This is the final cruise of the Starship Enterprise under my command. This ship and her history will shortly become the care of another crew. To them and their posterity will we commit our future. They will continue the voyages we have begun, and journey to all the undiscovered countries, boldly going where no man... where no *one* has gone before.
Never really let celebrity deaths bother me, never knew them and never paid much attention to them when they were alive so it seems a bit pointless to get all "gushy" when they die. However Leonard Nimoy one cannot ignore his passing. It genuinely feels as if the world is a slightly shitter place today than it was.
On another note Will Shatner has tweeted that he won't be able to attend Leonard's funeral. Not posting this to criticise Shatner, it seems he is in a bit of a bind. At the moment he is preparing to attend a Charity Ball for the red cross and the funeral is being held tomorrow so there is no way he can make it in time.
I think Shatner has done the right thing myself. I can easily see Leonard saying "do the damn ball don't worry about it".
Man, I can't imagine how tough this must be on Bill Shatner. I read his Twitter stuff and I just feel sad reading it. At least he's getting the love from people.
My mom is a full on trekkie. Went to the conventions since I was 8 or 9, until about 17 (35 now). She even made her own uniform (TNG version with collar). Met most of the TOS/TNG cast members. Never really appreciated it at the time and I regret that. Trek wasn't popular among the youth of bumfuck-nowhere.
Nimoy never had to work hard to be relevant, he just had that gift. He was gracious with fans and made you feel like you were important, that you mattered, for even a fraction of a second. A truly talented artist. He didn't need "Spock", but he didn't cast him off either or try to run away from the role. He did his thing and it mattered.
Honestly, most of the cast were like that, genuinely nice people.
Does anyone ever say bad things about the cast members other than Shatner?

Shatner gets a bit too bad of a wrap. He was an asshole to the non-lead members of the cast. Unfairly so. And deserves the criticism for that. But Nimoy and Kelley were very close to him and loved Shatner.
I actually ran into the Shat once while on vacation in in LA about 5 years ago in a grocery store. I was afraid to go up and bug him but couldn't let the opportunity pass me by and he was really nice to me, more than I was expecting.
Still so sad about this. I see lots of people commenting that Nasa should send his remains into deep space. As silly as that sounds, I actually think it would be quite fitting.
He seemed to be a dick to anyone involved in Star Trek he perceived lower than him (which why he was close friends with Nimoy & Kelley since he considered them equal). He always seemed to have some issue/fear of not being seen as one of the top-dogs of the franchise.Good to know he's not an ass to everyone. I remember that story Wil Wheaton tells about the first time he met Shatner where he was a total dick.
He actually resented the role. Eventually he learned to accept it. He even wrote a second book with an opposite title. Shatner and Stewart also would have preferred to be known for otjer roles but came to embrace the roles that made them icons.

He seems pretty devastated about not being able to go.Shatner not attending his funeral kinda sucks. Maybe it's legit, though. I could never tell if they were buddies or despised each other. The story seems to change depending on who, and when, you ask.
Yeah, I have read about Shatners turnaround in attitude with fans as well (which matches my experience). As he grew older he lost a lot of his cockiness and embraced everyone a lot more. He and Takei are still at odds though like you said but Shatner when it comes to the fanbase is one of the guys who does good.Yeah I think in this case it is just one of those unfortunate side effect's of being a celebrity. You make a lot of agreements to be places and I suspect Nimoy of all people would understand and prefer Bill be at the charity event.
Shatner was an asshole for a period of time and it coincided with his resentment of star trek. Once he got over that by all accounts he changed and became a pretty decent guy to the fans etc. The several times I have met him he was also very nice and this is outside of conventions and at them.
How he treated Takei and stuff was always shitty but at the same time not that unusual for top billed actors. What would be really nice would be for Bill and George to finally bury the hatchet

It's pretty nice he did this when the space station was over Boston, Nimoy's hometown.
I think I fell into a Wil Wheaton hole on youtube. That story is pretty great...

HollywoodLife.com said William Shatner was seen arriving in FL for that charity even crying in the airpot. So yeah, I think it's safe to say where William Shatner wanted to be.
I suppose. Though it should be noted that Shatner's been pulling this sorta thing for a while now. in Takei's book, he described how Shatner didn't show up for Gene Roddenberry's funeral either.
Yeah by all accounts Gene was a real shitty person that somehow had a vision for a better world where he certainly wouldn't have fit in.How is that even comparable? Nimoy and Shatner were pretty damn close (like I said each-others best men at their weddings, etc). Shatner hated Roddenberry with a passion and discussed his dislike of him in his autobiography. Shatner was an ass to a lot of people, but he and Nimoy especially post-TV Series were very close.
Lest we forget Gene Roddenberry was an awful person. He created something fantastic but he was a hateful sexist pig in real life.
