I had a lot of fun with the game both coop and on my own. I bough it for my PS3 and later double dipped for the Vita one to play on my own, if that tells you anything.

Is the game's difficulty any measurably more frustrating solo, like it was build for co-op, or does it work fine in both cases?

You bring PC allies with you so it kinda evens out. They won' be as good as people that know the game of course but it's not bad.
