Is the New Nintendo 3DS the first console with full network share capability?

So, I got my New Nintendo 3DS XL today. Did a system transfer from my UK console, all went well. Decided to have a look at the new functions on the system menu. microSD Management? That's new. Let's try that.

(FBI SURVELLIANCE VAN is the SSID of my router network, if that wasn't obvious)

holy shit

My New Nintendo 3DS (well, the SD at least) is now a network storage device. I can transfer any file types back and forth, and I never have to remove the SD card again. I can even set the thing as a network drive!

Is this the first of its kind? I am kinda shocked at how good this is. I knew there would be a way to transfer files, but Nintendo never elaborated on it other than "yeah you can transfer music and photos across"

Wait... why is there a snes folder?

homebrew.

Can it take screenshots to the SD card? That would make an awesome combo.

yep.

I'm guessing stuff like the Pandora or hacked Raspberry Pi handhelds probably support FTP/Samba or a similar protocol. So I'm sure someone will be pedantic and say it isn't actually the first. But it's the first anyone cares about.

Well yeah, I mean first out of the big manufacturers (Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo)

That's indeed a very, very nice feature. I don't think any console has ever done that without homebrew.

Wait, the New 3DS is being sold already? US or just UK?

Australia/New Zealand launch was last friday. It's European region and works with all UK/EU games and accounts. That means UK people like me can import, which I did.

America is right now the only region in the world that has no choice but to wait until next year.

You can access purchased/stored media on an Xbox 360 HDD through your network and stream it to a PC.

Isn't that different though? That's streaming as a media device, not as a literal "hey, have the entire contents of this drive on your computer" option, isn't it?

Japan and Australia (PAL, so Europeans can import).

Ugh, I haven't been part of the Nintendo world for a while and completely forgot about the stupid region locking. I'm waiting on the release of the New 3DS to get back on the Nintendo train. I have a crazy Zelda craving that needs to be scratched.

I forgot about that as a feature, but don't really understand what it does... Would anyone be able to break it down for me quickly?

FBI surveillance van in the UK? haha

yeah, I had a far more explicit one before, but the neighbours complained

I'm not joking either, they really did. miserable bastards.

Well, that certainly beats having to remove the SD card from the system in order to access it.

considering you have to literally unscrew the back panel of the New Nintendo 3DS to do so, this feature is a godsend

According to some friends that have the Vita, no.

I've never had to plug my Vita onto my computer yet I can backup saves, transfer games back and fourth no worries to both my PC/Mac. Sure it needs an application on your computer but the functionality has still been there from day one.

What's stopping them from bringing this feature to the old 3DS'?

firstly, it's too underpowered I guess. also there's no need. this is purely because removing the micro SD card from the N3DS is an absolute pain in the ass.

you have to unscrew the back panel, and then literally snap it off. It felt like I was going to break it in half.

Keep your explicit one but dont broadcast thr ssid. My neighbor in austin used to not broadcast his ssid and named it "registered sex offender" so people wouldnt steal his internet beyond his normal security.
