Sonic Boom |OT| Sonic 2014

A free Sonic Boom theme just appeared on my 3DS.

You know. In case you want to be reminded this happened every time you use your 3DS, or something.

EDIT: The theme's actually not terrible, but I love me some Hanafuda, so...
There should really be a "Shuffle" option for themes.

I think this is a great idea, less sense of entitlement from reviewers and they actually have to review the games they bought which means they can't just review genres they not interested in and they will give a more reliable review from a consumers point of view.

It's easy just do bash a game and not put any effort into if it's free.

wait ? there is theme song for this game too ?
i can't find it on youtube
all i can see is this

don't tell me this is real

LOL No. Sample of that were used in the very first trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpXY_V4nobU Too bad the game didn't look anywhere near this good.

I will admit, I'm enjoying the game. It's well above my very low expectations and surprisingly gets better further in. The adventure/exploration is well done and while there are some crazy glitches, it's nowhere near sonic '06 levels.
Or AC Unity from what I'm hearing.

Also, the game is loonnnng! There's 8 crystals to collect before defeating Lyric and I'm 4 hours in and only have two.

I dunno, Sonic Boom seems to be glitchier and run significantly worse than AC Unity.

Sonic 2006 obviously had technical problems in the form of loading screens but at least the game itself ran at 60 fps (mostly) on 360. Sonic Boom seems to range between 10-30 fps depending on the scene.

I really want this game to be good because I'm going to have to buy it for my son who is a Sonic nut.

Please tell me it's good or at least a lot of fun to play.

If he hasn't played them already, I say get him Sonic Generations, Sonic Colors, Sonic Rush, Sonic Rush Adventure, the Sonic Advance trilogy, or the old school Genesis Sonic games instead. Those were pretty good.

Thanks. We've got all those apart from Sonic Colors. We've also got Sonic: Lost World which was okay-ish.

"Mostly" is giving it a a heaping load of credit it doesn't deserve.

Sonic 2006 had massive technical problems, excessive loading was just a small portion of them.

Not as Silver though.... The drops when you stressed the physics engine were intense :P

Suuuuuure....
Couldn't resist :P

It's easy enough for kids to get into. If they get stuck, the characters remind them what to do next......constantly (To be fair, less and less so over time.)

Some kid on Miiverse played for 14 hours straight today and he's still not done. @_@

Just finished a boat level that plays a fair bit like Geometry wars including top down perspective, 3 different weapons on the boat and you shoot using the right analog stick. That's crazy that they'd introduce something like this 5 hours in, but it's pretty awesome.

You also get the reviews super-late. I can assure you, I would have played the game thoroughly, no matter if I got it for free, before reviewing it.

Yeah watching some of Cobanermani's gameplay, this really doesn't deserve the title of Sonic 2014, it's not polished, but that don't mean it's terrible.

I thought Cobi didn't like this game. At least that's what he conveyed on Twitter.

Not sure if it has been posted yet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPwXKHqdXDw

Day two and we have a first major sequence breaking exploit.

Maaaaaaaaaan! That might actually be fun to mess with.

Wow. That seems like a pretty important thing for them to miss. A pause exploit.

Edit: Oh wow I just got to the T-posed stand-ins.

It has so much potential though :D

If you like the stand-ins do search for civilians in TF2. It's the default pose for characters and for whatever reason there's always been a glitch to expose them and have a character that just slide around.

So after playing this for about 6hrs today i will say this game is a better game than lost world but lost world is a better sonic game. (if that makes any sense)

Haha oh my god. What on earth is going on?

Pausing seems to reset the variable that keeps track of whether or not knuckles is on the ground or in the air and the game, thinking he is on the ground, enables moon jumping. That's what it looks like at the very least.

In Sonic 06 there was an item that flat out enabled moon jump which tells you how broken that game was unless that was somehow intentional :P

The move can also be used in the air in normal gameplay. What happens when pausing and unpausing is that rather than putting Knuckles back in the "executing move" state he's put in the free fall state. In that state the player is free to input the move again, hence infinite moves and infinite ascension.

Screw Sonic, poor Cryengine being abused like this ;-;

And jeez, that has to be one of the most annoying way to glitch out. Such a horrible sound.

I think you're mis-remembering here. Yes, it definitely had pretty serious dips but the average frame-rate was still *MUCH MUCH* higher than Sonic Boom. The biggest issue with 2006 (performance wise) is the fact that it doesn't drop frames - it continues to display all frames even when the performance falls below its target resulting in slow motion.

Sonic Boom tops out at 30 fps and spends huge chunks of time below it and often in the teens. There are even moments of single digits. It's so much worse than Sonic 2006 in that regard.

Of course, the PS3 version of Sonic 2006 was a damn mess as it ran much slower than the 360 version. Still a higher average frame-rate than Sonic Boom. Heck, Bayonetta PS3 runs much better than Sonic Boom as does Assassin's Creed Unity.

okay the game itself doesn't seem too bad. Later sections seem more of the same as previous ones but difficulty increases

Technically though, it's a mess. Constant frame drops, glitches etc.. it also looks bad

I wonder if Big Red Button will survive this game. It's the first project they've put out and it turns out to be an unfinished mess. Would be kind of a shame, I thought the studio had some talent...

I will support them and buy this game today :)

Found my first glitch in this game. Last night I got to a room where, after a short fight, there was a section where Tails sends his robot helper through a hole in a force field to deactivate it. Unfortunately there were also lasers spinning around the room that would instantly kill the robot as soon as he got through. I asked on Miiverse how to do this but the only response I got was "it's a tile puzzle!"

Tried again this morning, no lasers appeared during the robot section. Turns out they aren't supposed to come on until another section on the other side of the room that is indeed a tile puzzle. Nice quality assurance, SEGA.

Also, it turns out one of my previous complaints isn't true. Someone on Miiverse said that Rings actually count towards a total that unlocks concept art and music on the main menu. This means they actually do have a point, but it still must be asked: why don't they tell you that Rings unlock this stuff, and why does it hide your real Ring total in a menu instead of putting it on the HUD?

Thanks. It sounds good. My kids will love it.

I've been playing it. ..and it's not awful. It's better than a lot of licensed kids games, it's just incredibly unpolished.
It must be DEATH WATER.

This game is odd...
Sonic and Tails collect this accessory that allows them to stand on water after activating it by passing a large blue ring.
After watching Gamegrumps play through sonic 06
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7AtQHXCW5s&list=PLRQGRBgN_Eno6hKuBDtqL9JBv5k5DRGd1&index=1

I've decided nothing can be as bad.
GG teased a Sonic Boom play through today, that should be fun

Why didn't they have a section, where he just runs on the water, like they can all do.

I don't know I felt like that device needing to be a thing feels silly

Did you guys know about the 100 max ring thing? Where a lot of the secret bonus areas give you rings you can't collect since you'll likely be maxed out?
Well you can unlock your ring count. ..if you buy the 3ds version
