Sega very happy with Valkyria Chronicles' Steam launch

I actually really liked the civil war idea in VC2 - it's the abysmal execution and anime school tropes that ruined the story for me.

This.

The core idea behind VC2 ( the military academy setting and how they got involved in the war ) was quite solid, imo.

But the weak execution for a large part of the story, and the school tropes didn't do it any favours.

Gunka no Baltzar should've been how VC2 was executed.

It would've helped a lot if Avan wasn't this hot headed hero stereotype. Yes, I can believe that he can hold himself well in battle and power through with the power of will. But I can not accept him as a military commander. His personality doesn't show any signs of elaborate thinking and ability to use tactics that go beyond "chaaarge". Obviously this influenced also a lot in the story.

Give me some chilled tactican Shiroe (Log Horizon), magnificent bastard like Sora (No Game no Life) or even a schemer like Lelouch (Code Geass). Somebody where I can see that he is indeed able to to lead a squad.

Eh, to be fair though, Zeri
was often times the brains of the operations.

VC2's core-cast, in many ways, were built on the notion of the basic premise where the core cast (Avan-Zeri-Cossette) made up for each other's strengths and flaws. Avan was supposed to be the 'heart' of the group, the rash, hot-headed hero who could move and touch the hearts of the team, Zeri as a calm-collected smart guy, and Collette as something like the glue.

It had some right ideas, but for a dynamic that focuses on the flaws of the team, and how misfits helps misfits, it didn't have the right 'spark.' It's pretty telling how none of the VC2 cast are remotely as memorable as their VC1/VC3 counterparts. Characters like Avan, Cossette and Zeri needs to be excellently written, or they come across as generic, boring templates that's there just to move the pieces of the story.

Eg. I would say Avan's biggest flaw as a character is that even though he's supposed to be the 'inspiring' person of the team, he comes across as largely idiotic. He's not able to invoke the feels necessary for someone in his role for the team, so it falls flat.

All three games have really great premises and ideas. But VC2 is probably the only one that really missed the mark. All 3 games do the 'rag tag squad' saves the day thing but I actually quite like it. In VC1 you play as the Militia which is looked down upon by the regular Army, in VC2 you play the reject and failure squad of Lanseal Academy, in VC3 you play as a penal squadron specializing in black operations.

If they wanted to just skip 2 entirely, and port VC3 instead I wouldn't question it at all. It would also make sense because VC3 runs parallel to VC1's story. Same war, but different side of the story.

And today at SEGA HQ, the forecasting team is evaluating every single one of the games that could be ported to STEAM.

How about you release it on Steam in Asia you miserable fucks.
I don't get this at all.

I can somehow understand it for new releases, given the price differential -- if I put myself in the shoes of an old and set-in-his-ways Japanese executive, but for this release? What exactly does a region lock for VC accomplish?

My only guess is they don't want to condition Asian customers to start to expect lower prices the way western gamers on Steam do nowadays.

Now Sega will release Beast Rider on Steam, be dissappointed with sales and stop these PC ports.

I'd buy it. The main reason I didn't enjoy it was the awful performance on PS3, despite that it was a lower end solid game with the potential of being high end solid if it had a little more polish. But then again I prefer THQ Conan to GoW so I might not be the one to ask about games being good from a mass appeal point of view.

I'd say even the first game has many things to learn from Gunka no Baltzar.

God, I would literally kill a man to get Steam versions of VC2 and 3.

2 had it's flaws but it was still a fun game. And dammit, I just want to play 3.

Honestly the best case scenario if they port the PSP games is that they do 3 first and drop the number which shortens it to Valkyria Chronicles: Unrecorded Chronicles.

Agreed.

Skies HD please.

Then after it sells like hotcakes, make Skies 2.

there will be no "this is really sucessful, maybe we can get a sequel now!" with steam ports...you guys DO realise that right?

They arent going to make a new VC because this sold well on steam. And by sold well, we dont even know what that means... 50k? 100k? if you think this did a million on steam all of a sudden youre out of your mind, and 100k copies of a old game wont finance a sequel

like This War of Mine is the current (or was at least) second best seller, and the dev was saying on steam theres like 1200 concurrent players...so lets say concurrent players doesnt indicate total sales of course, so lets say it did... 10 times that? lets say it did 12k, or even 20k. 20k and its the second top seller.

I mean its cool that these games are on top of the steam charts, but until we see numbers (which we wont) that doesnt mean anything. Im not downplaying Valkyria's success, hell I bought 3 of them, but sometimes it seems that people think the steam charts are like the NPDs or something

The magnificent bastard they should aim is Bruce Ashbey.

i'm kinda disappointed by the initial academy setting since I'm searching for something like LoGH (in term of military stuff like tactics etc). But then it could developed the supposedly-cliche setting and premise naturally into the realm of political struggle and war, it have been entertaining me so far.

Yeah it's not the setting or the premise but rather the weak, cliched execution.

Advanced Warfare is currently sitting at 8208 yen on Steam so I don't think that's the problem.

I don't know - the generous part of me wants to say they are busy qc'ing a proper Asia release with CJK support but it's probably wishful thinking. The page doesn't even exist, not even a "coming soon". I was stunned that the Final Fantasy 13 series made it.
