Will 3d platformers ever have a comeback?

I feel like 3D platforming kind of peaked with Mario 64 and got worse and worse as more graphical elements were introduced. Collision detection on so many onscreen items became inconsistent, and there would be invisible walls everywhere limiting interaction in where you could go and what you could do.

A perfect example would be Jak and Daxter. While it's a fine game, it not nearly as satisfying to run around and jump and see where things take you. You're likely to approach a bunch of bushes or jaggy cliff and just brush up against an invisible wall. And Ratchet and Clank isn't so much a platformer as an action game with some platforming elements.

Even the Mario games that followed up Mario 64 feel neutered in comparison, especially the Galaxy games which are otherwise an improvement in every area.

To me, if a platformer character isn't an absolute joy to whip about while running and jumping then the game itself will likely leave me unsatisfied. In addition to Mario 64, I'd say Psychonauts did a good job with character movement and physics. But it could have used more speed and suffered from a gradual rollout of abilities, leaving the beginning rather dull and boring.

It baffles me that Yoshi and Kirby haven't moved beyond 2D yet.

Super Mario 64 DS. Yoshi was the default character, until you unlocked the others (yeah, I know, a Mario game where you have to unlock Mario - weird, but at least he's unlocked really early on). He kind of played like a 3D Yoshi's Island, albeit you could only have one egg at a time, and it was still pretty heavily Super Mario 64. Still, eating enemies, laying eggs, throwing eggs at other enemies, fluttering about in the air, butt-stomping, it was all there.

It was announced a while ago. It's a "reimagining" of the first game based off the movie.

It's supposed to be coming out this year.

What the

I totally missed this

Well, with R&C PS4 I meant an actual sequel. I'm not too interested in reimaginings, remakes or rehashes.

I just don't see them coming back outside a 3D Mario title once in a blue moon from Nintendo. And even they seem to be all about 2D platformers these days (quicker to develop and less budget, I reckon).

I've been meaning to go on a buying spree to get some for the Gamecube that I missed out on, e.g. Ty the Tasmanian Tiger.

That Banjo and Kazoie successor has me intrigued. Hopefully it will also help push for some sort of renaissance. Never played one of those games before (as the character designs put me off and the little gameplay I've seen of it a long time ago looked uninteresting, but also I didn't really value 3D platformers back then much lol) so hopefully that upcoming game turns out good.
