Resident Evil HD Remaster confirmed for PS3/PS4/360/XB1/PC

Like every multiplatform game out there.

Don't know if it's gonna feel right on PC though

There is no better thing for tank controls than arrow keys. 100% precise unlike a stick or the small d-pads. It's the reason I never understood why people have problems with tank controls (I played 1-3 on the PC for the first time).

+ Better graphics/performance
+ Maybe Mods (RE has a modding community)

So a higher res game with 2d FMV backgrounds that can focus 3d graphics just on the characters and enemies, which was designed on the Gamecube, is 30fps with framerate drops on PS4?

What the hell went wrong here?

It's probably the difference between controlling the character with just your thumb vs. controlling your character with a couple fingers. Not everyone's used to it. I personally find a controller with a stick or Dpad more comfortable when playing a game like this.

Yes of course. Everyone should play the game like they want to. Tank/modern controls, d-pad/stick/keyboard. Just saying that on the PC there is the option. I don't know about people playing with a keyboard on the PS4. But you can just plug in the controller with a PC.

Bought it on GMG with the 22% off voucher. It'll be the first time I've ever played it, can't wait!
Cheers! Saved me $4.39. I should always check GMG first.

EDIT: Aaaaand now it's discounted to $14.99 on GMG. But doesn't look like you can use vouchers on that price so I guess I still mostly broke even.

I'll be holding off from playing the game for maybe a week after launch, simply because I know some enterprising PC modder is going to perform a similar process to what we saw with one background image earlier in the thread and upscale the backgrounds to a finer degree than Capcom have.

I would not have high hopes for this kind of mod. Changing most or all backgrounds would be a logistical nightmare for many reasons:
- There's more than 1411 backgrounds.
- Backgrounds take more than 3.5gb on xbox 360 version, and they will most likely take far more than that on PC.
- Backgrounds have different aspect ratio with border in REmaster, which is different than how they look on Gamecube.
- One would have to extract backgrounds, find a way to automatically link backgrounds in REmaster with ones from REmake (unless they use REmaster backgrounds as base, which wouldn't make sense), automatically apply the same effect on each background (and resize them), and then repack everything.

If anyone finds a way to do this, I'll be very amazed. I think there will be plenty of other interesting mods though.

Oh man I thought this was delayed on PC and I already preordered on PS4 despite the fact I really wanted this on PC.

Fuck.

Oh well I'll probably enjoy it just the same.

So where or how would I go about getting the Japanese boxed version for PS3? Does it work on an American PS3?

Purchased my copy from Play-Asia. It took about 3 weeks to arrive (though that was during the holiday season). And yes, the game is region free.

Watching people play this game using the 'new' controls makes me want to punch things.

NO GAMESPOT. BAD GAMESPOT. STOP DOING IT WRONG.

Tank controls take a bit of adjusting to at first, I get that, they always have, but I can play this game with the appearance of an actual human being moving through an environment using them. I don't repeatedly slam into walls and instantaneously spin 180 degrees back and forth in quick succession.

hahaha that gave me a good laugh

I agree about tank controls - it's actually really natural with arrow keys on the keyboard.

tank controls just take some getting used to. the game is designed around it anyway. i see why they included the new options though to make the game more accessible to new comers, but yeah, the animations looks awful with those controls

The analog stick movement was thrown in with little effort to make it look correct and I hate it, it would be a ton nicer to look at if there was some limit in rotation speed, the way you can just run rings around zombies with that movement is lame.

For the record, changing the aspect ratio and applying the same filter to every image would be very easy to do using a Photoshop batch script. Properly replacing and renaming 1411 backgrounds (assuming there is no link) would be a total pain to do but I could imagine it being something someone does over the span of a few weekends while listening to some podcasts or something.

It doesn't sound wholly unlikely.

People can't really be serious when they questioning if a gamecube remaster and a below 7th gen standards game are too much for the PS4 and XB1? Its a bad port job plain and simple.

Yeah, maybe it's easier than I'm thinking it is, but still, I'll be very amazed if someone actually goes through the trouble of doing it. Another problem is that the final file size of the mod (assuming the mod repacked most or all backgrounds) will turn a lot of people off.

It's not a direct port. They've made it run on MT Framework which has much better lighting and shading, which is also naturally more demanding. There's a lot of stuff they've added and changed.

Even then, this HD remaster seems to leave a bit to be desired, when Metro 2033 and The Last of US remastered of full 3D games are 1080p/60fps and this was originally a game 2 generations old, even when updated, has the benefit of using 2D prerendered backgrounds. The DMC Remastered editions are going to make this effort even more wary since those are 1080p/60fps targets also on consoles. I'll still get the game for the PS4 but I'm hoping performance can at least be patched further for at least a constant 30 fps.

Maybe my memory is just bad, but I honestly don't remember ever struggling to learning tank controls nor do I have any problem returning to them after very lengthy periods of not using them. They feel pretty natural and in games like RE with static camera angles I can't see playing any other way.

I didn't say anything about a direct port. Its still a gamecube game, and revelations 2 is not winning any prizes for graphics, even in comparison to revelations 1.

When considering all the other remasters(or games in general) that have been well done and look and play much more impressive, this is not an excuse

Yeah tank controls have always felt really good in these older titles, even as a kid they were very easy to pick up and play.

I'm willing to bet they didn't target 60fps on consoles because certain parts of the game is still 30fps (like the pre-rendered cutscenes). They probably figured PC gamers would be more okay with compromises like that.

I definitely think it's unfair to say they didn't put a lot of effort into this port. Last of Us remastered probably required some fancy technical work but they didn't re-do most of the textures, change engine, clean up animations, and add in a ton of new graphical effects.

correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't they actually do all of that for TLoU? AND got it 60FPS, AND they didn't upscale a bunch of 2D backgrounds? i'm not trying to diminish capcom's efforts, but porting TLoU, a fully 3D game with large environments, update textures, character models, animations, lighting, etc seems like a much larger effort to me

The frame drops are literally only during the angle switches, doesn't look to impede gameplay at all

This is what it looks like to me as well. Wonder how the GC version is for comparison. Also wonder if the slow HDD is to blame and if playing on a SDD improves the framerate.

Edit:

Well you're comparing a $50 remaster to a $20 one. So I don't think it's a fair comparison.

I really doubt it. There's no chance they changed engine. I doubt they re-did any textures, they probably went back to source art and used them at higher resolution than on PS3. And who knows how much work they had to do for 60fps. There was an official video of Uncharted 3 some years back of the game running at 60fps, so the engine definitely already supported it, so the more powerful hardware probably made that fairly easy.

I should emphasize that they changed engine for REmaster, as that's a massive undertaking.
