Sega very happy with Valkyria Chronicles' Steam launch

Stuff like this makes me really happy... I'm glad to see people putting their money where their mouth is. Hopefully it will show developers that exclusivity is pointless, and bring more games to PC. It's a serious audience that spends serious dough on their games, so there's no point in not catering to them.

Keep in mind that Japanese-made third-party exclusives generally aren't exclusive because they're being moneyhatted or anything like that, it's just that in Japan the audience for games that require something more powerful than a handheld, mobile device, or Nintendo console is pretty much exclusively on Playstation, and most niche/mid-tier Japanese games aren't really developed with international audiences in mind. That's the whole reason why Japanese console->PC ports tend to be such shitshows.

The success of this port (among others- I'd imagine FFXIII didn't do too bad either) on top of the ease of PS4/PC multiplat development compared to previous generations will hopefully get them to consider PCs a bit more when developing games.

Well deserved, porting it and doing it correctly was a good move. Playing this in high resolution with 120FPS is damn nice.

I would buy Vanquish on steam, its kind of game i could enjoy. SubHD console version in sub 30fps and on gamepad just wouldnt work for me.

"Sega followed up by burning English copies of Phastasy Star Online 2 and Panzer Dragoon Saga HD out of spite for it's fans"

Seeing Valkyria Chronicles top steam is glorious.

It's just awesome knowing that there's an audience out there who is savvy enough that they get excited for and support legitimately great games. There seems to be a great audience and solid desire for great Japanese games on PC, although predominately, great games simply seem to sell.

I think these could be some solid bets for Sega there:

- Yakuza Series
- Skies of Arcadia
- Phantasy Star Online 2
- Shining Force 3 (how awesome would a port of the entire SF3 trilogy be?)
- Dragon Force (they should just make a new one, PC gamers would eat it up)

Give PC gamers great games with depth, and you will be rewarded Sega. Excellent choice on bringing Valkyria over.

So part of the secret to sega's digital distribution strategy has been that they'vd been rereleasing their ps2 sega ages remakes. Nights, for example, was a sega ages remake even though it wasnt branded with sega ages when released on the ps2.

That said, sega already made a sega ages remake of dragon force. All they need to do is port and translate it.

I'll be buying this when I get some free time, all the wRPG's and DOTA are keeping me busy. Hopefully SEGA decides that Yakuza is worth porting over, if that series is going to get a second shot at life in the West it's going to come from the PC at this point.

Good. I don't have a particular interest in the game, but maybe this will lead to convincing Platinum to bring Vanquish to PC as well. I'm sure Sega isn't averse to doing that now.

I did not know that, but that is awesome. I wonder if they made a Sega Ages port of Dragon Force 2? Honestly, I really do think this game could be a home run on PC, it just feels like the natural platform for it. I think one minor hurdle might be the dated visuals, but then again, the PC audience might dig that aspect.

I'm glad Valkryia Chronicles is doing well on steam. I need to get around to playing it once I finish FFXIII on pc.

Sega, plz give Skies of Arcadia HD!

Actually I'll buy just about anything they port. I grew up with Sega consoles as a kid after all.

I didn't realize that. I'd love to see the Sega Ages version of the first Panzer Dragoon on Steam. Hell, they'd probably only need to translate some menu text.

They dont even need to do that, there is already a pc version of panzer dragoon that supports direct x.

Lets be honest, what we really need is Panzer Dragoon Saga (and a sequel) ;). I would love ports of PD 1,2, and Orta though. Orta especially would look awesome in HD.

If I wanted to buy it, where could I get it cheapest ? Steam itself or elsewhere ?

I was not interested on account of the artstyle, but reading so many good things and seeing Durante himself make an OP..it stirred some desire to try it out.

Looks like Green Man Gaming with coupon NOVEMB-ERGMGX-20XOFF

Its the gameplay that everyone raves about. As far as srpgs go, this is one of the easiest, but its so much fun to play. A super fresh take on the genre, to the degree that even action game fans should enjoy it.

Newsflash up in here. PC gamers are out in full force nowadays and Japanese publishers need to wake up to that fact. There's a glaring hole with certain types of console games that don't usually end up on PC, and the audience is clearly there. Bring on Vanquish and/or Bayonetta, I reckon those would be as successful as VC. Which I need to play more than I've had time for today!

Operation complete.

Now comes the wait for Platinum games, then Resonance of Fate and From Software works (ChromeHounds with reactivated servers!), Vocaloid, maybe the modern Shining titles for quick cash infusion, Xbox games we cannot emulate (Orta, Otogi, imagine if SEGA bought the license for Blinx, lol), and then SEGA AGES and Dreamcast stuff. It's been a great period for SoA and SoE, and now SoJ ought to see that, in the end, it has to be this way.

Yes
in Japan only
Then it wouldn't happen, because SEGA and other big Japanese publishers are extremely reluctant to sell their games to Japanese players through Steam. Which is dumb, too, since Steam even over there is the biggest digital-distribution client overall, and has good potential for growth should Valve and other companies play ball.

Now make next-gen Valkyria Chronicles 4.
Should PC sales exceed and make a greater profit than western and Japanese sales of the PS3 original, they could skip VC2 & 3 for the moment and make VC4 (still unsure how they can market 2 without upsetting a lot of people). A game set in Fhirald where you play as Radi Jaeger and former citizens turned militia, starting an insurrection against the Empire for independence? Count me in.

i hope this kicks off a strat/rpg fad. that would be good.
Codename S.T.E.A.M. isn't coming to PC, sadly (notice the irony), but I hope VC's sales can make way for ports of the Sakura Wars games that came before it, as well as more games like this from Japanese and western developers.

Sega is so clueless. Hopefully they're learning.
One part of SEGA's learning, just as another (Okunari and M2 for example) has. Meanwhile, the Shining team at SoJ keeps digging themselves into a hole of moe pandering, which I think is a waste of the recent games' battle systems that build on VC's mechanics. SEGA is not one monolith, it's a collection of different factions that have warred against one another since the mid-'80s.

But what I really really want Sega to understand is that Valkyria Chronicles is the best thing their internal development had going for the entirety of the past decade, and that they should give it another try.

And maybe, this time around, do not torpedo the franchise by focusing exclusively on Japan, putting it on a platform which is dead everywhere else, and trying to catch a ride on the monster hunter gravy train.
Hear hear. That the company can let this rot nearly to death and then perhaps revive the franchise in one blow is amazing, but they need to follow through appropriately. Focusing on PC sales in the West + Vita ports for Japanese gamers could do the trick.

Obviously the next step is Skies of Arcadia, guys.
It'd be a good exercise to show what the new porting team can do with older games. Porting the GC version with high-quality music + Steam goodies would work out nicely.

Otogi 1 & 2 is seriously what I really want on Steam. No BC with 360 so not a lot of people can even play it atm.
Both this and ChromeHounds would sell well because of the From Software connection, which might lead to ports of their other games like Armored Core.

Though some people are having crashing issues.
True indeed. I wouldn't call this port amazing so much as it gets the job done, performs well for most, and carries out the essentials without much issue. VC was never going to have tons of customizable options due to its art-style, so the port itself will seem workmanlike as a result.

- Shining Force 3 (how awesome would a port of the entire SF3 trilogy be?)
- Dragon Force (they should just make a new one, PC gamers would eat it up)
As long as Tony Taka and his merry men rule the Shining IP with an iron fist, the former will not happen. SFIII absolutely blows apart the more recent franchise games, and so they felt the best way to market Shining Ark was to attack foreign fans' videos and YouTube accounts in order to erase the best Shining from history. Which they failed to do, and now I wonder what the hell they were thinking. Because SoJ never apologizes for anything unless the entire global corporation is endangered (aka when the Saturn failed hard), getting the Shining team off its high horse is out of reach for now.

The latter just need to have the English translation inserted followed by a port to modern Windows OSes.

I'm not happy about Sega being happy (90's Nintendo fanboy) but I bought the game last week (and I had also bought the PS3 version when it was released, oh and the PSP VC2).

But dammit Sega, don't be happy because I give you money!

Glad to hear that it's selling well. Everyone who is experiencing it for the first time is in for a real treat. Now, how about that VC3, translated, on steam?

I like to hear something good out of Sega's camp. Hope it leads to some other stuff coming out too, like many others in here.

So I am guessing the game has already beat the PS3 versions revenue?
Apparently VC only sold 33k during its launch in the US?

Current Peak of COD AW players today - 28k

So thats ATLEAST 28k ppl who bought the game at 60$ a pop. If VC had made more money than this then it really did top the PS3 version.

I checked once and saw that it had 5k concurrents, which didn't strike me as that amazing, but I'm glad they think it's doing well.

It's not really a sit down and plow through kind of game, it's not even online, so why would concurrents matter? It's a game broken down into bite-sized missions that makes it easy to pick up and play. In retrospect, it's not all that surprising the series moved to a portable.

It doesn't matter, it's just tends to be an indicator of sales.

Nah it sold over 1,000,000 WW. That was just the initial launch. Word of mouth and such and a price cut got it some really good sales.
