Neil Blomkamp's Alien film a direct sequel to Aliens; disregards Alien 3/Resurrection

Ridley Scott and Neill Blomkamp know each other. Neill worked at/for Ridley's commercial company. RSAfilms.com I wouldn't be surprised if the two of them are sharing story notes between their two films.

Will ya'll stop being excited for this if Chappie comes out and is mediocre?

I didn't care much for District 9 despite everyone shitting their pants over it when it came out, but I still thought it was very well made and interesting. Haven't seen Elysium. I don't see how this applies to his Alien. I'm not simple minded enough to say "well because x was bad, y will be bad too" seeing as they're two completely different projects.

It would be fucking hilarious if Ripley woke up from hypersleep at the beginning of the movie telling Hicks of the nightmares she had while sleeping. One about her time in an ore refinery, and then another about the time she was a Ripley clone/Alien hybrid.

Cinema would erupt.

Can they disregard Aliens as well?

So, if they're disregarding Alien 3, does this mean that Newt is all grown up?

Does this mean the pre-Alien 3 comics are canon, too?

Are the other 2 really that bad? I might watch them if I like the first 2 enough.

The first two movie were made by (Alien)Ridley Scott and (Aliens)James Cameron at the top of their game, so it was going to a a tough follow up regardless. Weaver even got a Oscar nomination for best actress for Aliens; a horror-action genre which she plays one badass heroine back in 1987! That's wild. Alien 3 did piss Cameron off for what they did to his characters which we fans all felt too.

Watch them but adjust expectations. When I think about what I'd have hoped for in 3 and what it actually was it's jarring. 4 is its own beast, like... Terminator 3 sort of. Self aware and firmly planted in its own era, in a bad way.

This is amazing. I didn't hate 3 but Resurrection is just awful. I certainly hope they don't fuck this up because what a damn opportunity.

Holy shit. I did not know this. That's unbelievable. In fact if I weren't familiar with you around these parts, I would have immediately thought that you were full of shit.

You just know that this will probably play out just like Aliens with a bunch of Aliens references and none of the subtext.

I don't know, I mean, I haven't seen it.

If David Fincher couldn't make this franchise work then I don't see what hope Blomkamp has.

This is ignoring a lot of context. It was Fincher's first movie; we're not talking about the same Fincher or the same Fincher in the position that made SE7EN or Gone Girl.

3 is not a bad movie. People are bitter because of... well, watch the movie.
4 is awful though. Not single redeeming quality.

I'll laugh when his movie end up being worse than 4.
Bringing Ripley back is just stupid.

The only thing I'm concerned about is how well he can shoot and light when divorced from a documentary style. Because that style does not befit or do justice to Alien.

I know that 3 is not a bad movie per se, but it will never sit well with me. Eliminating two of the main characters off-screen was too much, though I know of its development difficulties.

And 4 actually has a lot of fun moments and great lines, however as a film and a story it is a complete mess.

Whether or not I am down with this tactic depends on where the film attempts to take Aliens.

The only thing this could be better is if Neil announced he got James Cameron as a co writer and Ridley Scott as director. Then, all would be well in the world.

By the way, if you guys haven't already, I highly recommend checking out Alien: Isolation. It's easily the best thing to come from the Alien franchise in a long time.

Definitely, got into the franchise just to prepare for the game. Do it, guys!

They will probably explain alien 3/resurrection as a dream of sorts rather than totally retconning it.

Wow that actually fits with the script in the second movie.

NEWT: Are we going to sleep now?

RIPLEY: That's right.

NEWT: Can we dream?

RIPLEY: Yes, honey. I think we both can.

In another universe somewhere, Fox studio head Tim Rothman actually went ahead with the Ridley/Cameron Aliens pitched film project instead freaking Aliens Vs Predator film by Paul W.S. Anderson!

Interesting that Alien3 was Finchers directorial debut. Its widely panned but he pretty much hasn't missed a beat since.

What's wrong with Alien 3 really has nothing to do with the way it looks, I think it's actually a beautifully shot film with an amazing score. Frankly, I don't think the story is even really bad, it's just obviously not what people wanted at that point out of the franchise. I think it was a valid direction to go since the gap between Aliens and Alien 3 was long enough that they probably just didn't want to figure out how to deal with Newt rather than recasting her.
