Sold my old car and got a gun as part of the deal. What now?

Wait a second, this is legal? You can just give someone a gun?

See guns being sold at yard sales and flea markets all the time here in VA, nobody says anything about it. No background checks or anything you just give cash in exchange for the gun. It's crazy.

As a Florida gun owner I'll give a rundown of laws.

You need a permit to carry that gun concealed.

You can transport it to and from your house or to a gun range.

When carrying your gun in your car it must not be loaded. Keep the ammo separate

Go here and for more information on gun laws, also has the contact numbers to get a concealed carry permit

Thanks man. I believe the license I was issued is the carry permit. I'll probably go to the range with some friends and try it out to get a feeling for the gun. I also have two different types of ammo, regular ammo and ammo that looks like this:

Any idea what that ammo is for?

It wouldve been a great deal even without the gun. I understand getting a training but why would I need a cabinet?

Learn 2 fire gun. Proper training
Learn how 2 properly care for gun.
Get cabinet/safe to store it for safety concerns. Keep it secret(?) keep it safe...ly tucked away for when there is no emergency.

I think that makes the bullet go slower. For safety reasons.

Assuming the gun is legit and legal, I'd sell the damned thing so fast I'd swear I imagined ever owning it in the first place. Have zero use for a gun, have many uses for the potential $500.

Not sure why everyone here is so upptiy about owning a gun.

Seems like a reasonable trade, and the OP already said he was thinking about getting one anyways. Getting it as part of a deal from an NRA instructor is fairly legit.

Now go train with some GTA V.

Hollow points, they are for self defense. It's less likely to penetrate walls, and mushroom on impact. The mushrooming effect causes the bullet to stop suddenly causing a harder Kenetic hit, ie it will drop someone vs going through them. Ammo without that pit is just regular ball ammo, best for practice but still lethal.

This might be a weird topic. I never owned a gun before. I recently sold my car and the buyer made me a good offer and wanted to give me $500 under asking price and a brand new Glock and ammo. I accepted, now I have a gun. What do I do now? Drive to the woods and shoot? I heard that you can fire guns outside of the city limits. I really have no idea what to do with this thing it also feels a bit strange to have a gun at home

That is not the license, that is the certificate that you completed the mandatory training (that you didn't do). You need to go to the sheriffs office and apply for the actual carry permit (check local laws again, may be slightly different).

Ammo is hollow points as pointed out, it expands on impact to do more damage and stop it from exiting the target.

Wow...
Just everything about this thread:

getting a gun with purchase of a car
getting a license printed out on an A4 as part of the sale
getting hollow point bullets with the gun (designed to nightmarishly maim/overmurder the victim, go ahead OP google hollow point wounds, be sure to have a bucket to vomit in)

Get your shit together 'mericuh, this is stupid

Isn't that a hollow point? AKA cop killers?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollow-point_bullet

It's actually much safer to use hollow points, since they don't overpenetrate. For home defense a shotgun is obviously the preferred tool [which also has this advantage],
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=133047287&postcount=68

but using hollow points instead of full metal jacket/ball ammo is far preferable and indeed is the standard if you're in a home situation instead of a shooting range. Ironically hollow points are far less likely to harm someone wearing body armor since, as noted above, they flatten out.

While Brady and others throw "cop killer" bullets to refer to hollow points (just as they inaccurately pretend all guns are automatics when automatics have been functionally illegal for decades]), cop killer bullets actually refer to basically discontinued, coated bullets.

This is FREEDOM.

Take a good whiff.

I'm going to make a gun mega thread on laws and general information after I finish my NFA stuff on the 30th. Regardless of politics people just need to understand the law and how to be safe with a gun.

From what I understood I can pick up the actual carry permit from the instructor next week. He didnt say anything about a sheriffs office

I don't know about OP, but person to person gun sale/trades require no license or permit in my state. It's just like trading a video game off of Craig's list.

The instructor has to send in your information to florida agriculture department. That site I linked has a list of everything you must turn in for it. DO NOT carry in on your person unless it's in a case. Florida penalties towards gun violations are harsh as fuck.

Alright thanks for the heads up, didnt plan to carry the gun on me anyways but good to know

I've never hated the Second Amendment more than I do right now.

dont get a safe or a cabinet if all you have is a pistol..

Get a case with a dial lock on it, leave it unlocked if you live alone and feel comfortable, if you have a family or do not feel comfortable lock it.

If you truly believe you need it for home defense, keep it loaded in the case, otherwise unload and remember to eject the chamber before returning it to the case.

NEVER point the gun at someone regardless of the loaded condition of the gun.

ALWAYS rest your finger off of the trigger like so:

Remember that your gun isn't a toy, so dont treat it like one. However you can enjoy owning it as range time is a lot of fun

You really should take a safety class though, as you seem pretty oblivious
