Halo 5: Guardians Beta Thread | Hot Red on Blue Action

I'll +1 that. :P

10 hours into the Beta on just two maps and one gametype. And we have yet to see like 75% of whats in it.

I cant imagine the withdrawl for the next 10 months. :(

Edit I wonder if they will/can patch some things into the beta. Reading above, controller vibration should definitely be optional.

The withdrawal will be real and painful. I can't imagine 10 months without this.

Being able to actually join a match is a big plus I guess coming from the master chief collection pre-alpha. Major downside is the game plays like a flaming hot piece of trash.

Please let this fix the major fucking lag issues we have here in Australia, it's the only thing ruining an awesome beta right now!!

This so much this. I've given up playing for now. I'll go again when they fix their servers or actually get Aussie ones or when the new game types come out.

Okay so I've spent over an hour with the beta now and I have to say I am really, really enjoying it. Everyone predicting the end of the world because of ADS but in practice it's totally fine.

I love the thrusters and how they change the dynamic of the game. I also enjoy the climbing when jumping and the sprinting.

I actually love all the changes and after jumping back into MCCC it's jarring how much better H5 feels.

Ever since the patch I've noticed more latency issues and bullshit kill cams. Had a guy use his DMR to kill me in 3 shots and I wasn't even in his line of sight.

From his line of sight? the kill cams seem to go by your connection and where people are located from your xbox so when you see him missing you is because your game is behind, it's not pulling positions from the killers side sadly.

So in other words kill cams lie, a lot.

I'm getting better ping but there's no way these are dedicated Aus servers. Match find time are still generally sub 20 seconds for me

I do wonder why they went with an automatic server approach, why spend months coding in auto checks when you can just make a service selection and be done with it.

It's like giving a choice for anything is bad in this generation.

They cannot give us a server choice because of the way the ranking system work. Think about it.

As an admittedly solo player it feels like the close games are very rare.

I'm either on a team that works together and stomps or on the receiving end.

This is the most un-Halo part about this whole Beta for me, especially since this is a ranked playlist.

then why not have ranking per region? us/eu/asia/rest or something akin to that?

Server connections should come first, then ranking, if things stay like they are it's going to always be a roll of the dice.

Maybe the player pool would be too small for the beta to work

My first two games after the patch were smooth as butter, shots registering and absolutely zero (noticeable) lag but after that it was the normal shit connection resumed.

It felt so freaking good in those two games though, going 16-11-4 and 13-10-2 and we won 7 matches in a row and how quickly that changed to BS like 2-15-10 and 5-13-15. Plenty of assists coming in those laggy games but I just couldn't fucking kill people.

I guess us Aussie's have just been shafted again!!

Ranked open region so the net can be cast wide.

Social on the datacenter of our choosing.

Let the people who care about the number and live outside of the US battle the odds.

@ Aussie gamers, keep researching after matches. I hope that you will eventually get AU servers.. Its not just you guys getting dry cornholed, pretty much everyone not in NAgets it.

@343 we know you are reading, so let us choose for fuck sake! Your idea of matchmaking sucks!

Please for the love of God 343, stop putting me with shit fucking teams.

I can't take it anymore, I can't carry teams anymore.

When I'm going 20+ kills with a positive KDA and the rest of my teamates are getting less than 5 kills and a negative KDA, it's just stupid that even though I do well, I lose points on my CSR because I have crappy teamates.

If I was 343i, I'd make it so the top player on the losing team doesn't lose any CSR points.

Really? I'm losing whenever I don't have proper teamwork. When I'm with friends and coordinating we do pretty damn well.

Honestly, this is one of the few shooters that I have played where team work has actually seemed consistent. The power weapon spawns and countdown timers give clear areas of the map to try and control and stick together with your team. Every Halo game before this I have always felt most people played every man for themself. Halo 5 seems to promote team work much better than previous Halo games and most popular shooters out there.

Why is friendly fire off? How noob friendly are they going to make this game?

Also for those wondering about crouch jumping.

Yeah, I'm loving this game because of the map control required.

While I get where you're frustration is coming from, i dont agree. 343i is emphasizing team play above all else, by making it so that the top fragger gets no elo drop they tacitly encourage lone wolf/bait plays. If a team starts losing a player may get in the mentality to keep up their KD instead of playing aggressively to try come back. The only way to always encourage team play is by enforcing win/loss based ELO ratings just like Counter Strike and DOTA.

Is anyone else having trouble even getting into a match post patch? I try to join, the the screen starts to flicker and then I get booted from the game. Very frustrating.

Having played 15 matches or so (and finally getting to play on Midship after a dozen) I gotta say that this is a huge improvement over Halo 4 so far. The return of the old power weapon spawn system alone makes it so much better. No more random shit-show like in Halo 4.

Here's some more random thoughts about it:

-I'm a big fan of the combat chatter. Especially when you're playing alone and nobody is talking it's a great way to encourage a bit more team play. Teammates calling out that there's an enemy with a sniper rifle or that they picked one of themselves is really useful. There's still room for improvement, though. Lines like "thanks for the assist" or "nice shot" or whatever could be cut as they don't help you at all at assessing situations. Also, for the love of everything that is holy please change "snipes" to "sniper" when they call it out.

-The ranking system is great, probably the best one in a Halo yet. It's surprisingly transparent (maybe a bit too much even) and seems to work pretty well. Hopefully they make the upper ranks a bit harder to get though. Semi-pro and pro should be incredibly rare.

-Some of the new movement abilities are pretty nice. Clamber and Thruster Pack are welcome additions and it's clear that the maps are designed around these. Empire has some neat jumps and platforms that really encourage you to use the abilities. Sprint is still not fun to play against and should really just be replaced with a high movement speed (but who am I kidding?). Ground Pound is an ability I haven't really used yet, more often than not it's the best choice to just shoot the person instead.Either way; I hate how you activate it using the crouch button while in the air (on Bumper Jumper). I feel like holding down the melee button would be a better option. That way you can still crouch jump properly and there's less chance of accidentally triggering it. Speaking of accidentally trigger abilities: I do not like Charge. I haven't really used it on purpose yet and the only times I did it was when I was running toward someone and tried to do a normal melee attack. Screwed me over a couple of times already.

-Switching to and pick up weapons and sprinting/clambering/dodging isn't quite as smooth as I'd like it to be. I should be to quickly clamber onto a ledge, switch weapons and grab a DMR straight away. It's a bit clunky at the moment.

-The killcam really needs to go or needs to be toggle-able on an individual player and gametype level. It's been glitchy in Halo 4, Halo 2 Anniversary and now it's the same in Halo 5. If 343 can't figure out a way to do it properly they should consider just cutting it. I know Frankie said it's about the most beta thing about the beta, but c'mon, it's been like this for a long time already. Trying to view the scoreboard while skipping the killcam is also very glitchy.

-I'm guessing this is a beta thing, but I just want it said: the lack of weapon icons for the weapon pick up prompts is a big omission. It's make it way harder to see what weapon you're picking up than it should be. You should be able to see at a glance what you're to grab.

-The maps and especially the floors are too busy and dark. You can see other players fine, but trying to see weapons is too difficult. Even if you do see them it's sometimes nigh impossible to actually make out what weapons are actually on the floor. Making the maps brighter wouldn't hurt.

-ADS isn't quite as bad as most shooters these days and having it on the right stick like in older Halos works pretty well. I do wish it was snappier, though. Especially in fights when you constantly get descoped it's very noticeable how sluggish the zoom-in is. Also, the ADS on the Assault Rifle is really odd.

-I feel like the sniper rifle spawn locations on Empire aren't very good. Both are in positions that are very good for doing sniping so people don't actually move around with them much. It would make more sense to put the snipers inside the bases so people have to move around to get to a spot to get the best use out of them. A single sniper rifle in the bottom middle of the map may even work better. If there's still gonna be two snipers I strongly recommend decreasing the amount of ammo that they spawn with. It should be eight shots at the most.

-The Prophet's Bane is a bit of a weird one. The energy sword was already a very powerful weapon and I don't really see the point of creating an even stronger version of it. Either way it could really do with an ammo reduction, just like every melee or close-quarters power weapons in the history of Halo.

-I'd like to see the Pistol get a slight buff. It feels pretty worthless at the moment.

-The low resolution is very noticeable after playing Destiny and Halo MCC. Everything looks like a blurry mess. Worse even is that the framerate drops fairly frequently on Empire. We're still quite a ways out so hopefully both these issues will be addressed for the final game. Doubt we'll see it get to 1080p at 60fps, though.

The first thing that stood out to me upon getting to the menu was the resolution. The 720p resolution is very, very noticeable, and it looks like a blurry mess. Hopefully that gets sorted for the release. I get that they want 60 fps, and that's admirable. Just turn off some more effects if need be to get it up to 1080p.

343i already said that resolution wasn't final and that the overall visuals weren't final. The Beta was about performance and testing the Arena 4v4 Combat. It would probably be hard to do if there were major performance issues affecting the game, which is why they chose a lower resolution for the Beta.

Are the servers down? There's a big caution sign on the Slayer playlist and it won't let me play and I already downloaded the new patch.

I understand that 720p isn't the desirable res for a lot of people here( and as was said isn't the final res for the game) but "blurry mess"? More than a bit hyperbolic there.

Seriously. I am not in the right rank. Can't get out of Bronze II. But I constantly go 2.0 K/D. And randoms on my team go 0.3 so we lose.
