Transhuman!, I meant to say hi on New Years Eve. Sorry for not doing so. So hi! :D

Maybe next time you guys do a tiny chat, or a skype thingy, I can join in. TBH, I was nervous about how I looked because how much I changed after I had cancer. So prior to this thread, I was really cautious and guarded about showing myself. Anyways, thanks for all the nice things you've said. And I did see your messages on New Years Eve.

I hope you have a great 2015 :)

If that avatar is you after chemo, before you must have had hair as thick as an alpaca.

His parents have a looooot of money.

Did they use it to send him to the good old fashioned school of loverboys?

If anyone can help me, how do I grab photos from my Flickr in a way that allows me to link them here?

what i do is instead of fully uploading, i got to the uploader and add the pictures
once they've been initialized, and before you actually hit the official upload button that adds them to your profile, right click and open in new tab

you can close the page and the pictures will remain active for a while, don't know how long though

or you can use min.us

I had very very thick hair. Also had long hair like yours. lol My pic isn't entirely accurate. The side and back of my hair is really thin. And also, my goatee is much thinner then it looks (especially if you see it up close). I used to have a full goatee all around, now the right side (which looks left in the pic) can't grow out completely.

I think it's probably a combination of things.

I. I had super thick hair growing up.

II. My hair would grow back insanely fast (I could get long hair by 3 months).

III. I actually had multiple treatments (since they kept failing). And the later treatments didn't have hair loss effects. So it's not just my remission time that allowed this hair to come back.

Thaaaat said, thank you for thinking I look normal. For the longest time I didn't feel I looked normal. I thought I would never get back to what I used too look like. SO thank you.

*hugs*

You should have seen me when I first lost my hair. Kitchenmotors will agree. But you end up looking like a scary zombie. At least, you lose all your hair. And you get so gaunt. Gah. I looked so awful. But anyways, I just wanted to say hi. And say I saw your messages on New Years Eve. And I wish you a happy 2015! :D

Edit: I think if people met me in person they would see how thin my hair really is :( I hope people don't think its gross. Also I used to be able to have a beard but all I can grow is a thin goatee. I've tried but my facial hair under my face is now too thin and won't grow back :(

True, at times you just watch from the sidelines because certain individuals might be rude while you're expressing your point of view so I understand why it might deter you to perhaps say something. Although once you want to say something that person just got banned lol. But glad you're on board! So post whatever comes to mind, you have a voice and a say! the good people can't stay shut =]

I think the plus to GAF was seeing far more comprehensive replies to arguments and friendly debates than middle school keymashing. I mean, it's still around here and there, but not nearly as rampant as in many other forums.

I think, anytime you get a large group of diverse people together, you are going to have problems. It's just human nature. You can't, not have bad eggs in a group of people. And even people that aren't bad eggs, it's just about different personalities trying to mash together. It doesn't always work.

If you look at a lot of major communities like Reddit, or anything else, there is always going to be problems. There just is. But, IMO GAF has definitely gotten it right the most. I overall think this forum is consistent in how great it is. It can have flaws and stumble, just like any major community will. But I think the core group of people here are really really good people. And I think the way the forum is ran (and the way people are expected to act)...makes it all come together.

Well this is it :/ The nature of the beast when you gather a bunch of folks together behind computer screens. You'd be foolish to go into any forum expecting things to run without a hitch, right. GAF does handle it well. Sort of a relief when all you wanna do is read game/OT babble and have some occasional banter.

Moderation does the trick ;)

Moderation does the trick ;)

I think it's both moderation and the professional email system. Open registration means people can create as many accounts as they want. Which means they have less reason to follow the rules. For most, if they get banned, that's it. So bans have weight here. Yes some people can get around this and have multiple emails. But most won't.

So I think this creates a sense of expected behavior and enforces it. I do think most here are good people at heart. And they see how wonderful this community is. So I think that plays a part. They know this and don't want to ruin that. They want to contribute and continue it. Well, at least, I know I wouldn't be alive day without GAF. When my own family abandoned me, they were willing to be my family and support me through my cancer. So I know what GAF is capable of and the people that are here.

Hmmm the GAF member that won my PS Vita slim contest still hasn't messaged me. I wonder if he didnt want it. It shows he's been online :/

This is what keeps me coming back. I don't think I've ever joined a forum as cohesive, diverse and full of passion in the gaming and OT like GAF. Most of my news, new thoughts and opinions, including shifting the way I think in rl, is all due in some part to GAF.

The added touch is all the garbage is put out the front door before it can fester in the house. As harsh as that sounds, it's cool to know that all the good isn't always hiding behind all the bad.

So, I figure here is as good a place to ask advice as any, given that I'm still a junior and can't create threads.

Backstory: I currently live in a one-bedroom apartment. I got this apartment with my then-fiance almost three years ago. We broke up at the end of last May. I couldn't afford the place on my own. She wanted the apartment for herself, so she moved back in with her parents and gave me a little under half the rent until she could get a new job that would give her enough money to take over the apartment herself.

So, that time has come, and I am due to move out in a few weeks.

The problem is that I recently got an email from my college over winter break telling me that my financial aid is being cut due to taking too many credits. They will cover up to 80 credits, and I am currently at 72. This is due to mistakes I made when I was younger. I took classes and dropped out several years ago (with that said, the debt I incurred from that time has been fully paid). Without this money, I won't be able to pay for classes, and I sure as hell won't be able to afford living anywhere. I just don't make enough where I work now, with the hours I have now. I have a full and demanding course-load and I work as many hours as I can without my grades suffering for it.

I was going to move back in with my dad (my parents are separated) to save money. But... I can't go into the details, but let's just say that living with him makes me EXTREMELY uncomfortable. I would much rather get some roommates and share an apartment with them and have to pay a little more.

So much of this is hinging on whether or not I can get financial aid from school. I'm going to meet with someone in that department next week and do whatever I can to get that money. I'm really not sure what else I can do.

Do you have a job atm? Do you have friends from college? I would try to strike a deal with my college friends and rent the cheapest place I could find while dividing the rent fee. You won't be saving as much as you could living with your father, but it's better if you really don't want to live with him. Also, what about living with your mom?

Is it possible for you to take out a loan in the meantime? Financial aid and Tap should cover all your class as long you meet the gpa requirements and the classes you choose are from your major.

Another solution getting an apt with reliable roommates it's the cheaper alternative.

Yup, I have a job. 16 hours a week at $9.50 an hour doesn't give me much to work with, though. I've asked around, no one I know needs another roommate right now, but my plan was splitting a place with some strangers. I basically just need a place to eat, shower, and sleep. I'm rarely home.

I would love to live with my mom, but she lives too far away.

EDIT:

Yup, I've been taking out federal loans to cover the cost of the last 1.5 years of college. But in my school's eyes, I should've "already" graduated, thus the cutting off of aid. It's a shame that mistakes I made years ago are still dragging me down. Anyone could look at the classes I'm taking and the grades I'm pulling and see that I'm taking this very, very seriously.

I guess I'll know more about what my options are next week. A private loan is a possibility, I suppose, but I know how bad those can gouge you. And my girlfriend has offered to loan me money as long as I pay her back by November... but that is just not something I want to have in my relationship, you know?

I'd meet with your department head as soon as humanly possible so you know whether you need to spend the next week or two apartment hunting. I take it you don't want to live with your dad because he's an ass?

Let's just say he's a massive creep and leave it at that.

I will also schedule an appointment with my department head; thank you for the advice. This is a school where the majority of students are low-income. I can't imagine I'm the only one this has happened to.

Ugh. That is terrible. So not only are you in a bind, the person that should be helping you is a creep. Fuck. What an asshole. Seriously. Gah. So sorry.

Is there not a way to contact like housing? When I was at Uni, we had a housing department. And they were understanding. And kind. I dunno. Maybe you could talk to them.

EDIT: I see you said you are going to meet with someone next week. Good luck. I'm pulling for you. If you ever need anything, let us know.

Yeah mixing money and personal relationship is a dicey situation so I agree with you there. I feel the following options are worth exploring:

1) a payment plan with the school is one route to explore.
2) I know you said you prefer not living with your pops but it's an option just to save money in the longterm.
3) a cheap apt with some roommates or maybe you can stay at a friends/cousin house?
4) calculate all your expenses and see if you can maybe safe up by cutting off some unnecessary stuff: for ex: eating outside that kinda thing.

Overall good luck positive thoughts!

Thank you for the kind words. I'm sure that someday his actions, if he continues them, will land him in jail. It's an odd comfort. Thankfully, I've met some fantastic men who are great fathers.

And thank you everyone for your advice. I'll fight as hard as I can to keep going to school. It feels like the only way out of the poverty I grew up in.

I always wondered who is the absolute oldest member who posts regularly we have on GAF. I always see so many young faces, but never think I've seen someone much older than 40 in the avatars.

I know we have someone who is like 56 who posts a lot, and some of the more senior members of the game development community pass by occasionally. But I mean someone who posts on GAF regularly... anyone have any clue?

Well, I'm not yet, but every year I get a bit closer!

Phisheep? I know he's older than 55 and younger than 60, he also posts regularly I would say; http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=140381914&postcount=211

oh god, i will be 30 this year ... damn, feeling old & stuck in the vice life-wise (bad job, living at parents, etc. )

And it will be 11 years since I joined GAF

I think you look young. I think you look handsome. You totally live up to the awesome person you are.

I'm 26, and I actually expect more people to be older than me (on here). But I think you look great Amir0x. I really mean that.

Yup, that's who I was thinking of! Phisheep is super smart too, always learn from him.

That's the oldest regular GAF member I can think of. I really am curious if we have anyone who regularly posts in their 70s :P

Man you guys are making me blush. Maybe it's because I've been off the playing field for a while but I'm not used to getting compliments like that haha. Makes me feel really good about myself, which is unbelievably helpful for someone like me who battles to keep his depression and anxiety down every day. I really appreciate the kind words.

I was surprised when I saw your avatar because I would never have guessed you're a man who recently beat Cancer. You look healthy and ready to own the next day. Like I keep saying, you're my hero man. There's another GAFer who also beat cancer (forgot his nickname all of a sudden), and he too was all springing back with a vengeance at life. So inspirational. I hope I have half the courage to face down that sort of adversity when it comes. They say you are really defined as a person in those moments.

I've failed some of my personal tests in the past I know, so I really want to nail it now that I have my drug addiction demon behind me (two years clean now, I made it through New Years Eve again which is always the hardest time for me).

I know how hard the struggle with depression and anxiety can be but there really isn't any reason for insecurity. I agree with Azula, you're a cutie! so hang in there man :)
also congrats on succesfully battling your addiction, hope it'll get even better for you
