Halo 5: Guardians Beta Thread | Hot Red on Blue Action

As a COD fan who wanted to get into halo but didn't like the slow speed/shields this feels great. Players die a lot quicker, aim down sights lets me be more accurate like in COD and the movement feels a lot like Advanced Warfare. Guns feel more like modern weapons instead of the lame Sci Fi stuff that halo used to have as well. Probably going to buy this now!

Edit: Kill Cam is awesome too, part of the reason why I didn't like the past Halo games.

The first time I heard a Spartan say I got snipes I fucking loved it.

It sounded exactly like when I play with my friends. The Spartan Chatter is hands down one of my favorite additions.

Another line of dialogue I forgot to include is 20-something year old talking about some stupid shit the girl he likes or is in a relationship said when the friend group hung out the night prior.

After a few games, I am having a lot of fun and am loving the inclusion of sprint. I feel like it strikes a great balance along with the aim down sights. My main concern before the beta was that it would feel too much like CoD Advanced Warfare, and it is pretty much nothing like it. Can't wait to play more of it!

Audio cues we're missing:

"AFK 4 SMOKE BREAK. PROTECT ME."

"MOM WE'RE OUT OF DEW"

"PASS THE DORITOS"

"BABY CRYING ON MIC"

"MAN HE'S HACKING. HE MUST BE HACKING."

:lol :lol

These things write themselves.

Actually, to combat AFKing, if a Spartan goes idle for too long his bro-banter will go "OH MY GOD, I CAN'T FEEL MY LEGS - I CAN'T MOVE! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-" and continue screaming at the top of his lungs until he gets booted.

Real talk about AFK players though. I ran into a bunch of them playing yesterday and I fully support the idea that after a game is over you and your party are sent back to the "choose your playlist" screen. Basically what MCC does right now. This would weed out a ton of AFK players

I'm continually surprised by how many people are going AFK here. Like, it's a limited 3 week early beta! This could be something historic, and what do you (hypothetical, general, AFK-ing you) do? You turn on matchmaking and then go make a sandwich.

In another state.

Like, what?

I feel the Assault Rifle is fine. All guns should have a fighting chance and be equal. I don't use it much personally. But when I find myself in a 1v1 situation and I have a BR or DMR and my opponent has an AR, I'm not mad if I lose the battle because I know I didn't hit my head shots well. If I shoot right and aim well then its never a problem.

Could just be me, but AR feels over powered. Grenade spam is ridiculous and inconsistent. And the ranking is dumb. I went even and my team lost. I lost 25 skill points. The next game I went 25-5 and gained 8 points back.

I feel like frag grenades need some kind of extra visual indicator. No, not a HUD based grenade detector but frags need to give off more of a 'glow' kind of like they did in CE. I've run into an issue where I just straight up never see frags that kill me and have to watch the kill cam to see what happened.

I love the mechanics in this game, love how it requires skill to play it.

What i hate is how hard it is to play and how much I get owned online.

Feels like everyone is vastly superior to me. Keep getting killed by nade/headshot all the time. Yet I can't seem to kill anyone.

Did they change how shields work? Do head shots matter now before their shields are gone?

Also, the game is OK. I don't know if how excited I am for the full version. They need to increase the TTK for sure.

Nades are weird. I feel they are super powerful and I do think there's nade spam. Then again, I feel like after I throw my initial 2 I never have any.

This game needs a tutorial arena to practice the new skills. Loved the pre-beta though and can't wait to jump in on the beta after the hols

Get killed by someone shooting my grenade happens a lot more frequent now.

Sort of indifferent about this, don't think anyone has that good of a aim.

No the game is awesome the way it is.

no thanks

Nope...we good

I still think if you kicked up the movement speed (which is too slow as is) sprint would be kind of unnecessary. Faster base movement speed, clamber, and thrusters = all of the movement options I think Halo really ever needs.

I still prefer the old school aiming over ADS simply because it removes a bunch of visual fluff that's completely unnecessary. Personally, I alternate between hip fire and zoom a lot more in Halo than I do other shooters so the constant ADS animations really annoy the shit out of me in H5. ADS also really disrupts my use of the DMR.

I felt the same way, changed it to halo 4 controller and lowered my sensitivity to 2 and doing much much better now.

With all due respect I think this is a terrible idea. The base movement is absolutely fine the way it is and sprint is just an option to get you to those choke points and battles pots faster.

Titanfall has a whole tutorial for the new movement options. 343 need to do this.

Be inspired by the right games, 343.

You know what else would get you to those choke points and battle spots faster? Faster base movement speed. That and you wouldn't be compromising your ability to shoot while moving to those spots quickly either. Playing CE again in MCC has reminded me how much more I like Halo when you can run and gun fast.

Base movement speed in H5 feels crazy sluggish to me. I don't like it at all.

Yeah, I'm with Seph on this one. It's more subtle than Halo 4's implementation, but there's some "innovative retro-bandaiding" going on with the game design right now. With Halo 4 it was more critically toxic to the gameplay, where you'd have elements like "all players do not have Red Xs unless using the proper [Nemesis] perk" or "you're plainly obvious in Promethean Vision unless you use Wetwork," and so on and so forth. Halo 5's basically doing it with the Spartan Abilities, where map movement feels very "you've got one of the slowest movement speeds in a Halo title to date unless you're making use of Sprint or associated Spartan Abilities." It should really be something to the effect of "you've got a very high movement speed, and this can be further improved, not substituted, by Spartan Abilities."

I feel like whatever movement speed you have while wielding the Bane is nearly perfect. Just up everyone's speed to that and scrap Sprint.

I agree about upping the base movement speed, but as-is you'd have to alter the maps fairly drastically, or else sacrifice some of the more interesting routes unless you upped it all the way to sprint speed.

Definitely feels too sluggish atm, though. Give it a bump to 110, maybe 120, and improve strafe acceleration, and I think we're good. Ditto on reducing (or eliminating) the ADS frames. I don't mind the visuals, since it places a restriction on the DMR's midrange effectiveness due to the tunnel vision.

I do not understand the point of killcam in an arena shooter, especially one like Halo. They are partly useless even in COD, partly cause you die quickly and sometimes there's some dude hiding and picking people off for ages.

In fact I do not understand the point of Killcam, what do you think the guy who sniped me off from the other side of map will still be there exactly like that when I respawn in a game like this ? As for close kills I can see where they are anyway.

Why not just have the camera go to third person when dying and focus on the killer and then let the player choose if they want to spawn or just want to circle around the map to observe for a bit before spawning. Why do I have to watch the last three bullets that killed me? What purpose does it serve? Unfortunately the designers at 343 will never think about this.

this points out what a tough job 343i has with balancing the fans/communities expectations and wants. even the people that agree with him on both ADS and sprint likely disagree about other aspects. it would be near impossible to find someone with an exact preference let alone a shipped game that everyone is pleased with. i hope people think about these challenges next time they want to attack 343i for the choices they've made and "ruining halo". virtually none of us will be 100% satisfied with the game we receive but i certainly hope any halo fan can find enough to like with halo 5 to have fun - if not, thats kind of sad because even in this early glimpse the game is fantastic.
