassin’s Creed Initiates to open it.

When I paused the game, the second option in the pause menu is an eStore that lets you spend real money on time-saving boosts, bonus in-game currency, and so-on.

What a fucking disaster AC:U is, it's almost overwhelming.

It's hilarious.
Fucking garbage!

honestly surprised to see reviews criticizing what I always thought were AC's faults?
I actually thought this might be one that interests me again, because the setting looks awesome. but I am glad I can pick this up dirty cheap on a sale later, with draenor and inquisition coming up I need all the time I can get.

Damn, you guys are really trying to hate this game. I've been playing for about two hours with only a minor framedrop in a big crowd. It could obviously use some polish, but it's perfectly playable so far. Money is also easy to come by with side missions and chests that are clearly marked on the map..

It is also pretty good looking, the lighting is great.

I don't think I've ever been this happy to cancel a pre-order in a long, long time. Actually had a big joker-like grin on my face as I did it. Saw it coming a mile away after all the gaf impressions and videos floating around.

No one is "trying". It's easy to justify hating it, just because you can overlook it doesn't mean everyone else should.

Does anyone know what the embargo for Far Cry 4 is? That might determine whether or not I'll be canceling my pre-order.

For the record, that preorder only happened because there was a special offer on the Indian internet. Also I have a cold and it's making my head tired and stupid. That shall be my excuse. I don't usually pre-order, because it's dumb and no one should ever do it,

Just Kotaku from what I've seen. It's surprising given how some people say they're rather intrusive.

This is the first AC that I truly felt that they were in the way. When you go to a chest and it says you can't open it unless you play an app I think its time for you to rethink the direction you are going in. Then of course the app bombards you with microtransaction ads. In Black Flag I saw the microtransactions in the store but when I was playing the game nothing got in my way.

So from what I gather from these past few pages

- Money is really hard to come by, but you can find most of them in chests.

- But some chests are locked and require Assassin’s Creed companion app or Assassin’s Creed Initiates account to open.

- Other than in-game currency, you also have an option to use another currency (purchased by US dollars) to by stuffs in the game.

This is ridiculous.

So Ubisoft managed to create a pay to win single player experience.

Same place it's been since back in the day. You're old enough to have matured past the "video games determine my manhood" phase and start appreciating gameplay mastery again, especially if you have a family to share it with.

You mean the same platform who built it's online implementation over a social channel like Miiverse and has masked DLC in the form of cheap quality plastic figurines?

The whole "my console of choice is the best" just because an AAA game dosn't deliver is tyring. Consoles, luckily is not just AAA games, and slowly more and more delivering in other fronts (basically indie games).

I'm pretty glad when the XB1 bundle went on sale I took the time to track down the Sunset Overdrive one (SO is amazing, go buy it, seriously), instead of getting the AssCreed bundle which was in every store. At least based on these reviews. I still have the game already on the way from gamefly so hopefully it's worth a play-through at least.

That is all that matters. I really enjoyed the post patch Aliens Colonial Marines on PC. It doesn't matter to me the review scores or what GAF thinks of it.

hell yeah. I liked Duke Nukem Forever, ACIII, & FFXIII.

edit: i did get DN for $3, ACIII & FFXIII for $10 each. That helps.

I'm someone who grew up in the glory days of gaming, the 16bit and 32bit eras (imo).
Games were magic and fun back then, developers seemed to try and make the best gameplay, the most fun games they could.
These days its more like creating gimmicks or creating a 'solid' game/franchise and flog it to death while injecting a load of extra shite that adds nothing to the game except new ways to rip off the customer.
I know gaming has always been a business and about money first and foremost but these days it seems to be much more industrialized and corporate.

Maybe i'm just having an off day but i long for that magic and fun experiences of those early generations.
I suppose a big part of it is development costs are much more these days so the kind of imagination developers had in those earlier gens is just not viable today as they have to stick to what sells the most millions.

While i agree with most things, making games was way cheaper back then. Today we're talking about millions of dollars which these games cost to make, so publishers have to
make sure they their money get back. That being said: these microtransactions are just ridiculous in a $60 game

No one is "trying". It's easy to justify hating it, just because you can overlook it doesn't mean everyone else should.

There is a huge amount of hyperbole in this thread and I can guarantee you at least half of the people complaining have not tried the game. If you want to get blindly riled up, be my guest.

Im gonna laugh when Rogue pulls in a metacritic in the 80-90 range.

I think it's going to because there are fewer things to fuck up. Engine is the same as 4, the story is better as a Templar, the complete removal of eaves-dropping/tail missions, and improved ship-to-ship combat. It's probably going to at least get AC4-level reviews.

Oh god yeah. I spent 4 hours last night trying to play Halo with friends. Servers were so bad. I was really mad. =/

Yeah Dragon Age looks amazing. And yeah, I have no issue either pre-loading based on the fact that they allowed the press to talk about it early, and that it's getting glowing impressions. Hopefully it's not an issue like Dragon Age 2, where a bunch of people in the press gave it high scores, but it was really awful. But everything I've seen about it + what I've read from reviews, is enough for me to take that risk and pre-load it.

Unity has just made me more cautious in general. Lessons learned though.

Even with dragons age racking up 9's there's no way I can trust that franchise again based on reviews only... I need to see the combat isn't just setting auto options and button mashing.

You're damn right I haven't tried it, and by all the information I've gleaned in the lead-up to this game's release there's no way in hell I ever will be.

That's why reviews and pre-release articles are valuable when it comes to deciding where to spend your time and money and in what practices you want to endorse.

I always feel dirty at the thought of buying an Ubi game. They have great ideas but are always masked behind frame rate issues, bad execution, false marketing, micro-transactions and the need for the mundane. I guess when you have a 1000 people making one game you have to be as safe as humanly possible.
