Neil Blomkamp's Alien film a direct sequel to Aliens; disregards Alien 3/Resurrection

I can live without Resurrection, but as controversial as Alien 3 is, it provided a perfect ending to the franchise, so I'm not ok about removing it from canon.

"Canon" is so cute. No one cares what is canon with this franchise, it's been bastardized so many times already and expanded upon. Aliens 3 is not erased, it's still the original trilogy for those who want it.

This is just an alternate new path/take

Eventually Alien will end up like Highlander where there's a bunch of shitty sequels that all retcon each other out of existence.

This is a good thing, neither of those sequels really deserve to even be apart of the alien franchise.

Alien 3 well not a bad movie, was so disappointing compared to how great the first two are, and Resurrection killed the franchise for a long time.

I am comfortable with his decision.

yep. They should just give up at this point because nothing is going to sit with Alien and Aliens. The time has passed and now it's all just fanfic.

It's also an issue of what's left is there to do?

Alien was a perfect horror film, and Aliens was a perfect action film. Aliens worked because it upped the ante from Alien, which was easy because there was only one alien. If you try and redo the Alien type film, it will just be a weak retread (see Alien 3), and if you try and up the ante from Aliens further you're only going to make it ridiculous and further demystify the alien.

Or, if you try something new with it, you end up with Alien: Resurrection. And at that point why even bother making an Alien film? People see the movies to either be scared or overwhelmed by them.

And based on the interview with Blomkamp, and the concept art, it sounds like he's trying to do all three, which sounds...yikes.

Yeah. Between Alien 3, 4, Alien vs Predator 1/2, and now Prometheus; the Alien universe canon is already all all over the place.

Like I said in the pretty thread, 3 and 4 can be ignored outright or be treated as hypersleep nightmares. I'm good with either.

Wiping out 3 and 4 is not a disgrace. Killing off well liked characters off screen is the disgrace. I remember being so pissed in the theater watching 3. Not to mention the jumping through nonsense logic hoops of an egg being on the ship to begin with.

Day one!

Aliens>Alien for me. I can get bored re-watching Alien but never for the sequel.

They're both great in their own ways. You have some people that are pretty elitist about the original and I love it too, but Aliens, while it had more action and whatnot, still to me very much had a horror vibe to it so it didn't feel like some stupid out of place sequel.

I just am really wary of another Ripley retread. if we're entering this universe again, it's time for some fresh stories.

I understand your concern but IMO, Ripley as portrayed by Sigourney Weaver is the most redeemable thing in the series. Without her, the series wouldn't be popular to begin with.

what I am concerned about is whether this is more like "real outer space" stuff like in Alien or will get mostly guns and CGI, that would suck ass.

I cannot stand the elitism around the Alien/Aliens debate. Especially film students, who in my experience scoff at Aliens like it's some Transformers level action movie.

You're right though, Aliens was still terrifying to watch at times. But for me what has me coming back to it is the dude-bro dynamic between all the soldiers and Ripley. Cannot beat that. Oh and "game over man, game over".

Man, but what about a movie about the Space Jockey Homeworld and the origin of the Xeno. I want my movie of Giger landscapes and horrors followed by everybody dying in horrible ways, the end.

Meh, we'll see if it's good it will definitely have a decent budget for special effects work since it is Neil Blomkamp.

Honestly while Aliens is definitely more action driven, I find that the atmosphere and tension is still really strong. You have some gunfire and explosions, but then there's plenty of scenes like Ripley and Newt lying together with the facehugger lurking in the room, Newt in the pool of water with the xenomorph, the exploration of the deserted colony, and so on. It's not like some big dumb action affair. Story wise it was good and made sense and still brought some horror and tension.

All those people who bought the Alien Quadrilogy are feeling stupid now.
Bruh, I got the BD Anthology on sale and it was a steal even for the first two films.

Maybe one that doesn't suck then?
I kind of prefer it being left mysterious, honestly. The space jockey seems so much less interesting through the lens of Prometheus.

Anyway, I have zero hopes for this so either I'll be unfazed if it's bad or I'll be pleasantly surprised if it's good. So...we'll see.

Hype rising. This could be incredible.

Had no idea Weaver had such a strong influence over the development of Alien 3 and Resurrection.

fine with me

when the canon becomes unworkable but you don't want to reboot, roll it back as far as you need to make the film you wanna make

Fuck YES!!!

I always wanted 3 and Resurrection to be retconned into nightmares Ripley was having during stasis. I just hope this turns out better than most revivals.
