Legend of Zelda Wii U Gameplay Demo

I might be imagining things but I can almost see the outlines of a white castle in the distance, a bit above the white chimney looking thing closets to Link.

yeah, I'm pretty sure that's Hyrule Castle. The location fits, with Death Mountain to the right

Just woke up to this. Me:

Also notice that there is an island here. And the distance is quite large (probably the same as the distance traveled in the demo).

Maybe there are ships or boats for travel?

there's a lot more going on in the screenshot compared to what we saw in the demo - people working in the fields, herding animals, houses, different types of trees, the terrain has more elevation

also, the lightning are colors are much nicer, but that was probably due to the off-screen footage
And different kind of trees too xP

Motion aiming sucked. Wii u pad was also just a map. Hopefully they let you play with the pro controller.

Game looked good, but was surprisingly lifeless considering how crazy the first footage was.

So a WiiU for 2015 it is then. Well played, Nintendo.

OK, I know it's still under development, but this looked really underwhelming.

The textures are bad and Link's robotic animation seems like a straight copy-pasta from Twilight Princess.

My biggest complaint, though, is with the incredibly boring environmental design. Just like with Skyward Sword, the world looks utterly lifeless, flat and bland.

Are you sure you know what flat means?

Like others have said im really confused at the downgrade, original clip showed random rocks, high detailed pine trees

Did they purposely show a bland area?

That hasn't changed. The first video still represents what we can see in the game and Aonuma has talked about it a couple of times in interviews throughout this year. They were just showcasing the expansive world without delving into all that other stuff. E3 will have the big stuff obviously.

It's amazing how much performance Nintendo manage to squeeze out of their hardware compared to other devs on WiiU. Quite the contrast.

Yep, much bigger distance than between Link and the Tower. Theres no way you have to reach the island swimming lol

The game looks like it has potential, but the part that was most enjoyable in the video for me was the hilarious dubbing :D
The banter between them sound so real and enthusiastic!
I just found it very funny, in a good way, I mean no harm :)

I do like the fact that the horse avoids stuff on its own (it can be quite weird if your hourses starts rebounding off trees in games).

But I still have trouble seeing where this is lighting people's fire beyond its franchise association. They have shown too little of real combat, dungeons, or even the story to excite me... In fact the whole open world stuff so far seems similar to so many other open world game mechanics, just with zelda aesethetics.... but then again I have not really enjoyed the base zelda gameplay since about zelda 2 or so. I am not the best judge.

Nintendo are always very conservative about how they show content for upcoming games. It's still around 1 year from release at least - they have plenty of time to show content - why do they need to show it now?.
In terms of dungeons, combat, and story I already have an idea of what to expect - it's still a Zelda game but I'm sure there'll be some new mechanics among these components (like we have already seen with the slow mow 'jump of horse' bow thing).

The big change for Zelda U based on what we know so far is the more open world and the ability play through the game 'out of order' and progress in any direction. The purpose of the demonstration, I feel, was just to prove that the world really is large and very open, because I think up until now it wasn't very clear exactly how open the world was. They are intentionally holding back on showing content.

There's still much we don't know about how things will play out 'moment to moment' in the open world but I still find this quote from Aonuma interesting:

“Since we’re talking about open worlds, let’s state upfront that we don’t plan to have an open world in the same way other companies have been doing in recent years. “ - Aonuma, EDGE Magazine Aug 2014

Nah, really? :P I thought the dub was pretty cringe-worthy, haha. But I suppose that's just me. I'd much rather had them just talking Japanese with English subtitles (since I assume the footage wasn't live to begin with).

It is a straight copy-pasta from Twilight Princess - Link's right-handed in the video.

We'll get the big trailer everyone is clamoring for at E3 that showcases far more things then they could fit in a little demo. And it will be exciting like any other Zelda trailer.

Animations are amazing

Are they?

Epona's animations seem okay, but at 3:13 they mess up when they hit an invisible wall. The jump-spin-shoot manoeuvre looks janky. And the on foot movement looks really similar to Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, but it doesn't seem to blend well with the more uneven terrain Zelda U has. The horse that gets startled also resets its animation just before it leaves the screen.

I'm not seeing amazing animations. The grass is beautiful, though.

But if we only had subtitles that wouldn't be half as entertaining :D

On one hand, it looks gorgeous. On the other hand, we didn't see too much in that overworld. I did really like the very dense level design of tSkyward Sword, its a shametthts gone.

The trees really don't look like they were placed by an artist. There's no indication of the
roots, or the soil surrounding the base of the tree, they all just look generated.

I feel like the game would show better during a different time of day.

Actually, are we sure the darker parts of the map is actual traversal-able terrain? The way it looks, it makes me think Link will have to go around that trench to get to the top left of the map.

The parts we just saw were obviously in a different area to the E3 showing, the footage was off screen, hiding a lot of details, and the game is still in development, and to those that say it looks lifeless, it had more life in that little snippet than the entirety of TP's Hyrule field did, maybe there aren't humans in the fields that they explored, maybe human life is just starting to fill Hyrule out in the game, there certainly is wildlife, and I'm sure there'll be more in the game when it comes out.

The Great sea in Wind Waker had Sharks, Seagulls and Giant Octorocks, as well as Bokoblin lookouts you could raid in between the islands, oh and the random boats that try to blow you up.

This already has humans, goats, insects, wild horses, bokoblins and a giant mechanical Octorock thing, it has apples that grow on trees, and many different looking trees at that, and the terrain changes as well, grass, moss, rivers and rocks so far, can't wait to see Death Mountain, the sea and snowy areas as well as the lakes. I just noticed at the beginning there's a flag and a tower where Link is as well as the one they choose to go to in the distance.

Watching it made me want to go and explore the Sussex Downs, which I'm going to do right after I've posted this.

I disliked how the overworlds in Skyward Sword were just dungeons in disguise; it all looked planned out and fake. I wanted to explore Hyrule, not a locked theme park.

It doesn't matter why. It just matters that it is.

Hopefully it will change, but the world looks empty in this footage, IMO.

Lots of empty meaningless terrain. :/
I know right? This is awesome. Just like in real life. Not every single tiny spot has to have a "meaning". No, scratch that, a huge terrain where nothing happens actually HAS a meaning. It gives you the urge to explore and the feeling that you are in a real place, not made by some developer who tries to keep gamers "busy" all the time because some have short attention spans.

It also reminds me of Shadow of Colossus a bit, so that's good.

I hope it's traversalable terrain. There's a lot of dark brown areas especially around the center of the map, as well as the crescent moon isle. Don't you take crescent moon isle away from me :C
