Makes sense to me. He's saying the gameplay is very bare-bones cover-based TPS and that the visuals seem to be the only thing that make this game special.
LOL yeahThe Evil Within's true crime is the camera while aiming.

I wouldn't be surprised if the combat had only come together recently. It's two months before launch and we're only now seeing how a standard encounter plays out and all previous footage was from heavily scripted tutorials. Was Infamous a similar deal? I can't remember right now. But I feel like the launch titles got plenty of exposure before release.
Honestly I think The Order has been a troubled production. Not troubled in a DOOMED sense but in a TLoU sense, where things have come together very slowly, and we haven't seen much of the game because the developers are working so hard on it that they don't have much time to put together demos or trailers. I wouldn't be surprised if we find out that, like TLoU, this is a game that has only really come together in the last few months. These are very ambitious games with a lot of moving parts, so I'm willing to cut them some slack on the bad marketing.
And the upshot is now we have this cool-looking game that we know nothing about and it's only a month or so away from release.
Judging from this short clip: I don't think it's actually possible to make a more bare bones third person shooter than this.
Developers don't need to invent revolutionary new features for every game they make of course, but The Order seems to have hit a new low in minimalism, seemingly having fewer or far shallower mechanics than even other simple cinematic third person shooter franchises like Uncharted, Mass Effect and Resident Evil.
Nothing shown here hasn't been done much much better a hundred times before in other games.
I guess this just goes to show how important impressive visuals still are.
That's good to hear. I was afraid they might get a failing grade.Visuals among all else get a passing grade. Gameplay wise it isn't trying to be ambitious, which is fine, and almost certainly why I won't buy it at asking price.

This is the new posterchild for shallow 'cinematic gaming'. Nothing but walking through barely interactive highly scripted sequences with the occasional room full of chest high walls and the most basic third person shooting I've seen in years thrown in just to remind you that it's supposed to be a video game. Absolutely nothing special outside of the graphics.
what the fuck.
Character models during gameplay doesn't look better in Uncharted, when a cut scene started at the end of the demo with his brother suddenly fidelity looked better, typical ND where in-game does not look as good as the cut-scenes.I dont know... Uncharted 4 has some awesome foliage, also the characters models looks more real. And Uncharted 4 have much bigger environments.
The Order looks stunning, and its atmosphere seems pretty damn immersive. But overall I think U4 still stands out as the best looking game overall.

U4 do have the scale though, it's all very subjective, i think nothing touches The Order's fidelity, but some would be more impressed by U4 because of its bigger scale.
Let's say it this way, if The Order had a scale similar to U4, it would be more impressive to everyone, It's only because of its scale that some people find U4 to be more impressive overall.
Have the devs ever said anything about how the year 1886 plays into the game other than the fact that's it's steampunk? Does 1886 have some sort of historical relevance?
Tomb Raider DE had those, too... For some reason I don't remember too much complaining about it.
Looks and plays way too much like CoD SP (I know it is TPS not FPS but the feeling is the same)
lolLooks and plays way too much like CoD SP (I know it is TPS not FPS but the feeling is the same) for me to care from what I saw.

Game looked a bit clunky until that kitchen shootout at the end. I think I'll check this out if it reviews well (and by "reviews well" I mean here at GAF).
One thing's for sure, the character designs and visuals look AMAZING.
yeah the part where he stood in broad daylight with a sniper was ridiculous, but maybe it's because most people there knew he's from the order and thus one of the good guys?
once you get used to the game the transition from cover to cover will seem very smooth, i liked that part

I think I know what you're trying to say.
Game looks super linear, scripted, and handholdy. It's a cinematic experience in much the same way COD is, even if the actual gameplay, and overall tone is different. There also looks to be way more QTEs, cutscenes, and awful lockpicking mini-games than any COD I've ever played.
When people say The Order is "bare bones" or "nothing special", I really don't see how they don't say the same about nearly every other TPS out there. Hell, this doesn't look all that different to Gears(gameplay wise) and people love that series.
Never had much issues with the aiming. This screen is honestly reaching at it.The Evil Within's true crime is the camera while aiming.

If any RAD people are reading this, whatever you do, do not feel compelled to compromise your vision for this game in order to satiate the detractors. For some people 'cinematic' has become a dirty word in relation to videogames. Obviously the type of experience you are creating is not for them. That will not stop some of them from posting negative comments simply because they are expecting this game to be something other than what it's supposed to be. You have made it clear this game aims to deliver story, setting and atmosphere on a kind of level rarely delivered in videogames. I for one would like you to know you are on the right track. This latest demo has convinced me this will be the type of immersive experience many of us will absolutely love.

LOL how does nobody notice this guy assembling a sniper rifle and pointing it at everybody in the room?
Nobody looks up. Ever.
Lol, you don't even have to look up. Any normally functional human being with a normal peripheral vision would have noticed Galahad, not to mention the people upstairs.

Galahad's moustache emits stealth particles...
From which part of your ass are you pulling this bit about TLOU having development problems?

If judging by how long the player took to pick that lock or use that electrical thingymajig, I would say they just suck. Probably drunk. It looks good, but I can't get a read on whether the movement/cover system is clunky or the person playing just sucks. Gears cover and movement has spoiled me.

Gears is not a particularly great series. It is competent.
