I don't think everyone was saying this kid deserved to have it happen to him. A lot of people, including myself, believe that it was a valuable lesson for the kid to learn. They're not necessarily condoning the actions of the guy who deleted the kid's stuff either.
The reasonable thing would be this. The 38 year old adult, realizing he's about to do something really shitty to a little kid, instead of the 15+ year old he was expecting, stops what he's doing, acts like an adult and says, "Hey kid, 2 things. Cheating and glitching the game to get ahead is not right, and you could be banned. Also, I'm an almost 40 year old dude and you just gave me access to your console. You're far too trusting. Be more cautious and don't cheat. Next guy might not be so nice."

That's kinda sad. I don't know how bad what he was trying to do was, but if someone screwed up my stuff like that I'd probably just quit playing the game for good. Like when my GTA5 save got corrupt about 75% of the way through. Eff that, I'm not putting all those hours in again, on to something else.

From my understanding what he was convinced of doing isn't actually possible. There is no known exploit that allows you to just go from twenty something to thirty. He was just tricked into believing it.
I think there is a difference between doing something yourself as an accident or having a memory card malfunction than there is being cyber bullied - especially when it's a grown man vs an 11 year old kid. There's more of a mental strain when someone does something hostile towards you than a piece of hardware crapping out on you.

One can justify essentially any crime or wrongdoing as "I was teaching him a lesson so OTHER criminals/assholes won't take advantage of him!" Also, I can only imagine those that are claiming "well he was trying to exploit the game, karma" have never actually played Destiny. For nearly every single Raid or Weekly strike I've played with others in Destiny the group has always used exploits or design flaws when available. I would estimate that the vast majority of the Destiny population has gladly used, and still use, cheesing strategies for as much of the end-game content as they can.

I've done something much more inline with that this kid did right around the same age too. Immediately after it happened, I realized I only had myself to blame. I thought the person who did it was a jerk. Ultimately, it was still my fault.

If he was like 6, I'd agree with you, but 11 is plenty old enough to know better. If this story had been told without specifying which person was 11 and which was 38, I would have guessed that it was the kid who deleted the older guy's characters. That's the kind of shit I did when I was around that age

It's the first thing I thought of. "Who would believe this was real?" Then I read this thread. The whole "glitching from 23 to 31" or whatever doesn't even make any sort of sense if you've ever played destiny.

The kid wasn't out to harm anyone else. Yes, he trying to do something that was against the law (tos), but that doesn't mean he deserved what he got.
That's what you would hope for. Unfortunately now it seems you hear more and more stories of kids committing suicide over "small" things.

Both situations deal with an individual doing something they knew was wrong. Both situations end up with the individual having something bad happen to them. Hence, you got what you deserved.
