Say goodbye to your little amiibo friends........

Why should Nintendo continue to make Amiibos that nobody is buying? And they are just gonna waste retail space

If you want those Amiibos so bad why dont you buy them while they are still available sitting on retail shelves or online

I dont see the issue here

Just pre ordered Diddy, Luigi, shulk, meta knight, rosalina, Ike, toon link and mega man. That's a few of the rare ones for each wave.

I can understand if they phase out some of the less popular characters after a few months but not after 1 or 2 shipments. Poor from Nintendo.

never saw a village or marth on a shelf to begin with.

whete? I definitely don't see shill or rosalina on Amazon.ca

I said it in the other thread, and I'll say it here:

Welcome to figure collecting. That's how it has been and how it always will be.

Makes sense. Part of the continuing popularity is creating a demand, and sense of exclusivity. It completely sucks for me, haha. But I totally get why they would do this.

So if future Nintendo games are assumed to have some form of Amiibo support, and if a handful of Amiibos wont be sold after their initial printing sells out, are those "limited" figures still expected to be supported across the board? Why should Nintendo bother including functionality for semi-obscure characters that aren't available to purchase anymore 2, 3 years into this thing?

Nintendo should start thinking opening Nintendo stores around the world with exclusive distribution of the full amiibo lineup, demos of their games, etc.

a year ago, if you told gaf "nintendo will release a wii fit trainer toy and demand will drastically outstrip supply," many people would have said that it was impossible

Keeping stock on an online store is not impossible, and they could have proven more flexible with demand.

Seems like people are buying them.

I'm not playing the "buy it on day one or you'll never, ever be able to find it" game. If Nintendo can't guarantee that I have at least a few months from the launch of each figure line to find and buy every figure I want, then I'm not going to bother.

If Nintendo is unable to sell some of the less popular characters to retailers, they need to start offering their customers the option to purchase Amiibo figures from them directly.

Kinda horseshit. And I guess (hope?) this means they'll never hide anything significant to unlock behind the limited ones.

You're too slow

Gotta be there day 1, front of the line, when the stores open up
Only serious collectors and lucky consumers get Marth lol

Kind of weird for Villager to be discontinued given the success of the Animal Crossing series. I guess Nintendo doesn't think the popularity of the franchise means an affinity for the character...or its a different target market. I don't know.

I was holding a WFT amiibo in hand the other day, and thought about buying, knowing the situation, but I just can't bring myself to buy one. It looks cool, but I just don't care about the character beyond its novelty in Smash. At least my other nine amiibo each represent a character I really love.

Can't say I care about amiibos. This actually makes me happy since chances are amiibos will not have any big/meaningful function in future games. I hope.

9 out of the 12 are still readily available on every online store.
Many retail locations are regularly getting cleaned out of them (last time i entered a store in person, they had 3 peaches and 1 kirby)
preorders for the next 6 sold out most places already.
Every time a scalper successfully sells people a figure at a 500% markup they tell Nintendo that some people really, really care about these things.
The competition have succeeded on annual games dedicated entirely to their figures, and get twice as much shelf space each in most stores compared to amiibo (at least, the stores i've been to have that much disney infinity and skylanders space)

Everything currently points to continued amiibo usage in the future as an amazing business idea for nintendo. Making figures advertised as compatible with many games long-term and then mothballing them would be a bad idea.

Ah, so focus on using your brand to sell extra toys instead of making them an actually viable accessory to games or shout out to your loyal fanbase.

Keep on like always, Nintendo.

Well WFT has tits...

You guys are a bit loopy if you think that they will lock the digital content behind only certain waves.

When the next Star Fox game comes out, if Wave 1 Star Fox is discontinued, they'll release a new Star Fox Amiibo with a different pose. This is smart. It lets the people who like Star Fox to get now two different versions, it makes them limited and collectable (oh, you have that first wave Star Fox, cool!), and it sells to those who simply weren't into Amiibos when the first Star Fox Amiibo came out.

This is how figure collecting is, guys. You miss the release window, they're gone. Your character will get another release. It might not be the same pose, or the same outfit, or whatever, but it will get another release, so if you like the one that's out now, buy buy buy.

I think Amiibos are ugly, cheap, and pointless, but this is honestly a great strategy from Nintendo. I mean, look over in the FigureGAF thread. We have people who bought them SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY WERE BECOMING RARE. They were trash talking them earlier, and now, boom, sold. Damn, Nintendo, you smart.

thought experiment:

Try to imagine how many people in the US even know that marth exists

Now try to imagine how many of those people would be willing to purchase a marth amiibo

Now imagine that you are a company with limited resources to convert into a commercial product

How many marth amiibos would you need to sell in order to turn a profit after production and marketing costs?

Adjust your production totals accordingly

Nintendo isn't turning down free money, folks, and they aren't doing this to fuck with you. Get real.

I want to be a videogame journalist.
I can publish whatever shit I want without sources or double check the facts... I just need clicks...

seems like the easiest job in the world, honestly.

What are you basing the list ordering on?

Common sense? Nintendo have tiers of popular franchises, it's no secret.

A tier; Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Donkey Kong, Kirby

B tier; Metroid, Star Fox, Animal Crossing, Wario

C tier; Pikmin, FZero, Fire Emblem

Who? tier; Wii Fit, Kid Icarus, Punch Out, Duck Hunt, Rob, Mr Game and Watch, Xenoblade, Earthbound

Some characters, such as Shiek, may be from a popular franchise, but most people won't know who they are.

You guys need to choose 3 random characters or room for wave 2. you cant have your cake and eat it too. If those three characters are limited supply why would they restock it when they have 30+ characters to release. I expect the rest of wave 1 to slowly be phased out as well except for the obvious ones the article mentions. I swear some of you claim nintendo makes no sense but you don't try to make any sense of your own.

Seriously. People are acting like they're stopping production of pikachu amiibo. Fire emblem isn't exactly a popular franchise, with it almost being cancelled if not for awakenings strong sales. And even as a smash staple not many people know Marth. Wii fit trainer and villager are from two very popular franchises, but they aren't particularly iconic so them going out makes sense too. Yea it sucks for fans that these were limited run, but these characters are pretty much selling out because they are limited, not because there's a huge demand. But stop acting like Nintendo is leaving millions on the table.

WTF is wrong with Nintendo. Why do they deliberately stop the supply of shit that sells well?
Again, Marth and WFT seemed to be undesirable going into the launch of amiibo. They are ugly and not really fan favorites (I'm guessing Nintendo looked at pre orders). It's not until after they became rare that they became desirable

Marth Abmiibo: $75.00

Lol - good luck with that, Nintendo.

You fucking suck as bad as the rest, now... might as well start charging to play online.

They been up for preorder for months, like has been said, Nintendo wasnt gonna over stock the market and then they end up bombing and people dont buy them.

Now that they are selling out of course they will restock at some point, someone like Villager will def work with a new AC game so he will be back.

Unless Iwata or Reggie came out and said there will never be anymore of those no reason to panic, email statements from Nintendo means nothing 90% of the time.

Yeah, that's more blatant than when I describe the best game ever and ask, "Well guys, how would it be?"

Sometimes it can happen by legit accident, though. The other day when I was talking about Pushmo World in the Capt. Toad thread I didn't see it coming.

Actually, the WFT amiibo is pretty legit. Very nicely sculpted.

Ha, true. :-)

I don't blame them. With three series now using these figures, shelf space is limited and with three waves to go through they don't want to be stuck with inventory. Nintendo is not in the business of holding on to stock like that.

While I do think a couple of Amiibos are actually nice looking, yeah, this is the strategy. Was kinda obvious, thinking about it. Now Smash, later Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Pokemon etc etc...
Its okay, but goddamn it communicate your future plans better.

Now that they are selling out of course they will restock at some point, someone like Villager will def work with a new AC game so he will be back.
Villager uses the old design. If they need an Amiibo out for the next Animal Crossing they'll likely release a new one that is closer to the current taller design of villagers, or maybe even an animal character like Isabelle.

What's with this back and forth? In the matter of days, restocks of some amiibos have been rumored, confirmed, deconfirmed, then confirmed again.

Here's the thing: yes, they were available for pre-order for months, but I don't make a lot of money. I couldn't pre-order them.

I understand that Nintendo shouldn't be expected to manufacture Marth and Wii Fit Trainer for years but how about a few MONTHS? Like, is it so crazy to have the option to purchase these figures a couple months after launch?

It's honestly not a huge deal for me. I'm more annoyed than angry. Nintendo has made the decision on whether or not to collect Amiibo very simple for me - I'm not investing my time and money into any of them. Life goes on. They, along with Sony and MS, have plenty of games coming next year that I'll put my money towards instead.

Really would like to own all of them.... But they are expensive, i dont have any use for them, and iam broke as fuck.

All future amiibos are on order, just to be safe!

If this is their marketing plan...it is working! Was really expecting them to be treated like Disney Infinity - buy 2 get 1 free sorts of deals. But amiibos have only had small savings deals over here. Thus is Nintendo life - better buy day one, or day one of the deal. After that, good luck! Similar thing for their games here.

Man, that's so disappointing to hear. This was the kind of thing I would eventually go about collecting all of, but figured I'd have at least a year before certain ones started getting scarce. It's not even been a month.

Really stupid and probably very short sighted on Nintendo's part. They could do so much more with these if they wanted.

There's no point in collecting them now. I'm too old and don't give enough of a shit to start hunting things down for a high price any more. I bought Wii Fit Trainer on Saturday when I heard she was going to be scarce, but man. I feel like I need to grab a few more now.

a year ago, if you told gaf "nintendo will release a wii fit trainer toy and demand will drastically outstrip supply," many people would have said that it was impossible, and no one would want her. It's a fighting game character taken from a casual exercise game. They probably expected the figures to go to compulsive collectors and little kids. If we had to pick one figure to be really unpopular with the little kids, it's this one.

Therefore, I find it really hard to blame them for expecting her to be unpopular, at least. I feel somewhat the same about Villager.

Now, Marth, he's a character like fox and captain falcon: currently known more as a smash staple than for his actual games. I'm a little surprised he wasn't more common. I guess they expected the popular ones to be defined entirely by what little kids would buy rather than any element of long-time smash players.

Just shows how off they were in initial shipments. We are seeing this much of a demand where people are selling such niche items for nearly 5x the retail value shortly after release.

It happens but I didn't expect it to occur during the holidays...

I hope this doesn't become a regular occurrence where Amiibo fans have to keep competing with scalpers during future wave releases. It certainly makes the "my poor wallet" phrase even more true for the collectors.
