Say goodbye to your little amiibo friends........

Tell the journalists to get their shit straight

How is it the journalists fault when some people at Nintendo are saying they're out of print while someone else at Nintendo is saying they aren't?

So if certain characters that are in games are locked into buying an amiibo then this is literal limited quantity DLC, which just doesn't sit right with me.

Common sense says that Ninteod won't keep producing all Amiibos indefinitely. Clearly, the ones with lower demand will be the first to go. In spite of whatever demand exists on GAF and among collectors, Marth and WFT probably have very low demand and therefore can't keep taking up shelf space.
It's not even just space, but factory costs of production too.

This is what happens when your cast of characters isn't insanely popular (Disney) and when your toys aren't made for a specific game (Skylanders), I guess. But as long as the important characters remain, I guess that's fine.

For the less popular characters they cant just be making endless shipments for them. They're making a bunch of these. They have to make 51 amiibo just for smash bros then move on to the next game.

Yes but this is the other extreme.

People who get into Smash Bros 3DS/Wii U later may have to pay ridiculous prices just to use their favorite Amiibo. Captain Falcon and Little Mac are popular characters and also seem likely to have a limited run.

After the November 21 launch of Amiibo, Nintendo’s line of Skylanders-style interactive figurines that connect to Wii U games including Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8, would-be buyers started to notice that supply of some of the figurines dried up fast at retail outlets and online, and didn’t seem to reappear.

Today, Nintendo confirmed to WIRED that this was deliberate, and the company does not plan to ship any more of several of the Amiibo figurines after the “initial shipment.”

“We will aim for certain amiibo to always be available. These will be for our most popular characters like Mario and Link. Due to shelf space constraints, other figures likely will not return to the market once they have sold through their initial shipment,” read the full statement.

Fucking sucks if true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm going nuts with all of this back and forth shit, what's really going on ?!?!?!?!?

I honestly don't understand Nintendo's reasoning here. These little plastic widgets are selling quite well; why limit the supply? Don't they want to make more money?

I was hoping there would be a gif in the OP of Tony Montana with that gun, and text saying "say goodbye to your little Amiibo friends..." And maybe some footage of some Amiibos getting blasted to bits, spliced onto the end of the clip. That would have ruled.

Anyways, I'm not too optimistic about being able to score a Marth and a Villager now, but oh well. I guess I'll live. WFT was my first, had that pre-ordered 'cause I knew I wanted it and that it may not be around forever...

Definitely pre-ordering Shulk and any others that I will want from future waves.
I can't expect Nintendo to keep Amiibo of all these rather obscure characters available indefinitely. Or constantly, or whatever word would be the right one to use there.

Couple reasons:

1. Shelf space is a very real thing, and with 6 more of them coming out in the next couple weeks, that's actually quite a bit more real estate on shelves they'll need to figure out (and pay for).

2. There is logic to the idea that constraining supply increases demand. People want what they can't have.

Soo... physical dongle locked game content and you cant buy the dongles anymore which will only encourage hysteria buying in future. I really think this is one of the worst things, and Nintendo are getting away with it somehow.

So this is confirmation of the earlier rumor? I wonder what that says about the future implementation of these discontinued amiibo. For example what if some future Animal Crossing Wii U game uses the Villager amiibo? It wouldn't make sense for Nintendo to not produce more.

I guess this means that Nintendo has no future plans for WFT and others then.

could always reissue or make totally new ones

now people are going to start going ham buying these things even worse then before

Yeah that's true.

I had no desire in owning WFT or Marth but knowing they are rare makes me want to buy them. If they become available somewhere I'll buy them. I would guess I'm not the only one suddenly more interested in Amiibos, it seems to be an effective marketing strategy.

They're not discontinued

Argh, this is getting infuriating. This Nintendo can't get their message straight with everyone saying something different. It reeks of Microsoft not being able to say the same thing about always online.

The PR response is generic enough to fit into the general advisory that "things will be discontinued and some may only get one print run" and not contradict the "nothing in Wave 1 has been discontinued yet" of that post.

Which is why it's doubly frustrating.

Like, the response to Kotaku/Wired is the same and doesn't specifically address or mention this wave or specific amiibo. It's the same narrative we got prior to their release, which said nothing but "it will happen sometimes".

Seeing the David Young tweet, I expect there to be another shipment eventually, but, let's not forget that Nintendo will be manufacturing ALL of the Wave 2 figures, probably starting on the Wave 3 and making more stock of the more popular ones at the same time. I wouldn't expect new stock of the Villager, Marth and Wii Fit Trainer until AFTER xmas at the earliest, same with the rare figures in the UK.

Gamecube Adapters might be a while though, but not much more than a few months away, I'd hope. (I'd think Nintendo isn't stupid enough to turn down easy money, but...)

People need to understand that there are different groups of amiibos. The really popular ones (Mario, Pikachu, Link, DK, etc) will have basically an 'unlimited' supply because they will keep selling. There's no point in restocking characters like Wii Fit Trainer that nobody but a few hardcore collectors want. Why put in another order to manufacture thousands of WFT for only a few people? We have to keep in mind that retail shelf space is very expensive.

If people really want their favorite characters they should preorder the ones they want to avoid any issues down the line.

Those looking to get Smash later would likely still be invested in the characters before they purchase the game. I'm sure they'll still make the Amiibo's, but most likely on limited runs every so often instead of constantly like the more popular characters.

Who's David Young?

who is he?

He's a very senior member of NoA PR.

The problem is that Nintendo just said the contrary to Wired.

No, they didn't. Wired has a generic article piece of PR about the fact that amiibos of the lesser known faces will be discontinued eventually, and maybe not get a second shipment after the first. That doesn't say they will never get another shipment. And the recent NoA response is that more shipments are on their way.

The whole "single shipment" idea is total bullocks as multiple retailers have already received more than a single shipment. They obviously didn't expect the demand, and the can't produce them and the new wave so fast concurrently so subsequent shipments are slow and sparse.

You have to admit that there is a bit of an underestimation. I'll give you WFT, but Marth at this point is an important part of the Smash roster and unlike other Nintendo IP, people have been able to buy a Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing game recently. Also consider that a lot of the "less popular" Amiibos are from IP that don't typically see a lot of easily accessible merchandise. One of the main reasons I wanted a Marth figure is simply because I can buy one. I can understand Nintendo being a little cautious but not following up on demand is foolish. At least make it so that I can purchase one at my convenience for a generous period, instead of pre-ordering out of fear.

Given that retailers are only giving nintendo a single 4ft section of shelf space for Amiibos, vs the average 8ft sections skylanders and disney infinity have to themselves, its pretty clear why they are supply constraining. Retailers likely wouldn't negotiate larger spots given that amiibos haven't proven sales ship vs other interactive toys.

gamestop just got a new shipment of gamecube adapters

This is really gonna hamper my underground Amiibo fight club. It's just gonna be full of a bunch of Marios and Links!

Time to get Kiby and Samus to finish off first wave. Wave two here we come. Are people really surprised at the less popular lesser known characters being phased out for more popular ones? We've been speculating this since Villager, Marth, and WFT became scarce.

I don't understand why nintendo doesn't charge a few dollars more and sell them directly from their warehouses. They'd still sell a lot, and people (including children) wouldn't be screwed out of characters because of scalpers and hoarders.

That seems like a very shady LinkedIn page. I don't trust how it looks, and the info is written poorly.

On the one hand, it makes sense. It's not reasonable to expect Nintendo to keep manufacturing resources and demand that stores everywhere keep shelf space open for multiple stock of niche character amiibos that can only be used in one game, especially since we're supposed to get amiibos for tons of different games eventually.

However, the least they can do is keep stock available for the current wave 1 at least through the holiday season. They haven't even been out a month and there's already extreme scarcity of some of them, that's just nonsense.

They need to better organize these amiibos that are not expected to be in stock forever. At the very least they need to have the limited ones available through a period of time, something like a year. "Available through X month", that kinda thing. Then any stock that doesn't get sold is still around and will be sold through, but people won't be kept in the dark regarding if an amiibo they want will be available and how long for. At least keep all waves available through one holiday season.
