My grandmother married at 14 to a 20 year old man. They had 7 kids.

The laws were probably not updated for current social mores.

As for UK16 -- I've been a 16y/o as most of you have been. You can consent at that age. It's not really any different past the age you are educated, and there is a reason why they don't hold back on sex ed until people are 18.

I know in Florida at least there's a "get out of jailbait free" provision where minors 16 and 17 can have sex with people up to age 24 legally, and then everything's fair game starting at 18.

I think it makes a little more sense than allowing for ludicrous age gaps, honestly. The argument that "sure, an age gap of 7-8 years might seem weird when one person is in high school and the other's an adult but it's totally normal as soon as they're both adults" seems like a really fallible way of trying to justify going after people way under your age range.
