Not a fan of the hook, although it's pretty clever.

...SHIT.

Interesting that he went for a T.R.O.Y. song title reference with "They.Resurrect.Over.New" after he got so much crap for sampling the Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth song.

It's obviously better than F&L2 and Lasers, but I don't know. There's nothing memorable here to me. Maybe I need to give it more listens.

VERDICT: I think the album is better than his more recent stuff. Not ready to say he's back, but it's a step in the right direction. He snapped on a few of the songs here, good shit, but it's not on the level of FNL or The Cool.

Definitely a return to form though.

I can agree here.
Good stuff.

Wait Lupe is doing an album entirely produced by Soundtrakk? This is what i need.
IIRC he started working on it when Atlantic wouldn't let him release original LASERS, but he decided he didn't want to release it until he was done with the record company. There's a track on F&L2 (Strange Fruition) and the Jonilyah tribute track that stem from it apparently.

He must have been so burned from that lol.

New album sounds awesome, but honestly I always found moments I liked in his worst works (mostly the tracks he's released between albums and some of F&L2, All Black Everything is cool, but Lasers is ehhhh). I need to give it another listen and digest, but on first listen there don't feel like there are any glaring weak spots like Battle Scars of past. I thought the moment Dots & Lines came on like, oh here we go, but then the track ended up being decent. I think the thing I like about this album the most, which is an attribute it shares most with F&L and The Cool, is that it really feels cohesive as one piece of work. Stuff like the seasonal transitions is probably helping there, but it's effective. Still though, the album feels lengthy and as much as people like Mural I'm pretty indifferent to it. I don't think this album is near F&L or the Cool, but I consider those classics. This is a step in the right direction though for sure. Doesn't feel memorable so far though. As much as I dislike F&L2 or Lasers, that stuff I can at least remember all this time later. Let's see if I'm still listening in a week.

So yeah, first impression is good.

I was skeptical but yeah Lupe delivered on this.

Mural is ridiculous.

Dots & Lines my favorite track though.

Jeeeeeeezzzzz. Lupe back. Mural is insane. So much depth in the lyrics. After the surprise that was 2014 Forest Hill Dr. this just made me grin eat to ear. Been waiting since The Cool to hear him drop that classic. Eyes in Kendrick now but I'll be tearing into this for a while.

OK damn Mural is ridiculous.

I was like damn this is the same song? lol

Man, so far this album does feel a lot more like vintage Lupe. Feels good.

Mural makes me so happy inside. That straight raw bar for bar dope hiphop..

beat is hard as fuck and the bars are just so good.

this album overall seems very musically mature. His best album since The Cool, that's for sure.

The Cool still remains king in his collection for me tho.

.

Strange Fruition was the best song on that album imo. the bars are just TOO good...and that BEAT!!!

My favorite album of his will forever be The Cool but this album us nice prefer it over F&L2 for sure but need to give it some time to see how it ranks among his other albums.

So what was the deal with Old School Love and Next to it? Was that just to keep Atlantic happy? Were they released in a mixtape?

Wow, words can't describe how glad I am Lupe is back. After meh Lasers and Food & Liquor II I didn't have high hopes for this, but damn.

Originally the album was going to be more pop oriented with big singles. Those were either promo singles or planned for the album before they scrapped everything and went with this album

And I'm glad they did.

I finally gave the album a listen. In short, I like it. I, like many of you, was a big Lupe stan back in the day. I probably listened to his material hundreds of times when I was in highschool. My tastes, as well as Lupe himself, changed since then. Lupe's lyrical abilities never left: he did rap his ass off even in Lasers no matter how different that album was, but this album is a nice treat after all of his bullshit. I wouldn't rate it among his first two albums yet, but I can safely say that it's interested me more than Lasers and F&L2 at least.

Mural > Rap God.

Murals oh muh gawd. Album is the shit I been waiting for since The Cool. Can't wait to just relax after this busy week and listen front to back (or back to front as someone suggested) with no interruption or distraction.

Mural sets you up but the rest of the tracks blend together in a really bland way. Even individually they still are bland to me. I do also like Magi for the hook, to be honest, but everything else falls short.

Yep. Which has me really excited for his next project “Black Vietnam” when he doesn’t have a major wanting certain songs on the album.

Indeed. Even Lupe said this album isn't for the new listeners. It's for those that loved The Cool/FnL

Not really feeling this to be honest, dude still needs to work on his production/beats and I don't mean in the "Superstar" way... Dots and Lines sounds like some shitty fruit loops beat boxing.

Hire El P or something.

He'd be much better off with Soundtrakk

Prisoner 1 & 2 sounds really familiar. I'm positive I've heard that violin loop in a couple of other places before, most notably somewhere in this anime called Major.

I've listened to this album a few times today and I really like it so far. It's a grower.

Chopper....fuck me...Chopper is amazing.
