What is up with Europe's low age of consent for sex?

I nelieve it was during a skit by David Cross that he said "age of consent is bullshit, they're all doing it anyway. Why does some pimply teenager get to have a go for a few awkward minutes, I'm a man with skills dammit"

But seriously I have no idea.

The US's 18 is generally the anomaly worldwide, not the other way around, bar a few frightening exceptions like Japan and Mexico where it's scarily low.

21 for drinking is crazy too. Are there any other countries where it's so high?

Age of Consent laws are fucking ludicrous in America, because it's basically "You can consent at this age under X, Y, Z" conditions.

If you're going to have an age of consent be 15, for example, then bam, that's the age of consent, period, no strings or conditions.

I'm from the UK. 16 was pretty much the age that we all started having sex when I was at high school. Some a year or so before, some a year or so after. If you were still a virgin by 18, there was deemed to be something very wrong with you. It seem like the sensible age for legal consent, even if kids are fucking before then.

14 seem far too young if it means that adults can bang 14 year olds, but it seem insane to criminalise 14 years olds having sex with each other. That has always happened, and will continue to happen, no matter what the law is. As long as kids have sex educational and easy access to contraception, no harm done.

18 for the age of consent is just puritanical and nuts.
 
Spain reformed the age of consent recently and put it a little bit higher at sixteen as the other countries.
But changing cultural things because of global views I think is stupid we don't have nothing to do with the rest of Europe.
That said I had my first sexual experience with 12 with a 14 year old girl (masturbation each other and something we call here petting) and my first complete relation with 14. Summer and local town festivities is not a rare thing.

There isn't. All of our media comes out of California which is one of the few states that has it set at 18 so there is a misconception in Europe that it's set at 18 in the entire country. Of all the reasons to accuse the US of being puritanical, this one doesn't hold up.

but what about if the other person is 7+ years older? that low means they can still do it no?
 
In Denmark it is 15 which is close to the 16 that apparently is common in the US.

So difference isn't all that big it turns out.
 
Err, seems to be 16 in many European countries, just like it is in most US states, and Canada, and Australia and New Zealand.

We treat our girls and boys with that belief. 15 year olds will have sex and if they have sex with an adult it does not necessarily mean they're taken advantage of, if they are there are other laws to take care of that but declaring it rape just because of age? No, thanks, I'm glad I don"t live in a country where an 18 year old can go to prison for fucking a a 15 year old, that's almost the same age. Hell, some 15 sear olds are actually more mature than some 18 year olds.

The problem is they like to prosecute teens for being teens and sending each other nude pics. if to 15 year old want to send nudes to each other they should not face being put on the sex offenders list or charged with production of child porn.

The law should be there to protect them from actual predators not there peers...

Well of course you need 'conditions'
Otherwise for example two 15 year olds fucking would suddenly be illegal when one of them turns 16.
 
Japan is 13 according the law last time i checked.
