Street Fighter 5 for PS4 & PC teaser trailer

Anyone that doesn't think Capcom would take free cash the instant its on the table is naive. Street Fighter fans would be willing to shell out money for a new console to play SFV, Sony and Capcom know this, they'll both win in this scenario. Capcom thinks there are enough casual fighting game fans on the PS4 to get plenty of sales, combine that with the cash Sony throws at them.

The amount of cash Sony offered is viewed as a better deal than having the game also be developed for the Xbone.

I agree but then that would fly in the face of the narrative that certain games wouldn't exist without outside funding. Maybe they would but Capcom made the decision to take the money from Sony instead. Is this somehow still noble and pro-consumer in comparison to, say, the tomb raider situation? Like Steve Youngblood was saying earlier nobody knows (or likely ever will know) the exact and full details so it amounts to a bunch of mental gymnastics that are usually done to support a preexisting bias or fit a narrative that someone wants to to true.

IV only helped Street Fighter. Then after that, just like after every new entry of a fighting game, a decline of players.

There was a lot more that contributed to the stability of the FGC besides SFIV. To credit it all to SFIV is kinda flawed

We're talking popularity here. Twitch and live streams of tournies shot it up, but you don't get there without SFIV. It absolutely matters.

This is also wrong. 3D fighters were doing fine and Guilty Gear started making its mark.

3D fighters are doing way better now and while I fucking love Guilty Gear, I can't credit it with any part of the renaissance.

How the F does PC get a port yet xbox one doesn't? That shit is just blowing my mind right now. Can't wait to see what capcom has in store for V. SF4 was one of my favorite games of last generation.

Sony payed for console exclusivity (which I'm assuming is cheaper)?

I have no horse in the exclusivity war race, I don't view this as noble or a evangelical gift from Sony, nor am I affected by the Tomb Raider stuff. I also don't view these deals as actions committed by demons. The reality of the deal is what it is, why that deal happened in the first place is interesting.

Even this post is proof that SF mostly helped Capcom more than anything. Also you're missing SNK.

EDIT: And all of these tangents aside how does that contribute to Street Fighter IV being a great fighting game? It just means that people recognized it and played it.

I never said it was great and the FGC pre-SFIV had an eighth of the numbers it pulls now for all games: Tekken, KoF, MK, SC, you name it. After SFIV the "09ers" came out in full force and the FGC has been steadily growing since whereas before SFIV fighting game numbers for ALL games were stagnant and low (comparatively).

"Notably, the newly released Street Fighter IV increased Evo attendance by a considerable margin, and the tournament for it alone boasted more 1000 participants, almost three times that of the tournaments for the other games"

SFIV brought interest to fighting games as a whole, there was a boom of entrants and interest after it was released.

Edit:

This is also wrong. 3D fighters were doing fine and Guilty Gear started making its mark.

I was mostly addressing the "SFIV just made Capcom/SF relevant again" comment when SF/Capcom was always relevant and among the highest entered games.

Edit 2: Yeah, I was wrong in the way I worded that, my mistake.

I wouldn't be surprised if next year every big fighting game franchise is on PC.

Would be worthless to them in the West and Japan is already a lost cause for them... not that they'd be able to get the series away from Nintendo anyways.

Just do it for the lols really. I would love to see a real Next Gen Monster Hunter. Game has been held by the PS2 gameplay shackles for years.

I think MS has plenty of good projects in the works and I don't see them sitting back and letting SF5 wash over them. Its probably timed in Japan anyway but SF5 is not going to sway me to buy a PS4 to play it. I suck at fighting games haha.

Street Fighter? I find it impossible to believe that Street Fighter was never coming out unless Sony saved it. Come on guys.

Uh, it was probably happening regardless, as a Capcom producer talked about it taking the company until 2018 for SFV. http://www.gamespot.com/articles/no-street-fighter-v-until-2018-capcom-producer/1100-6412556/

So if Sony stepped in to help fund it and get the game out earlier (probably 2016?) is that acceptable?

Yeah it's funny how people forget Tekken 5 and VF4. I mean, for 2D fighters things kinda did stagnate after CvS2 and until around SFIV. But 3D fighters kept it going big w/ those two.

And now it's the inverse; 2D fighters are big, 3D fighters have kind of waned. Namco could easily do a Tekken remaster w/ just the original cast up to 3. Like a Tekken Remix or something.

Cut down on all the extra crazy characters, play on nostalgia, remove some of the more obscure/obfuscating mechanics introduced in later games....there needs to be some kind of 3D fighter to ease players back into the scene as well as SFIV did (well, until you dug deeper into that game competitively, but that's the case with most fighters)

Have you seen MH4? It's seen the most gameplay additions of any the games and its on 3DS. The only way it's been shackled is in regards to graphics, but MH4 has the best animations of any of the Monster Hunter games.

So if Sony stepped in to help fund it and get the game out earlier (probably 2016?) is that acceptable?
Its not as bad, but it can also be bad for the game. There are very obvious things from the SF4 framework in that video that came out.

Sure, if you are ok with Sony paying to keep some people from playing the game.

Business is business. It is a good move for Sony. I just hope people that get mad at MS for this kind of thing do the same with Sony.

Tekken Revolution was supposed to be that, just didn't work out.

Reality is that some of people who own a specific console will want for it to flourish first and foremost. Whether the competition is getting the same thing doesn't mean shit. So I wouldn't worry if I was you, because it's just going to wear you out.

A few jump animations look great but its still MH underneath. The core is still old and it works. Most fans don't want major changes but I would love to see it nevertheless. MH could have way better animations if not for its hardware links.

Anyway, I have gone off topic. Sorry all!

Oh man what do you think guys should I break this down for him?
I don't think I have seen this question come up since the early Halo days.

Halo is Xbox exclusive, Xbox is a Microsoft's game console. Halo is also on PC which means Windows system, strangely it's also a OS by Microsoft. Obviously an Xbox only game would be better but having this on PC for them was not that bad.

Sony doesn't have Windows, so it makes less sense. Besides, like it was said, Street Fighter is one the most stable series of Capcom. They can really fund this game.

You were here around the time Rise of the planet of the apes tomb raider was announced to be a timed Xbone exclusive?

There was anger everywhere

I would love it if MS tries to retaliate by making MK X exclusive.

Its the 90s fighting-game wars all over again!

MK X already has a co-marketing agreement with Sony I think (they got the "exlcusive" reveal earlier this year (probably nothing major though). #rollseyes

The salt is amazing ... more than I expected tbh.

DR3 anyone?

Even more recently ROTR?

As much as I despise 3rd party exclusives, even temporary (there is 0 reasons for them, with the sole excpetion of "otherwise it wouldn't get made", which in 99% is imo a BS excuse to start with, cf ROTR), if MS is going to play that way, there is little room to complain about Sony going toe to toe and fighting fire with fire... Unfortunately.

I think they're talking about how there isn't a lot of anger with this announcement, but it's still too early since we don't have enough information about it since this was a leak and not even an official announcement.

Then you might want to watch the PSX stream tomorrow from the sound of things. :]

I never got into the Street Fighter games. I was always a Tekken and Soul Calibur fan growing up myself. Is this a franchise that you can be ok at rather quickly but takes a lot of time to be good at, or is there a steep learning curve from the start? I would be interested in getting back into fighting games again, so I will definitely keep my eyes on this.

Happy to have another reason to pick up a PS4 in the future, but third party exclusives are a downer - especially for anyone who cannot afford multiple consoles. A lot of people say that they should spend that money on their own first party games, and if the industry was just concerned with their audiences well being that would make sense. Sadly they probably gain much more in the short run spending that money on exclusivity instead of spending more ramping up one of their own studios for a new title.

This is a console war after all and while we benefit from some side-affects there are also some casualties. ; )

Reality is that some of people who own a specific console will want for it to flourish first and foremost. Whether the competition is getting the same thing doesn't mean shit. So I wouldn't worry yourself if I was you, because it's just going to wear you out.

Flourish? By limiting your user base?

Well we know MK X is coming and it was announced as a Multiplat.
We just found out SFV exists and they never mentioned any Platforms before that.

But what if someone really got a PS4 in expectation to play MK X which was announced as a Multiplat?
Just cause Microsoft doesn't want them to do a PS4 version after it was announced there was one some(majority of people this Gen) won't be able to play it.

In that scenario...
Microsoft would take away a game from players expecting it.
Sony isn't taking away SFV from X1 Gamers cause we never knew it would come for the Xbox One.
But hey if Microsoft wants to go that step then have fun - This is nothing but bad PR for them in a scenario where they would do that...for any game that was announced as a Multiplat.

this could be another hoax like the SF cabs video or whatever.

itll be funny if its a hoax and people are outed..funny everyone posting videos about it would be the last person to play the game but they feel the need to post a "How i feel today" video about it

I think they're talking about how there isn't a lot of anger with this announcement, but it's still too early since we don't have enough information about it since this was a leak and not even an official announcement.

My guess is this is an actual console exclusive. Considering capcom is known to do those. Example: Dead Rising 3 and Deep Down (what happened to that game?)

But yeah, people are taking this news a lot better than the tomb raider news.

Big difference, was that Rise of the Tomb Raider was a multiplatform game from the get-go before MS secured it as a timed exclusive.

Street Fighter V is different.

Flourish? By limiting your user base?

What? Did you understand what I said? The person who owns a PS4 is not losing out on anything here. I said some people only care about getting the most they can, not about whether the competing console is getting the same game.
