I just played a bunch of the latest backer beta build, and I have to say, the game is feeling reeealy good to me now. I can't wait for release.

yup, the improvement even within the Backer Beta has been amazing. The first BB could barely run on my machine, now it's far smoother and polished :D

Pillars of Eternity |OT| She wants the 2D
Pillars of Eternity |OT| Aka penises of forever
Pillars of Eternity |OT| I spill my drink!

Yeah, the first build was a complete mess. Literally too buggy to play; I gave up after ten minutes. Delays suck, but they clearly needed the time and they've spent it well. I'm really happy with how things are turning out.

Went through the whole site, twice, picked out the ones I thought looked best/fit the style of PoE's portraits. Granted all will require some degree of cropping and of course resizing, though a few would also need some other minor tweaks, like new backgrounds, to fit the style of PoE's portraits and blend in as much as they can.

They do vary a good deal with how close they match, I tried to pick the ones that had similar styles and the subjects faces were posed in comparable ways to the game's portraits. I think the majority could stand in without sticking out too much, a few would fit in perfectly.

The tumbler has a whole lot more that are really good, but would clash a lot more with the game's companion and NPC portraits, but for those who don't mind that then there are certainly a ton of other really great character portraits there too choose from.

Thanks for digging through all those and collecting ones that fit!

Am I the only one that would much rather trust Obsidian with a spiritual sequel to PST than inXile?

far from it
Wasteland 2 was okay but ... it was just okay. The writing and narrative of the game was nothing noteworthy
and I'd much rather have RTwP combat than turn-based combat for various reasons

What? If anything DAI went back to classic portraits.

Gonna second that OT title though.

Not on the main UI; it just uses little ugly icons. Though you're right, the party selection uses abstract portraits... for some reason

Dragon Age is among the least cohesive franchise I've ever seen.

Tarot cards, how are the "icons" not portraits?

Yeah lack of vision has plagued it.

Right, tarot cards.

I dunno why they bother me so much, but the icons (in the party UI beside the health bars) are abstracted to the point of meaninglessness. They don't represent the character at all, and might as well be numbered. There's no character or personality to any of the icons, which is precisely what the portraits give.

I suppose having high-fidelity, cinematic character models reduces the necessity to have portraits in that style, but I still miss 'em.

Cassandra's portrait is literally a cropped version of her tarot card but I see your point with some of the others and I'll stop derailing.

I'll ask you this though, first Class/Race?

Druid Aumaua, of course!

The real question is, which shapeshifting form? (I am still undecided.)

Hopefully we get stupidly wonderful Sahaugin Druid mods instead of creepy NPC editing mods when the game comes out

"NPC anthro conversion mod v1.4"

"Turns all characters into anthropomorphic animals using the spiritshift models, portraits commissioned on FurAffinity."

So I'm thinking Hearth Orlan Rogue. Dual wield stilettos for lots of attacks and DR bypass bonus and occasional Pistol use for fun sneak attack shots at the start of battle.

With abilities:
Blinding Strike
Reckless Assault
Dirty Fighting
Ripost
Adept Evasion
Deep Wounds or Finishing Blow.

Then talents will be:
Vulnerable Attack
Two Weapon Style
Weapon Proficiency Ruffian
Deflecting Assault
Vicious Fighting
Shadowing Beyond

No idea yet on attribute spread other than having big focus on Might and Dexterity for DMG increase and attack speed increase, with probably a few points in Perception. But I'm not sure which other attributes to nerf. Intellect can probably be dropped a bit since AoE means nothing and I don't rely on and durations, outside Shadowing Beyond. The hit to Will won't be great up against magic users though if I drop Intellect too much. Don't think I can sacrifice much from Resolve or Constitution either since my defenses aren't that hot to begin with and that'll make me even more of a glass canon, or possibly just a paper tiger.

Culture will be Living Lands to get that extra Might to make up for the Orlan's -2 penalty, background either Drifter or Laborer. Surprised there isn't a background that has both Stealth and Mechanics, though I'm sure I'll need a few points in Athletics. So Laborer is probably a solid start.

Damn son, why not create an actual character instead of a minmax killing machine : ^)

Well that is my character. The build was based in part on what I think their personality will be like when it comes to combat.

Clever but honest, rational but sometimes gives into emotions.

That is my idea of hell. I'm struggling to micro manage everyone else in the fight at the moment, let alone ANOTHER set of creatures. :(

My favorite thing to do in Baldur's Gate 1 was summon dozens of monsters and skeletons to fight for me. They capped the summon limit in 2. :(

What is the size of the portraits (in the case I want to make one)?

I've seen conflicting information about the size of the portraits(mainly in regards to the smaller 'UI' portrait). According to the Obsidian forums:

Here is a quick little tutorial for custom portrait guru's!

Each portrait is 210 x 330 pixels. The smaller in game UI portraits are 76 x 96 pixels.

You have to have two separate files for a custom portrait. You can name them anything you want but they must end in either a _ or plain old space then the letters lg (for large pic) or sm (for the small one). The primary file name must also obviously be the same so they match together. So Bob_lg and Bob_sm will work together but if you name them Bob_lg and Bobby_sm you will have issues.

Additionally on format.... yes, PNG files work, and the in game default pics are in fact in PNG format. I have only tried using 72 ppi images so I don't know if that is restricted feel free to experiment but that is really plenty. Also yes, custom portraits already work even in the beta.

File path (at least for Steam) is: steam/steamapps/common/Pillars of Eternity - Public Beta/PillarsofEternity_Data/data/art/gui/portraits/player/(female or male)/

A quick question. I haven't really followed the game/beta since the backer beta first came out, but the run up to release has made me want to start the beta up again...
How is the state of the beta? Pretty much the full game? Will the save game be compatible after release?

No, it's still the same chunk of gameplay that was in the original backer beta, I believe.
