Halo: The Master Chief Collection is STILL broken after 100 days

Status
Not open for further replies.
Titanfall proves the dedicated servers Microsoft provide can work as intended so I don't think 343, Microsoft in all but name have much of an excuse going forward with any of their games, in house or not. The buck stops with them, they are ultimately responsible for the quality of the product.

What's your point? My post was in response to the person who said "The HALO 5 beta prooved that 343 "can" do it."

If the Halo 5 beta was built on the same matchmaking foundation as Halo: MCC. It doesn't prove that they are capable of anything. It's on them to prove that they're capable of releasing a stable, polished game.

Until then, I will not be handing out any underserved praise simply because there was "a reason" for why the Halo 5 beta matchmaking was similarly atrocious.

Merely made a statement. If MS fixes matchmaking in MCC with this next patch, we can assume Halo 5 will be good to go as well. But I agree, Halo 5 mm was just as broken as MCC.

First time I've heard someone say this. It was fine for me and my friends. Never had an issue. What was so broken about it?

I didn't encounter any of the issues common in the MCC in the Halo 5 beta. I saw that reported pretty universally in write-ups on it as well.

Of anyone listed this would fall within Phil's responsibilities. He is the final say on MS Studios games and if he felt like the game was too broken he could have delayed it. However most likely the terrible MM problems were not as pronounced in internal testing. If they were seeing the occasional disconnect and somewhat long times they probably decided it was fine to ship. The fact that it completely shit the bed in a retail environment is the result of that decision.

Its really hard for me to believe that this is true. There are so many fundamentally flawed things about this game that the glitches only showing themselves upon release seems like a complete fabrication.

Most devs, even of very stable games, will tell you that huge game breaking bugs in online games only truly manifest in real world environments. This happens all the time in other software and its not just games. MCCs problem is that MS assumed that the project would come together, and the problems came up that they couldn't fix in time, and got worse in release. Outsourcing probably makes this worse, as they probably had to reengage each of these teams to work on bugs and fixes. Huge nightmare. I really want to see the post mortem.

When trying to play with a party we would routinely have to all quit the game and come back in. That and matchmaking took friggen forever.

The servers that Titanfall uses are called Azure, which can spin up dedicated virtual servers based on demand.

I am not sure if MCC uses them. If not, they really should. I have never experienced a laggy server/dropped connection on Titanfall

Is MCC still like that? Or have the patches improved things?

From what I've heard, party play still has serious problems. Drew from GB definitely still had issues as of like...five days ago. Playing alone or two-player split-screen in matchmaking has been good for me for the last few weeks.

Maybe not clearly admitting you sold a broken product so as not to get sued, lose and force a recall.

I understand some things crop up later on but MCC was clearly shoved out the door knowingly undercooked and poorly tested, not just in multiplayer and I presume Microsoft thought they could patch the problems reasonably quickly thinking, oh it just needs a tweak here and there to fix that issue rather than realising, we haven't tested this properly, that might not be the issue or the solution, we should delay this and make sure everything is tip top.

Yes, TMCC and Halo 5 uses the Xbox Compute Servers (Azure). It is just how both games would select servers (TMCC either likes to connect to an out of region server or go with p2p), with Halo 5 on launch getting the ability to select a Data Center like Titanfall. Wish they would add the option to TMCC so we could avoid p2p/out of region games entirely.

Actually can't believe this is still broken

I thought it would be a great time waster over the long ass summer holidays I've had since November but now uni starts tomorrow and I've played no BTB and like 10 team slayer games which were pretty much all ruined by quitters or imbalanced teams

Every few days I try playing a few games of Halo 3, but they're almost always 3v4 and feel really laggy. I guess there aren't enough people playing to get a game of all UK players.

Still love this game for the campaigns, but my dream of a renaissance of classic Halo multiplayer with all my old friends is dead. Everyone on my friends list but me has moved on. Sad.

Tried to play yesterday, couldnt find Halo 3 games so I jumped into Team Slayer and the fuckers voted for Halo 2.

Fuck 343. Fuck Microsoft. Fuck buying an Xbox One for the game. Finally got rid of the MCC disc. In 30 years worth of gaming I've never been this disappointed in a product. Ever. Keep your ODST and Relic map, your apology means shit at this point.

I accidentally turned my Xbox One on, so I figured, eh, what the hell.

Loaded up BTB, took too long to find a match, but yay, koth on Infinity! Wow, even teams! I hadn't played Infinity on MCC yet, so that's exciting. Game hangs at "Connecting to session." Uh oh. Get the host migration message before the load screen even pops up. Fantastic. Game starts, other team is down two guys. Game is laggy. Die once, hangs on waiting for space to clear, Game Over.

I have serious doubts about this patch. The staggering incompetence and apathy displayed by 343 so far inspires little faith. At best matchmaking will be noticeably better. But there are so many issues and so much missing functionality that we will never get our promised "just as you remember" experience.

We'll never gets emblems displayed in Halo 2, because 343 was too lazy to include emblems on a game by game basis. That's okay, I don't need to tell the difference between my friends and randoms. Exactly as it shipped ten years ago!

We'll never get to mix and match armor in Halo 3 and 4, because that would require a tiny bit of effort. We'll never get the missing armor sets either. Why? Because again, effort.

Could they put online co-op on dedicated servers? You know, to make it remotely playable? Sure they could. Will they? No. Effort.

The theater issues? Forge? Saved films? File share? I can't see them putting in the effort.

Dedicated servers? They'll probably just find a way to more efficiently hide the fact that they aren't working.

You think they'll ever fix the sound in Halo 3? Maybe. It's too noticeable to hide forever. I put this one at 50/50.

Lighting and effects issues in Halo 4? They might fix this, since it's their own baby.

We're so beaten at this point we'll be content with the network issues being resolved, but we shouldn't be. We deserve a fix and implementation of all of these. We deserve a fully functioning Master Chief Collection. But we won't get it. Because they don't care. They got people like me to buy an Xbox One. They'll most likely get the network to a barely passable state and, outside of a playlist update or two, just walk away. On to Halo 5.

Compensation, you say? One map for a game that only has six! Six! Anniversary multiplayer was one of their main selling points! Gee, thanks for the effort. Another campaign!? Something that runs on the same engine as a game that was already ported?! Gosh I'll bet that took a lot of effort to drag and drop ODST in there.

Yeah, I just typed a huge rant that no one is going to read or respond to, and at the end of the day, even though everyone here loves them dearly, we shouldn't get worked up too much over video games. But for me, as a consumer, as a long time Xbox customer, the disrespect here is the big problem. We've got 343 mouthpieces with the unmitigated gall to tell us they didn't see this coming until it was released. That the dedicated servers are working most of the time. These are lies. Microsoft has zero respect for me. They lied to me, took my $460, gave me a barely functioning game in return, and then lied to me some more. And I hate to be that guy who throws a fit and says "you just lost a customer," but right now it's hard to see myself making another major Xbox purchase ever again.

Exactly as it shipped ten years ago!

Can't believe I can't get a refund for this.

I have to put my two cents in, I only have been playing Halo 2 Ani and I have had few problems finding games. It can be unbalanced teams from time to time but over all i have been happy with what i CAN play. Its shitty i know but this games feels cobbled together by a collection of teams.

It was cobbled together by several different teams. I imagine that's why the patch process is going so slowly. I don't have any solo matchmaking issues now (I played last night and my average matchmaking time was just over 1 minute, fastest was 38 seconds) but I can't imagine the nightmare it must be tracking down the root of some of the bugs in MCC. It was a multistudio effort.

Doesn't look like you've even played co-op yet.

I personally haven't played any online co-op in MCC, you're right. However I tried to play Halo CEA when it originally came out, and it was just miserable. From what I've read, they didn't address any of those issues. It sounds exactly the same. H2A doesn't sound much better.

I'd love to have some first hand co-op experience. I had Halo friends who were on the fence about getting an Xbox One over the holidays. I told them not to.

I played Halo 3 and 4 in MCC 4 player coop the week the game came out, no problems. 3 of us in Georgia and 1 of us in Colorado. If you do play, choose a host based on the middle between everyone and the most upload bandwidth.

What you shouldn't do, however, is add to the echo chamber of issues when you have personally not experienced some of them yet. Especially since the synchronous nature of their co-op system has functioned like that in Halo since there has been online co-op, doubt dedies would be any better since there are only 4 players max.

Maybe you're right. Maybe dedicated servers wouldn't help. I had no issues playing Halo 3 and Halo 4 back on the 360. But just because I haven't experienced it yet, and just because it worked fine for you, doesn't mean it isn't a real problem that needs to be addressed somehow.

But then again, maybe all of these people are just imagining it.

Yep, those people are experiencing the same stuff that could always happen in Halo co-op, they just don't know it and assume it must be because 343 f'ed it up. That isn't the case. It is unfortunate that newcomers to Halo are experiencing this stuff in MCC though.

It's not that simple. Although they use synchronous networking and have button lag, Halo's 3 and 4 were built with some gameplay design considerations that allowed Bungie to make aiming feel client-side. Their networking also took the form of larger projects and is simply less buggy.

Still, it's true that dedis wouldn't really help with the issues, since the current networking models are much more bottlenecked on latency than anything else. Asynchronous networking models could help, but this would require a substantial engineering effort. Similarly, modifying Halo's 1 and 2 to support the clever tricks used in Halo's 3 and beyond would improve things, but this would also require a substantial engineering effort.

I pretty much agree with all this, you hit the nail on the head my man.

The missing features: Forge, Emblems, Armour sets and mixing and matching of armours (especially in Halo 4), connection and server issues and the bugs in the campaigns, I think 343 should implement all these features and fixes before Halo 5.

But they probably won't, they will just ignore us and our concerns.
If Halo 5 is a success at launch then this MCC debacle will be forgotten and that would piss me off.

Halo 5 could be the first Halo game I don't buy Day One, I don't think 343 have earned enough faith for that.

Can another patch fix MCC? Were it so easy...

343 doesn't even acknowledge most of this shit, even to the extent they acknowledge anything instead of just vaguely thanking us for our patience. No reason to expect any of it to be fixed.

And you didn't even list everything.

Fuck this game.

343i continually spins all criticism by making claims that the "game works for some." Seriously, ad nauseam all we hear from Stinkles, Microsoft (including their phone help/chat help reps), and 343i is "the game works for some."

"The game works for some" is complete and utter bullshit. This plus the fact that all they're apparently working on with their "content updates" (a term they apparently coined) is matchmaking/party stability is an absolute joke.

I keep saying this over and over again. In order for this game to be "fixed" this game needs to be funded like a game currently at the height of it's dev cycle. Vast portions of the game need to be completely re-written, sound needs to be mixed properly, hell, even a cinematic needs to be re-done.

I don't want this game as it currently exists. I want the game that they advertised (apparently falsely). The one that convinced me to purchase this 400 dollar console.

If you check stinkles posts you will notice what you are saying is simple not true.

I would suggest Content Update is a term the legal department came up with for risk/liability mitigation. Corporate mentality and all that.

The CU contains major functional changes, to use their own words. Just call it a Title Update IMO.

I read through that Beyond article earlier. The fact that the "Stuck With It" achievement is also glitched is almost comical. Is there ANYTHING in this game that works?

If you check stinkles posts you will notice what you are saying is simple not true.

Stinkles on 02/19/2015: "People have every right to be annoyed. Part of the problem with the underlying issue is its inconsistency. You're having a good experience. We have players who don't encounter any issues at all (outside of long matchmaking times)..."

Stinkles, the Microsoft chat reps who I had to speak with to get a refund on my digital copy, and 343i all continually claim that there is some magical subset of Halo: MCC users "who don't encounter any issues at all." That is PR spin at its finest, and utter bullshit.

Sound channels being output wrong. Grenade explodes right from you -> you hear it left.

Very annoying with 7.1 headsets.

Weird. Everything sounds fine with my 500X Turtle beaches, which is why I was confused when people mentioned Halo 3 having a sound issues.

Or better yet, just call it a patch. AAA developers/publishers are using words that once had meaning and spinning them to mean something completely different. For instance, Beta, Alpha is likewise completely meaningless these days.

He does say the game is not working for most people, and working for some, the game does work for me but I do know it can work better. Maybe he should have said "Some users doesn't have problems playing, but the game isn't working how it should.".

Weird. Everything sounds fine with my 500X Turtle beaches, which is why I was confused when people mentioned Halo 3 having a sound issues.

It's not happening in every match, which makes it even more weird.

Sniper and Mauler shots are the most confusing ones, because they are pretty loud and it sounds like they are next to you, while they are not even close.
