This actually sounds pretty incredible.
You can basically follow shows, watch them Live, and if you miss something or want to rewatch, it's available for 4 weeks, all on a good UI and on my PS4 and PS3?

Yeah. I'm as eager to get cable-like TV services over the Internet as anyone, but I doubt Sony will be the one to get us there. Perhaps the PlayStation Now pricing has made me a cynic.

And you'll still need an internet provider with a generous cap at least. How much is that going to cost without the corresponding cable or phone service?
Edit: just did a search for my local area and the minimum price for a 10mb down is $59.99 with a 250GB cap. If the service is more than $40 its not worth it. I pay $20 bucks more ($120 month)and I get 75 mb down and all the channels from Verizon Fios.

It's okay to have things other than games on a console, making it such a big part of a console reveal is what's going to get some ridicule/concern.
This is like PS Now. It'll come to ps tv eventually.

But it's not the same product, is it? Microsoft relies on Cable boxes. Microsoft dedicated their entire reveal to please the television industry.
They were not wrong and they had/have a vision but it was a wrong reveal. You don't announced a gaming-primary console and all you show is TV connectivity.

People are probably expecting this to be >$15. There's no fucking way. IMO It'll be at least $25 with an entry-level low memory cloud DVR (upgradeable for a fee) and that's without ESPN and Disney.

Sony need to be careful with this. These applications are great for Amercans, but if they don't at least try to push something similar in other countries then thy could turn on the brand like they did with the Xbox.

Welp I guess this is the end of logging into websites/services with your Cable/Sat subscription credentials and watching "free" on demand. Not really sure why any of the studios would continue supporting that when Sony's going to be giving them a big cut of a big sub for nothing but that. Also guess we know why PS4 has no media apps while Xbone has shit like Comedy Central, FX, Fox, CW, USA, Etc..

It was so clear even back then that it's absolutely shocking that so many people bought the whole #4TheGamers crap. One of the most successful gaming marketing campaigns ever IMO. Microsoft and Sony are competing in the same markets with a bit of variability in approach but just as we've seen PS+ and XBL begin to converge as services, we will see their roadmaps play out very similar.

Hopefully this IPTV service can also be viewed on a browser and on any smartphone or tablet. That portability would be a killer feature. And something that cable and satellite live-TV companies won't have.
If they limit this to only Playstations and other Sony devices and smartphones(like they did with Remote Play), its good as dead. And the stakes are too high.
The global pay-TV market is worth $280 billion a year. If Sony is able to successfully get even a minuscule fraction of that, that would be the holy grail.

New Zealander here, and it's just another service we'll never get. We're well aware that all doing an equivalent service overseas would mean jumping through countless licensing hoops.
I ain't even mad. Why cry over networks we couldn't get here anyway?

That is their plan. Starts with PS4 and PS3. Expands to Apple devices and subsequently Android and other devices.
The biggest hurdles are the price, the quality and market availability. I can see cable companies monopolizing on this as well. It may end up being US only service.

What are you talking about? Netflix is one of the biggest bandwidth users on the internet, spends billions on programming and manages to deliver unlimited HD streaming video for less than $10 a month.
The whole point of an over the top IPTV service is they aren't paying to shoot stuff into space or manage an enormous coaxial network allowing them to undercut traditional TV providers significantly. I could see this service coming in around $25/month. With no hidden equipment rental fees and the ability to watch the service with all cloud DVR features.
This is exactly the kind of disruption people have been predicting from Apple or Microsoft for a while. That Sony has managed to nail down the content contracts first to give them an enormous first mover advantage. Even without Disney or Time-Warner channels the opportunity to save $50-100 a month on your TV service could be very compelling to a lot of people. And the more subscribers Sony can get the better leverage they have to get those channels, too.

Sucks to see the Vita being snubbed again as the Ipad version will cone out first, even though this would be good for Playstation TV.

It's not a big deal yet, since Sony have enough focus on games to ensure ethe internatonal audience is happy. Xbox One's main issue is that it was -and still is- squarely focused on the american entertainment market at the expense of all others. I'm just hoping Sony don't invest TOO heavily in this compared to some of there more favourable policies (at least to me).

PlayStation more or less is Big Papa right now. They, along with the insurance business, are Sony's only profitable ventures at the moment. It's more like SCE is throwing a lifeline to Sony.

It's not about the cable box. It's about the extra $30-40 (because that's where I see the pricing for this coming in) they can get per Playstation user. And besides, there's no way they don't roll this out to PSTV, which is a $100 box at the moment. Hell, if this catches on in any real way, I can easily see them offering to give you a PSTV for free if you agree to pay for 6-12 months of the service.
Pretty sure a lot of their divisions (not mobile tho) were profitable according to their latest report, but I could be wrong

This blows my mind. I was under the impression that PS TV was intended as a roku alternative.

Let's not act like Sony and Microsoft are the same in terms of their place in the TV industry. Sony unveiling a real streaming service is only controversial on here because they're using the Playstation brand and hardware. Without that brand, this would be another product in the entertainment conglomerate that is Sony, so to say it's detracting from Playstation services or focus is missing the forest for the trees.
