Sonic Boom |OT| Sonic 2014

Alright, so I found a copy of the Wii U version at GameStop (one of two they had left... who else is buying this!?) and I'm about 2 hours in. Impressions:

• The framerate is painful. It manages to dip even when nothing is happening, and the running segments (the only Sonic-like parts of the game so far) are nearly ruined by it since you can barely tell what's going on most of the time.

• The Spin Dash is implemented really poorly. It moves you about 5 feet before it stops, but spamming it over and over is the only way for Sonic to go fast. Surely they could have just let you hold the button to use it.

• Character movement in general feels... stiff. There's not much in the way of momentum.

• Rings are totally useless since you can only collect 100, yet the game is littered with the things. If they're going to do this then why not just make Sonic invincible and be done with it? It's basically the same thing.

• Cutscenes aren't nearly as bad as I was expecting, they even got a few smirks out of me at times.

• Why are there so many combat upgrades when it all boils down to simplistic button mashing?

Overall, mediocre as expected, but the moniker of "Sonic 2014" is a bit hyperbolic. It's infinitely more playable than '06, and I'm actually having some fun with it. (Still selling it next month in time for Captain Toad tho.)

Huelen, you are giving me hope. Glad to see some positivity for these games. I really want them to be good.

Again, I will go more into detail soon, and I'm not claiming this game is amazing and the best thing ever, but I know that I'd be lying to myself if I were to say the game isn't enjoyable to me, and is bad. It's not for everyone, but it's not a broken alpha like 06 in any way, and only a liar could make such a claim with a straight face.

I will say Shattered Crystal (3DS) is the one you want to pick up. My main issue is that it is way short like NSMB.
I am about done and only logged 4 hours. Coins still needed, but should not take any more than 10 hours to do everything.

Regnerating rings will be nice in Wii U version though because I hate the combat so much.
I wish each character had boost like in the 3DS version...

Man, looking at this guys stream, did you feel that the levels were too long and kind of boring? The enemies also looks very generic and there isn't a nice variety.

SlySoul, what do all of the things you collect in Shattered Crystal do?

Exploring the demo level felt super tiresome by the end of it but I felt if I had context for why I wanted the items maybe itd be more engaging.

For each 6 of the gears you collect you get icons to help you find other items on the stage maps, and eventually some powerups like instant kill on enerbeam or boost and magnetized ring collecting.

Collecting all the crystals only gets you the greatest bonus in a video game ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJNgZymZX_M

The coins for beating challenges gets you toys, or like this game's version of Smash trophies. Even if you beat them all there's still some to collect, either through streetpass, or visiting Knuckles each day.

Was watching a stream. Full of amazing clipping and awful gameplay.

If you're strong, you can fly, you can reach the other side of the concrete!

Yep, you are right on the money. It also has a clunky narrative. It is "you got this thing, go explore this area now".
I would say the characters are fine, but they talk way too much. Overall it feels like Gex 2 + Jak II, but worse.

As the poster above me said things get much easier once you get 12 blueprints because you can keep the bottom screen on map and it shows you where the unlockables are located. It makes it where you can find everything within 1/2 runs. I would not worry about it and just play normally until 12 blueprints.
The demo did not have any unlockables so I can understand. The demo is pretty crap showing off the exploration levels.

do the crystals act as the games doodad to unlock levels or are they only needed to access 2014's most rewarding hidden ending.

My god, I really want to see the reviews lay the smackdown on this game. Sonic 06 may have been worse, but my god was it fun to watch people play it. This game seems to recycle the same shit over and over again in terms of gameplay with a few unique things in there.

It blows my mind that someone who speedruns Sonic 06 finds Rise of Lyric abysmal, and probably worse than that game.

Here we clip again!

This is the true mark of "Don't give a shit, we have to get it out the door," which is one of the key reasons why 2006 turned out the way it did. Not the only reason, but definitely contributing.

Edit: Copy-Pasted the better version from the other topic, but same point, better illustrated.

Actually it's two different cutscenes from the same boss battle. They clip through scenery in both. It's simply amazing. I think that gif pretty much sums up announcements for new Sonic games.

Okay, they should have just called this game Sonic Boom & Knuckles. He's like the best character ever in this one! This game man, this game...

You say mediocre yet it sounds horrific based on the words right above it...as expected.

The bar has been set so low for Sonic games. I don't think there's been a greater or more of a 'in-your-face' fall from glory in videogame history...still going strong, that Sonic.

Oh well.

Awkward and unappealing. Everything I've seen from these games can be described as awkward and unappealing. I don't mind the direction they went with Boom, but in many ways it seems both games miss the mark or don't quite get what they're going for. Which is baffling, and kinda sad, but at this point it is what it is.

I've been reading Cobanermani456's Twitter and it's really a bad sign when one of the biggest Sonic fans on Youtube who even loved Sonic Lost World also hates this game... :/
