Hi everyone. My sister bought me a chromecast for my birthday on Friday. It's pretty cool but I'm having a problem figuring out how to cast Google Play Music on it. I've been able to successfully cast the YouTube app from my phone to my TV but no luck with Play Music.

Maybe I'm a dum-dum but I can't seem to find the cast button from within Play Music. Help!

Should look like this. Press the cast icon next to search:

The updated app has full integration with Chromecast. Just play a song, and you'll see the cast icon along with like/dislike on the thumbnail.

EDIT: Yep, that was it. After unplugging it a few times the chromecast was finally able to complete the update. Now the Cast button is showing on Play Music. Thanks everyone :)

Hmm. Thanks fellas. I'll double check to make sure I have the latest Play Music app. I did download the chromecast app on my phone also but I don't have that chromecast button on my phone screen.

I think that maybe it was because my Chromecast did not have the latest update? Just after I typed that message my chromecast went to a screen that says "Your Chromecast deserves the latest!"

However, it's been on that screen and stuck at 15% for about 5 minutes now. It doesn't seem like the device itself is frozen because the colored circle is still rotating but it won't get past 15%.

Such a bummer. I guess I'll head into the Chromecast OT and see if anyone has some suggestions.

Gotta say I'm loving the new session specific play lists. Works better than feeling llucky radio at the moment for my music moods.

Also glad the app plays nice with my dot matrix case as well.

I'm trying it right now because I got a 60 day trial and I'm liking it. It's a shame you can't do searches in a playlist and dragging songs is slow as fuck, but the rest is nice.

Is there a way to extend the number of songs in a generated 'radio station'? I find that it basically just generated a playlist and plays the same songs over and over.

Huh, I haven't heard a peep from them. Apparently people have been receiving email invites.
I got an email from Google last week that said
Starting next week, as a Google Play Music subscriber, you'll get free and complete access to the YouTube Music Key beta, a new service from YouTube (...)
Now if I go to http://www.youtube.com/musickey it says "You are invited" and if I go to "Manage subscriptions", among the channels "YouTube Music Key" appears on the list.

A bit of a long shot I suppose, but is anyone else in the East Coast-FIOS having terrible buffering problems in Chrome for the past few weeks?

I sign up for the beta every time I check to see if I'm invited.

I've now entered my email more than a couple times. Let's make this happen google!

Oh apparently I have Youtube Music Key. I was wondering why YouTube was allowing me to play music in the background all of a sudden. I thought it was just a regular YouTube app update. So yeah I still don't know what the appeal is of this thing. I guess I'll explore.

Also, Lollipop totally downgraded the the music controls on the lock screen. It's just pause and forward now. :/

Well it appears that most (every?) US-based subscriber of All Access has access to Music Key now.

Apparently you have to expand the notification to get some extra controls.

What exactly is it like? And how well does it integrate with Google Music?

I doubt I'd be interested in it if it was just a glorified music video playlist feature, which is what it sounds like. I really want to be able to pull Youtube videos (as audio tracks) in my Google library, so I can add music that wouldn't normally appear in Google Music (remixes etc) giving me all the music I could ever want in a central location.

With my short time with it, from Play Music's side you only get a button to show a video if one is available. The improvements are in Youtube though, you can download videos for offline view, background play, and new playlists like the Mood ones (which were recent additions in GPM as well) and "Google Play Music Recent Activity" which is what it says on the tin :P
I'll assume better integration will be coming eventually, as Music Key is a beta after all.

I really do love the new Songza stations, but they desperately need more variety. I can listen to the same channel for an hour or less and start hearing repeats. On the superhero channel, I think I've heard the main Batman theme four times in the past two hours.

Maybe that's Danny Elfman's fault. :p

So I see they added a "Play video" to songs in All Access (correlating with the YouTube music key, no doubt). It even looks like it plays it in the Music app, rather than taking you to the YouTube.

Pretty neat. I'm wondering if this will work over Chromecast. I could have tested it but I just now thought about it again and am going to bed.

Does this Music Key work with iOS7?

Yep. Just tried it on my iPhone and am playing a music video in the background. Doesn't work from the app, though. If you play from Safari it works.

I assume that will be fixed.

Videos in the Music app work on iOS as well.

It's always been like that if you watch a YT vid from safari and exited out.

I kinda love all the features/playlists from Google but man I really really hate having that stupid zoom and pan album art.
I miss being able to click on the artist's picture and go straight to their page.

I still don't get the point of Music Key when we already have All Access.

Music Key needs to be directly integrated with the Music app. Existing as separate entities right now only harms Music Key.

Oh, nevermind then!

The videos can be played from the music app now, so it is integrated. Unless that works for everyone.

Just played a song on my tablet while refreshing All Access on my PC and the song count didn't go up. It seems AA only ever records my play counts when I actually use the PC, which isn't great for me as I listen to most of my music on my phone.

Edit: Looks like it's not just me. (http://www.reddit.com/r/google/comments/1g74hi/)
That seems to be an specific bug though, I listen almost exclusively through my phone and the play counts, likes, etc do sync (definitely not automatically, but not sure of the frequency)

I'm on T-mobile. What's this Music Freedom thing?

As a recap, Music Freedom is T-Mobile’s free program that allows you to stream music from a variety of the most popular services without it counting against your data package. For example, if you have their 3GB Simple Choice plan, any music streamed from Google Play Music, won’t count against that 3GB. The same goes now for Xbox Music, Pandora, Spotify, iHeartRadio, iTunes Radio, etc.

The music is not "Free", but the streaming of it will not affect your metered data.

PSA: Weird Al's catalog is now available for All Access members. I don't have any idea when they started allowing streaming of it, but I just checked a two or three weeks ago and you still had to buy his music.

I had it on launch...Maybe they removed it and readded it?
