Alright, so I found a copy of the Wii U version at GameStop (one of two they had left... who else is buying this!?) and I'm about 2 hours in. Impressions:
• The framerate is painful. It manages to dip even when nothing is happening, and the running segments (the only Sonic-like parts of the game so far) are nearly ruined by it since you can barely tell what's going on most of the time.
• The Spin Dash is implemented really poorly. It moves you about 5 feet before it stops, but spamming it over and over is the only way for Sonic to go fast. Surely they could have just let you hold the button to use it.
• Character movement in general feels... stiff. There's not much in the way of momentum.
• Rings are totally useless since you can only collect 100, yet the game is littered with the things. If they're going to do this then why not just make Sonic invincible and be done with it? It's basically the same thing.
• Cutscenes aren't nearly as bad as I was expecting, they even got a few smirks out of me at times.
• Why are there so many combat upgrades when it all boils down to simplistic button mashing?
Overall, mediocre as expected, but the moniker of "Sonic 2014" is a bit hyperbolic. It's infinitely more playable than '06, and I'm actually having some fun with it. (Still selling it next month in time for Captain Toad tho.)
