Leonard Nimoy has died :(

I was watching the Undiscovered Country today and it made me pretty sad to see the last shot of the crew. Sulu isn't pictured but his seat is empty to represent his absence. James Doohan, Deforest Kelly and now Leonard are gone. Gene has been gone since the early 90s, Majel Barrett a few years ago as well.

This is the final cruise of the Starship Enterprise under my command. This ship and her history will shortly become the care of another crew. To them and their posterity will we commit our future. They will continue the voyages we have begun, and journey to all the undiscovered countries, boldly going where no man... where no *one* has gone before.

Never really let celebrity deaths bother me, never knew them and never paid much attention to them when they were alive so it seems a bit pointless to get all "gushy" when they die. However Leonard Nimoy one cannot ignore his passing. It genuinely feels as if the world is a slightly shitter place today than it was.

On another note Will Shatner has tweeted that he won't be able to attend Leonard's funeral. Not posting this to criticise Shatner, it seems he is in a bit of a bind. At the moment he is preparing to attend a Charity Ball for the red cross and the funeral is being held tomorrow so there is no way he can make it in time.

I think Shatner has done the right thing myself. I can easily see Leonard saying "do the damn ball don't worry about it".

Syfy is doing a little tribute to Nimoy tomorrow.

9:00am - The Twilight Zone - "A Quality of Mercy"
9:30am - Star Trek: TNG - "Unification Part 1"
10:30am - Star Trek: TNG - "Unification Part 2"
11:30am - Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

If seems weird Shatner wouldnt attend. But maybe Shatner knew Nimoy was on his death bed and the two talked about it. Who knows? Its not for us to judge him.

Man, I can't imagine how tough this must be on Bill Shatner. I read his Twitter stuff and I just feel sad reading it. At least he's getting the love from people.

I wish all Twitter accounts were as good as the ones the Trek actors have. Nimoy, Shatner, Takei, they're all great.

This hit me hard when I heard about it on the news. I don't think I've felt such emotion from a celebrity death before. RIP

This one is hittin me hard.
Was glad when they snuck him in Into Darkness because I knew it wouldn't be much longer, and I enjoyed watching him in Fringe.

I know it's hitting my mother too. We had a small talk about it and ended it with a Spock high-five in honor of Leonard.

My mom is a full on trekkie. Went to the conventions since I was 8 or 9, until about 17 (35 now). She even made her own uniform (TNG version with collar). Met most of the TOS/TNG cast members. Never really appreciated it at the time and I regret that. Trek wasn't popular among the youth of bumfuck-nowhere.

Nimoy never had to work hard to be relevant, he just had that gift. He was gracious with fans and made you feel like you were important, that you mattered, for even a fraction of a second. A truly talented artist. He didn't need "Spock", but he didn't cast him off either or try to run away from the role. He did his thing and it mattered.

Honestly, most of the cast were like that, genuinely nice people.

Does anyone ever say bad things about the cast members other than Shatner?

On my way to get checked out at the hospital for an nervous breakdown..I get a text that Leonard died, shit calmed me down quick. RIP, sir..you were truly awesome.

Shatner gets a bit too bad of a wrap. He was an asshole to the non-lead members of the cast. Unfairly so. And deserves the criticism for that. But Nimoy and Kelley were very close to him and loved Shatner.

I actually ran into the Shat once while on vacation in in LA about 5 years ago in a grocery store. I was afraid to go up and bug him but couldn't let the opportunity pass me by and he was really nice to me, more than I was expecting.

He actually resented the role. Eventually he learned to accept it. He even wrote a second book with an opposite title. Shatner and Stewart also would have preferred to be known for otjer roles but came to embrace the roles that made them icons.

Good to know he's not an ass to everyone. I remember that story Wil Wheaton tells about the first time he met Shatner where he was a total dick.

He seemed to be a dick to anyone involved in Star Trek he perceived lower than him (which why he was close friends with Nimoy & Kelley since he considered them equal). He always seemed to have some issue/fear of not being seen as one of the top-dogs of the franchise.

I'm aware of that, sure. I think my point was that Nimoy was gifted enough to deal with being typecast as an actor. Some can't ever come to terms with it. He surely struggled with it, but I think a lesser talent would have folded under the weight of a such an iconic role. Spock had such a unique look and that look was ultimately Leonard Nimoy himself. I can't think a worst set of circumstances for an actor. One can't look at Leonard Nimoy and not see Spock. That he remained relevant at all as Leonard Nimoy is a credit to his talent. Great director, writer, voice actor and singer.

Even Shatner was great, but he has a certain personality.(as was mentioned his dealings with fellow cast members was rocky) One that really doesn't mix well with always being known for Captain Kirk. But he was able to deal with it. I thought his acting improved substantially in the movies. Its funny, I always preferred the TOS cast in the movies but the TNG cast on TV.

Trek roles came with baggage, that to this day they are able to still do so much really shows true talent in my opinion.

I think Kelley shunned conventions until he realized how much it meant to the fans.

There's an interview on Youtube where Doohan, Koenig and Kelley are discussing the role of Trek with a cynical Harlan Ellison, who considered the show a failure but he was countered by an optimistic Doohan. Doohan loved to talk about how Trek inspired a better world, and how much it meant to him that people would tell him that they were influenced or were helped in some way by the part he played.

That's not such a bad thing to be typecast into.

Shatner not attending his funeral kinda sucks. Maybe it's legit, though. I could never tell if they were buddies or despised each other. The story seems to change depending on who, and when, you ask.

He seems pretty devastated about not being able to go.

I mean Shatner was Nimoys best man at his wedding too. They never despised one another. Everyone else in the cast dispersed Shatner outside DeForest Kelley and Nimoy. Nimoy always the go between to keep things going for the group.

Yeah I think in this case it is just one of those unfortunate side effect's of being a celebrity. You make a lot of agreements to be places and I suspect Nimoy of all people would understand and prefer Bill be at the charity event.

Shatner was an asshole for a period of time and it coincided with his resentment of star trek. Once he got over that by all accounts he changed and became a pretty decent guy to the fans etc. The several times I have met him he was also very nice and this is outside of conventions and at them.

How he treated Takei and stuff was always shitty but at the same time not that unusual for top billed actors. What would be really nice would be for Bill and George to finally bury the hatchet

Yeah, I have read about Shatners turnaround in attitude with fans as well (which matches my experience). As he grew older he lost a lot of his cockiness and embraced everyone a lot more. He and Takei are still at odds though like you said but Shatner when it comes to the fanbase is one of the guys who does good.

HollywoodLife.com said William Shatner was seen arriving in FL for that charity even crying in the airpot. So yeah, I think it's safe to say where William Shatner wanted to be.

Shatner telling a good story from their days filming the tv series about messing with Nimoy. They only had a 30 minute lunch so Nimoy had a bike to be able to bike out and grab his lunch in time to be back so Shatner would every day before lunch broke move his bike or chain it up and ended up hiding in the rafters at one point:

I suppose. Though it should be noted that Shatner's been pulling this sorta thing for a while now. in Takei's book, he described how Shatner didn't show up for Gene Roddenberry's funeral either.

How is that even comparable? Nimoy and Shatner were pretty damn close (like I said each-others best men at their weddings, etc). Shatner hated Roddenberry with a passion and discussed his dislike of him in his autobiography. Shatner was an ass to a lot of people, but he and Nimoy especially post-TV Series were very close.

Lest we forget Gene Roddenberry was an awful person. He created something fantastic but he was a hateful sexist pig in real life.

Yeah by all accounts Gene was a real shitty person that somehow had a vision for a better world where he certainly wouldn't have fit in.
