Microsoft: Xbox One leading sales in US since price cut, nearly 10 million sold-in

I'd be stunned if MS jacked the price back up in January.

I was under the impression this holiday season was used as an excuse for a stealth price drop.

I expect you to be the first to sign my petition if 2015 doesn't pan out for WWS.

lol. Well, I do know Shu appreciates your patience with getting that going...you are a man of your word. You promised to give him some of 2015 to get those first party titles released and get the ship on the right path....Shu is scrambling and I hear the PlayStation Experience will feature him in a panel discussion titled "Why I should keep my job." So he is laying the groundwork...

I'm still completely shocked that Sony has all but given up their competitive advantage.

Never would have expected that.
I suspect they don't want to lose a lot of money to keep it while they feel that winning worldwide is almost assured.

It's not like the PS4 bundle won't still move a ton of units. They just have a healthier competitor in this scenario.

So they lost in october again. It sounds like the nov 2nd week tripled the previous week. That week couldve sold 10k for all we know since the pricedrop was known already so people might've held back on buying xbones.

Dropping your prices just to maintain pricing leadership is very risky move.

Besides, the reality is that if you ignore the power difference, XB1 has been a better value console ever since they had a Forza 5 bundle at 399, yet that did nothing to quell the fact that a PS4 at 399 with no games sold better.

Because consumers at large value PS4s more. It's that simple.

Whether you argue intrinsic value or extrinsic value is of no significance. One console sells more than the other = consumers perceive value in one console more so than the other - the tyranny of majority that is.

They've gone a different route though. GTA V is still a system seller and bundling that with The Last of Us is going to make people think twice on what system they buy this Black Friday. MS just started early, but Sony did not give up on competing this holiday. They most likely just stuck with their timetable of promotion.

anyway, so... while we're here.

Where DOES GAF think the Xbox One will settle at the end of the year sold-through to consumers? What number are we looking for on December 31?

It'll be interesting to see how everything goes with the bundles the next 2 months that's for sure. I feel that overall Microsoft may take November or part of December at the least due to the overall Holiday lineup of Halo and Sunset +bundles. I'm not all that good at guessing with numbers so I tend to stay outta that stuff haha. Then again I am also buying my brother my PS4 as well for Christmas so you never know, gotta prep him for Bloodborne. :D

*a single tear rolls down his cheek*

typical bias mod. Where's your Sony hat now, bishop!?

The calculation I'm wondering about is just how feverish the purchasing for the systems are. It's possible they will sell most of what they ship to stores, in which case who wins would be whoever ships the most. But it's hard to say who has the most on shelves right now in anticipation of Black Friday

Jesus...

NPDs are tomorrow, right? Are all the insiders still banned/sourceless?

Doesn't surprise me. PS4 has been trouncing XBO, so Sony probably expects they throw in two games with PS4, and the preference people have toward the platform will make up most of the difference. And in doing that, they can churn out a higher profit, which Sony desperately needs.

I'm pretty sure their calculation is going to cost them at least November though, maybe December too.
Despite the reassurance of many on GAF that their friends only have Xbox One's it will be interesting to see how much the network effect from the PS4's higher install base will be able to hold up to the nicely priced Xbone bundles.

Doesn't seem like they did that yet though. What you can fault them for is not reinforcing it.

They had a pretty potent combo.

More powerful system for cheaper.

They still have the more powerful system, but it's no longer cheaper. That's giving up at least one facet of their competitive advantage.

And I do fault them for not maintaining it. Mainly because I figured you'd be able to get a PS4 for $299 this fall. And that would be perfect buying opportunity for me. Now MS is hovering around that price point.

I'll likely just wait it out, since PS4 is the way I want to game this gen, but that's more than a little disappointing to me personally.

They're in bad shape, they can't afford to bleed money just to compete in NPDs. Not to mention that they would be stupid to, they're doing great already.

Especially when NA matter so much less to Sony than it does to MS. I might be off, but MS could outsell the PS4 2 to 1 in NA for the rest of this gen and they'd still never catch up. People need to understand this.

Selling the PS4 with the 2 best games possible included is giving up your competitive advantage?

The Ps4 is bundled with freakin GTAV. That is going to sell like hotcskes for as long as it runs. And then it has The Last of Us for good measure . That's a damn fine deal.

Well their bundle does give you a $300 PS4 after bundled games are sold.

I agree. I sales are as strong throughout the holidays as I think they are, no way they go back up to $399.99.

As I mentioned earlier, they have effectively devalued the console in the eye of the consumer (or at least in the eye of the informed consumer). This isnt a mere "Black Friday bundle" or something like that. This is a multi-month $50 price cut with 1-2 games for free. Multiple month discount and free games. When 1/1/2015 rolls around, who would buy the Xbox One for $400 for none of that?

Sony on the other hand have a rumored GTAV bundle (which I am shocked they havent announced since that game comes out Tuesday) AND a Black Friday bundle of GTAV and the Last of Us Remastered for $400. Way less implicit harm going forward than what Microsoft has done. But hey, the past year has been the preseason for them so might as well go all out...

I think around around 9.5-10 million. Depends on deals made World wide.

PS4 will be over 18 million.

Wii U at somewhere around 9 million.

Yep the bundle will do well.

Never would have expected that.

They really haven't.
Microsoft had to kill Kinect for price parity and that did nothing.
So they are cutting deeper and it is not having the effect that they want, the hordes are not amassing.
Sony can calmly sit through this holiday and still sell everything on bundles and then in the slow season say..."Now we can drop the price"
Microsoft can not have that option.

Two very highly rated games. One sold over 30 million copies. The other sweeped game of the year awards left and right.
It's a very good deal but Sony IMO needs to bundle some other games with the console to offer consumers diversity. Would be cool if they could bundle 3 of the launch games with the console (Shadowfall, Infamous Second Son and Knack)

Hah!! Yeah, like that was going to happen.
It very well should have.

But I guess others are right that demolishing MS in their hometown was a happy accident to Sony, more than the firm gameplan.

I knew MS would have to drop One's price by June, which they did, but I figured Sony would not let price parity happen for more than a few months. When price parity and then undercutting said price wasn't having the effect MS wanted I started to waiver on that assertion, but still hoped.

Yup the main issue I see with their current bundle is that while both are great and big sellers, both are also games that sold big LAST YEAR.

But on the other hand MCC bundle is a ton of games from YEARS AGO. All bundles are filled with old games!!!! lol

I wouldn't say that Sony has all but given up their competitive advantage. They have some very attractive deals at Wal-Mart on the PS4 coming Black Friday. I would wager hard they are going to ride out the holiday season and possibly even Jan/Feb to see if the price drop on XB1 becomes a real threat to their dominance.

If XB1 begins to consistently outsell PS4, Sony will presumably price match at $350, but let's be honest--while Sony could afford to price drop $50, they would really rather not. The more profit they can squeeze out of the PS4, the better. The gaming division of Sony is doing well but the company as a whole, Kaz is still trying to steer out of troubled waters.

De-valued? If anything it increased the value proposition to me. Do you speak for all informed consumers?

Why would Sony drop there system by $100 when they selling at good speed.
Now is not the right time to play price drop card when they out selling them 2 to 1 WW.
Along with having a million lead in the US.

Microsoft can not have that option.

I like the way you think...

I originally felt they might roll the price back post-Holiday, but after thinking it through I totally agree with you. Jacking the price back up would essentially destroy any hype for the next price drop. Meanwhile, the same price drop for Sony would make a lot more news because it would be for the first time.

Microsoft needs momentum now more than anything, and the price drop is creating that. If they're playing the long game (which I feel like Phil Spencer is definitely doing), they will keep its current price point going forward.

If they were playing the long game, I would think they would drop the price worldwide instead of in just their single most competitive market.

Damn at the Major Nelson Twitter quote
Absolutely agreed. Sony may lose this holiday season because they're not being aggressive enough, giving MS some momentum. And a little momentum goes a long way.
Lose this holiday in the US or Workdwide?
Why lower the price of your product when the demand is so high? Sony will make more (lose less) at $400 than at $350 by reacting to Microsoft. Sony will probably still out sell the xbox 1 worldwide this holiday season.
