Alright, I apologize for jumping down your throat so quickly. I think you are aware that in every GG thread, you always have so called neutrals who come in and downplay the harassment or try defend GG, and I mistook you as one of them. For that, I'm genuinely sorry.
That said, I still maintain it's ridiculous to use that as some example of toxicity and claim as if it's not helping the situation. Brianna could literally find the cure for cancer and gators would still be calling her a whore.

I'm only vaguely familiar with 4chan, and haven't looked into them much (I think I briefly looked into some alleged Smash Bros. leaks), but my impression of the place was, "Wow, not much moderation here!" So I'm surprised they set limits...

4chan has usually been more about anonymity than free speech. There's always been banned topics, usually just illegal activity, and raids. The admins, I believe, decided that #GG was leading to too many raids and too much doxxing and, in its current form, shouldn't be allowed on the forum. So they made 8chan.
Yep. In fact, when it was first getting started, a lot of supporters liked to deny the existence of child porn on the site. So one journalist went to the site and took screenshots. He wrote an article, blurring the pictures, proving that child porn was on the site and that people were trying to cover it up. In response, a bunch of them called the cops on the reporter for possessing child porn. Since he wrote an article about the child porn on the site, with pictures, he must have looked for the child porn. Which he found on the site. Which they also argue wasn't there. It's confusing.

They actually do have rules there and moot didn't like any GG talk. A general rule of thumb is the blue boards (blue background) is sfw material (well at least no porn but you can still say crude things) and red boards they can post nfsw material but I there is still limits, like no pedophilia and bestiality. Moot just recently stepped down from running 4chan to do other things as another tidbit.

I'm going to stop procrastinating on my Scottish Lit essay now.
I started playing games rather recently (PS1 and Gameboy were my first dedicated gaming systems) so I don't have much perspective, but... I don't think gamers are constantly insulted in the media.
Video games are now fairly mainstream. Grand Theft Auto V sold over 40 million copies; that's more than 10% of the US population. My boss was talking with a co-worker about the Xbone. House of Cards advertised the PS Vita. There are Superbowl trailers for video games and I see tons of game ads at my local theater before a movie.
I'm started listening to a lot of metal music, and that is far less mainstream than video games these days.

In a situatuon like this stupid GG crap where a lot of the critics rely on arguments that are "he said she said" making claims like that without them isn't helping her position. It's great that she provided the source link about the harassment statistics but saying things like the title of the op as a throwaway line and not providing concrete examples is just adding fuel to the fire, IMO

Listen, I understand these threads always get extremely tense around this issue. I just like to think critically about both sides. I just feel in order to maintain some sort of respect and non-hypocrisy you can't just breed the same garbage (albeit it is not on par with the shit pro-GG people are doing) those you are trying to combat. Trying to create toxicity only leads to others jumping on the bandwagon, especially on the steam community forums where not everyone is educated on the whole gamergate issue, and they see that post, think oh wow those guys are right and bam, another person falls into a mold they have no clue and support it out of sheer ignorance.
I like your last sentence, made me laugh because it is true. It just feels like we're fighting an uphill battle, and we don't need more bullshit along the way, it really doesn't help send a good message to those who are neutral, undecided or what have you about this issue. It also gives them more ammunition to use in their quest to further promote their fucked up behaviour.
GTAV sold dozens of millions of copies. A single store chain in Australia not stocking it isn't a drop in the bucket. Hell, if we're talking about Australia, I'd say the legal banning of certain video games is a much more pertinent issue.

Actually, every criticism of video games end up with a call for censorship. Because if you just want a particular thing in videogames to appear, you just MAKE that game that you want so badly. Yoiu want a transgender main lead? Make a game with a transgender main lead.
But if you see something in a game that you don't like, the only response to criticism is to have that game banned or the content removed for the sequel. Hence, censorship.
Legal banning is one thing. But unofficial censorship by self-censor is another. And I consider self-censor to be worse. And the trend is to tell male gamers that they are by default bad people and that they should only play games women approve.

That's depressing. The games industry is already disheartening to try to get into with all of the stories and evidence of mistreated, overworked, and undervalued employees. We don't need, on top of that, groups of people specifically targeted and pushed away, especially a group that could add a unique voice to the industry.

Well before Gamer Gate I learned about the state of the video game industry and gave up trying to work in it. Kudos to the pioneering women who can become successful despite the hostile environment, but I don't do well in environments like that.

Or I express what I want to a developer, which is something that happens on every video game board on the planet. What you seem to be saying is that people can only do this if they want the things you want. There's absolutely nothing wrong with communicating with developers what you like and dislike about their games.
