And people have seen that for years and years. It might be new to Nintendo to have this huge open world to traverse but it's not novel in games anymore. If Rockstar revealed the next GTA like this, just the Houser brothers sitting on a couch with some offscreen footage driving around a city, getting out, shooting a couple of guys, and then driving some more, they'd catch just as much shit. It will probably be a great game, but that was a shitty way to show it off. I think that's all most people are saying.

Perfect explanation.

Oh. Look at it, an in-game clock. It`s 7pm in Hyrule.

I wonder if the time is just there for development purposes (it's quite obvious that they haven't worked on the proper UI yet) or if time will play an important role in the new game. Other Zelda games had day/night cycles, but outside of Majora's Mask they never had a proper clock on screen, since it wasn't important to the gameplay.

The time was SUNSET (19:00) and it was SUNSET in the game.

It corresponds with the game clock.

It coincides with Miyamoto's comments a few months ago.

People want to see real gameplay of games in development, then bitch about what games look like when they are in development. This is why we only ever get CG trailers.

This! This game is still in development and as I know Nintendo games look far better when they get released, and to judge a game in this stage in development makes no sense to me, especially no one played it yet!

You're going to get knee-jerk posts on both sides. I doubt anybody here is going to make a definitive buying decision based on what they saw tonight, which is what matters.

I just want logical discussion. But then again, I need to remember where I am...

3D Zelda going open world is a pretty fucking big deal, even if it's not revelatory for gaming in general. It's not something the series had to do, and people seemed to be pretty psyched about it after the E3 reveal.

Are people going to constantly say, "Pfft. We've seen this already!" every single time Nintendo focuses on the game's open world design? Because that's going to get really irritating.

As great as it is that Zelda is finally turning into what looks like a proper open world game. It doesn't look like it will release any time soon based off that footage, it's looks very early imo.

Lifeless? Like what the fuck are some of you talking about? Because when I go for a walk in a field or the woods I have to dodge animals because you know, they are fucking all over the place.

Obviously the demo was to illustrate the openness of the game. They gave a brief tease of an area populated by enemies. There is much more to come.

Jesus GAF, overreact much?

Exactly. Also because just like Reggie said, people was always questioning him about the new Zelda so he actually listened to fans and he bring Miyamoto and Aonuma together to show Zelda U footage wich is super awesome and unexpected IMO. This footage was shown just to indicate how big the world in Zelda U will be. Later on (In a Nintendo Direct for example) they will properly show other stuff like gameplay combat, new enemies, new dungeons, and an actual title of this game! HNNNNNNNGHHHH <3

Also, STARFOX!!

Hot damn, between the new Zelda trailer and the Koji Kondo concert, that blew away my expectations. We're starting to see what Aonuma meant when he said the new game is about figuring out how to get places; it's a really refreshing direction for the series. We'll have to how the traversal works, but this was a good first impression. And the art style, wow.

Best part, they're setting expectations that this will be 2015. They wouldn't do that if they weren't far enough along. Dammit, why are we still in 2014?!

Honestly I think it looked pretty amazing all things considered. So many big games being announced. Tomorrow is going to be a supernova on GAF

Looks incredible, the art style and the colours are so nice!.

The point of this video was to show off the open world, hence the wide open areas. We all know there will be plenty of dungeons and towns etc.

I'm very happy to see wide open areas like that, especially if there are going to be dynamic enemy encounters like shown at E3.

I'm assuming they hid major landmarks/cities/Hyrule Castle in that huge zoomed out overworld map to avoid spoiling it all. I would guess that the Castle town would go in the center with those rivers surrounding it?

I'll wait for direct feed but from what I saw the graphics did not look that great. Texture work on the ground was just bad and the distance lod when they zoomed in was oblivion bad. This all could change later in development but I don't understand why they chose to show it now like that.

i have a hard time believing this will hit next year but if it does then 2015 will be an amazing year full of games

Environment up close didn't look particularly great, and I'm not terribly crazy about the more indirect control of Epona.

Gorgeous game overall though, and I'm looking forward to seeing if they can pull off this world. Map size is impressive, but I just hope it's not all big and empty.

I would actually love the Housers to sit down and explain how their new GTA plays because all of those games control like total shit.

I should note that I'm very impressed with the scale. The world does look a bit empty but I'm fine with that.

Looks so good. The art style is just perfect. I really hope they don't over-tutorialize and such like they did with Skyward Sword. The tone of that game was just off. I have faith. And it sounds like this may be the Star Fox that brings me back, based on podcasts around E3 time. I'll be purchasing one Wii U next year.

All I know is that they focused on showing me big empty landscapes that I've played a thousand times before in other open world sandbox fantasy games.

So this didn't win me over. But I won't jump to conclusions.

There's a red stream on the upper right, that's probably where Death Mountain is.

Zelda should not be open world anyways, it should be big enough so there is a sense of adventure an scale, but small so there are actually interesting things to do.

I share the empty world concern, though I do think there will be plenty of enemies to harass you at the very least, but there does need to be purpose and such of course. But having played A Link Between Worlds, which I consider the best Zelda since MM, I have some renewed faith in the franchise. If they continue on those design philosophies I think they will turn this into something incredible.

And that's the problem. Zelda shouldn't be open world IMO. It completely goes against what I like about the series.

This seems like it's going back to what Zelda used to be about: a fucking adventure where you explore shit and come across dungeons. Down-time included.

Not some puzzle-puzzle-puzzle-puzzle fest.

From everything we've seen, I think it's safe to say that this is the closest Nintendo have got to making a 3D Zelda that is faithful to the design ethos of Zelda 1.

1 and 2, yes. It's really starting to feel like a 3D re-imagining of those titles. And for people like me who cherish those Zeldas the most, nothing could be better.

You can tell it has a lot of polishing to come, because the gyro camera controls looked like shit

Every implementation on release has looked far, far better

I don't think it's necessarily impossible for it to hit 2015. I mean, remember what they showed might not necessarily be the most current build, maybe it was just the most stable for what they wanted to show.

The very first Zelda on NES was technically open world... :I

It's also one of the worst games in the series IMO. For me the Zelda series didn't get really good until 2.

I mean it's still a lot of fun, and I think everyone should try and play through it at least once, but when I want a Zelda experience it's not a game I go to.

I think it's added just to ensure that you could set Epona to run across the massive world with little to no actual input needed similar to sailing in Wind Waker.

So was the sequel...

honestly almost all of them have had a lot of open world elements in them, it is up to Nintendo to make sure that the little things that make Zelda, Zelda are in there along side the massive world

Let me be one of five people to mourn the loss of motion+ controls and combat

Maybe they'll take the combat in a different direction, but I have a feeling that we're just going right back to button mashing. Slo-mo horse hopping is totally not a thing that will feel ridiculous after the third or fourth try.

Hurray for next gen evolution :(
