Assassin's Creed Unity - Review Thread

As a 36yo gamer, i feel my time maybe coming to an end.
All this social shite and companion apps and stuff they cram into games these days really doesn't interest me and the less said about the spiraling trend of micro transactions, the better.

Where has the 'fun' gone with gaming these days?.

buy a Wii U.

Ubisoft will gladly answer your question for $50.

How the fuck can this happen ? Don't they have focus groups? Q&A ? How the fuck can the priorities of such a big franchise get all pear-shaped ? How can such a big studio be so out of sync with the audience ?
Being a developer myself, I know exactly how it can happen. The game is forced to commit to it's release cycle, executives don't give a shit about/don't know what frame rate is or any of the other technical stuff. They are forced to release the unfinished product, because money.

The enthusiast press rejecting even the most hyped releases this year makes me feel like we've all matured a little bit.

This year has been journalists actively taking a stand and I think that's wonderful.

If the frame rate is really as bad as people claim, I don't understand how reviewers can give it anything above a 6.

That's like buying a car, finding that the engine cuts in and out every couple minutes and still rating it highly. Makes absolutely zero sense.

Most of these reviews read like this is the worst Assassin's Creed game yet the reviewers still give the game a rather high score. Just goes to show that nice production values hide other blemishes.

The Kotaku review has text that matches the final verdict.

I know this feeling man. I feel like the industry is just ruining my favorite hobby.

I guess I'll have to find out by buying the dam thing. The internet told me to hate AC3 but I enjoyed the game, still is my favorite AC game. Hopefully the PC version is playable at launch.

Take a break. I hardly have time to play anything these days. Getting to play you know.. something is nice.

Indies.

Yeah, I covered the same problem at the end of our review.
The negative side is all the damn online account connections needed to fully enjoy the game. Here's an example: around the city there's different colored treasure chests appearing on your map. White chests are simple; find them and open them. Red chests require lockpicking. Blue chests require you to use the Assassin's Creed Unity Companion app - which is rather impressive and robust for an add-on experience - to access them. Finally, yellow chests need a valid AC Initiates account to open.

Most of my playthrough, the Initiates site was simply down. Even when it was up, I needed to download the Uplay app, log into Uplay, go back into the game, try to open the chest, load up Initiates in my web browser, create an Initiates account, and then hope the whole thing would sync up in-game. It was annoying juggling accounts and apps just to open a chest. Now that it's all hooked-up, it's not as trying, but starting the whole machine up seemed needlessly complex.
What a fucking joke.

DAT IMMERSION, eh? -_-

Assassin's Greed: Currency
Hahaha perfect.

Im really trying to no follow what reviews are saying but I read what kotaku thought of the game and I feel like this will be the first AC game that I will play and return as soon as I finish >.> I honestly try to not judge a game without fully playing it myself and even now Im slowly having slight doubts about how the game will play and deliver its story. I guess I'll find out once I get off work and piuck my copy up at GS.

Tried to get a refund from MS. They were really kind, and said it's very limited and rare that MS allows them to issue refunds for third party digital titles (like Battlefield 4, where it was really broken). They said I needed to contact Ubisoft.

It's okay though. I blame myself for pre-ordering this before reviews. It's the risk you as a consumer take by blindly buying pre-orders. I just got ahead of myself with this one (for reasons I've stated in past posts). But I'm not upset, and I can understand their position. Just figured I would try, so I get something else to enjoy on X1.

I got opposite feeling. Most reviewers liked game very much. Main complains are story and technical mess.

It's actually sad to see gamers want a game to be bad. I don't even know if I have the mental aptitude required to make the leap into this dark side of gaming.

Disappointed in many gamers here.

I don't want games to be bad, I want bad games to get bad reviews and sell poorly so they don't keep getting made.

As a 32 year old, there are more fun games out there in the world than ever before.

Just stay away from anything "AAA."

I hope ubisoft starts to rethink their bloated production line after the misfires this year. Having 10 studios working on each game is not leading to quality products.

I'm 33 and I know what you mean. But the 'fun' is still there. There's more out there than just 'AAA' (I hate that term so much, how about '$$$' instead?) games.

That's a shame to hear. Was worth a try though. I gotta say it's funny that they said you'd need to contact Ubisoft like they are the ones running the store. This is just one of the pitfalls of going all digital though sadly. It's just a lesson to learn for next time and really all future releases for any game in general.

I'm really interested to see what happens with Far Cry 4. We may see two technical disasters in one month.

i think Far Cry 4 will be a pallette swap of Far Cry 3. They're not making it out to be the second coming of Christ (THOUSANDS OF NPCS VISIBLE ON SCREEN AT THE SAME TIME!)

And that's a good thing.

To me it looks like Far Cry 3 in the Himalayas with the protagonist hopefully being less of an unlikeable dudebro.

A real shame, I thought this one would be different.

GotY looks like a toss up between Shadow of Mordor and Dragon Age at this point.

Kind of surprised by the reviews. I played about two hours last night on PC and came away feeling very positive about the game. Not that reviews are going to kill that positivity, but I'm just surprised to see it coming in so low at so many outlets.

Yeah, definitely. I've always been weary of pre-orders to begin with. But this gen I've gone all digital. And I've loved that you can play games at 9pm (I'm west coast) the day before launch. So when they introduced pre-loading, it was this really cool thing. I got ahead of myself with this release though.

I learned my lesson to not do this again, only unless it's a trusted dev, or if there is some press stuff prior. But I'm not going to blindly do digital pre-loads again.

It's on PC, where smaller games still shine. Lord of Xulima, MMX, Elite: Dangerous, Original Sin, Football Manager series and dozens of indie games. You really don't have to stick to AAA games. The magic is still here, you just have to find it :)

There are still plenty of good games out there.

Turds like this are easy to avoid and see coming.

Sounds like a good game hindered by performance issues and microtransactions.
