For those that ended with a character they're happy with. Any general tips for using the creator?

I tried to get full lips on a female character once and they came out looking like a Neanderthal. Then I tried giving them pink-ish lips and the gloss shined through the sun itself. I know I can't make the perfect being (I think I understand that anyways), but everything just seems to be coming out rough.

easiest advice is that proportion and placement are what matters when determining what the face "looks" like, not the actual size of any one thing.

here's mine that I ended up going with and was very happy with:

if you want to change how the face "looks" think more about the size of things in relation to eachother and the space in between things. the various elements of the face can all be moved around to a degree, and that's extremely key.

if you're trying to make a "pretty" female face (which I think you might be since you said you tried making big shiny lips) pay attention a lot to the nose size and nose placement, and giant lips are also an easy trap to fall into. try to keep the mouth edges lined up with the pupils of the eyes or just a bit less wide than that. Oversized eyes are again an easy trap to fall into that make characters look odd. Don't worry so much about making the eyes bigger, but pay more attention to making them the right space apart. Often times it's easy to accidently end up with eyes too narrowly spaced, adding an odd look -- so try making them further apart.

What hair colors are there available?

Extremely limited, basic colors. No true black. The reds are either too much orange or too dark. Blondes look like yellow crayola.

lol.

Dragon's Dogma CC looks a DA:I and laughs.

Edit: you also have zero control over your character's body type.

Dragon's Dogma really was a great game in so many ways. God, I love it. I want a remastered version at bare minimum. X( Dragon's Dogma. God. Got so many things so fucking right.

anyway, in defense of DAI CC, it really is quite good when it comes to the face. The hair options and hair quality are terrible though, as everyone knows, and the lack of body customization is annoying.

Welp, limited hair colors and no body type customization? That's awful. I was looking to get the game mostly because of CC but if that's the case I will wait until it's deeply discounted.

Turn down or turn off lip shine. Actually, keep that in mind for most options. Subtle goes a long way. And maybe throw in some "imperfections" to give your inquisitor some character. Mine certainly couldn't be a model.

Like others have said, face shape is pretty important. Maybe find a shape you like on a basic character and change the other stuff. And don't go for the clearest complexion, it's okay to have some wrinkles or freckles.

I was trying out the CC for a female character and didn't realize the hair-styles were 90% the same for both men and women... like, yikes, I thought the selection was already pretty limited for men; having the exact same selection applied to women seems even more challenging. I guess the idea of making hairstyles equally available to both genders is good and even kind of progressive, but it'd be better if there were a wider selection in the first place.

I've been pretty happy with how my character has looked in-game and in cut-scenes, but as others have mentioned, the characters can look really different depending on the lighting and angle, and the particular expression the animators have chosen to give him/her at any moment. Like, sometimes I think my Inquisitor looks pretty good:

And then other moments he'll look like...

EDIT: Issues with the hair aside, I have to say the lighting and texture work for the characters in this game are gorgeous. There've already been a number of scenes where I was blown away by how the characters and atmosphere came to life - yeah, it doesn't always look like that (especially in-game), but when it does work it's pretty impressive.

hunk alert!

The lack of Dwarves in this thread is disappointing...

Undestandable though. I just made a dwarf female yesterday and while she looked pretty the propotions just killed it for me. Movement and anatomy reminds me so much of a midget. The only character I could play would be Tyrion Lannister.

Thanks, man! I'll keep this all in mind. I didn't assume that spacing was such a key, but it makes sense thinking about.

I will make mine look just like Einbroch-san.

Yeah, I seem to most desire one that isn't Barbie-material, but has certain unconventional features that are attractive to me such as heavy freckles and a larger forehead. Still attractive, just not "default" attractive, if that makes sense (though Yuel's Inquisitor is one of the exceptions here in that she looks commonly attractive but is different enough in her features to not come off bland).

The best advice I can give is:

- Lip gloss at minimum. It becomes excessively glowy very quickly.

- Makeup can look much darker in game vs the creator

- Eye separation and jawline are worth the time.

Yeah, I learned the lip gloss thing the hard way. On the makeup, I've never been very keen on matching makeup colors with hair color, eye color, etc. So I laid low on it for the most part. Wish I did though because I feel I'm missing out there. I tried to pretend I knew what I was doing with eye separation and jawline. I spread the eyes out a little more and made the jawline much softer (or tried to at least), as I prefer that on female characters.

NeoGAF, meet Daena:

She's a young, unexperienced Elf who feels like she's got a lot to prove. Hence the aggressive tattoo color and running around with swords twice her size ;)

Oh, this one's a little cutie!

Just snapped some quick pics with my phone, I was using a human first, but then rerolled to a male qunari. Spent about an hour making him. Of course he's a two handed Warrior. Had to make him menacing since he's a quanari.

Started playing on PS4 this Saturday. All the default faces for male elves and male humans are fucking horrible. This is the first time with a Bioware game that the default choices are so bad.

Can you remodel your appearance later on in the game with some magic brew? Or change gender/race altogether?

Because if not, I am seriously considering re-rolling a female. At least those look good.

Here's an elf I restarted with. I'm happy with him because he actually looks good in all angles in game unlike the previous characters I created who made derp faces every now and then:

thats a really cool looking elf. don't know if you messed with the Djole setting, but it looks super natural.

whoa, nice job! are you playing on PC? I can never get shots that look nearly that good.

Thanks! Indeed I am playing on PC (own the first two games on PC as well).

Damn she looks good. This game really needs facecodes. It was such a cool feature of Mass Effect.

so pretty...

Thank you as well! She took me about 60-90 minutes to complete. Really loved how she turned out especially since I'm roughly 30 hours into the game now.

And I agree face codes would have been awesome (I didn't take screenshots of the sliders sadly).

I appreciate the ethnic characters being made in this thread. I really tried, but I couldn't get one to look good. You guys did a lot better job than me.
